Though the audio quality from this old videotape is lacking, the singing is SUPERB! From our 1st Season of Paramount's hit 80s TV series, "SOLID GOLD", enjoy our host, DIONNE WARWICK and co-host NATALIE COLE singing a duet version of, "YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND”, arranged & produced by myself (Solid Gold's musical director and theme composer, Michael Miller - aka "Mickle"). The performance is from Season 1 - Episode 10 of SOLID GOLD, which aired on Nov. 15, 1980. The background singers standing with the band are Darlene Love & Eunice Washington.
The members of my band onstage for this clip were:
Joe Kloess - keyboards
Stewart Levin - keyboards
Leaky Valentine - guitar
Harold Alexander - percussion
Wade Short - bass
Greg Warner - drums
Background singers:
Dionne Warwick
Darlene Love
Eunice Peterson

Wow, beautiful 😢…this made me a little sad. I had the pleasure of spending thanksgiving (the best home cooked food ever) with the wonderful Natalie Cole in the early 2000’s… she was a Gem…gone way too soon.

Big fan of Ms. Dionne Warwick.Ms.Dionne is just so stylish and smooth in this song, technically phenomenal with that great voice..sounding slightly dominant over Ms. Natalie.Ms.Natalie has those curly and voice blending well with the tune making it more harmonious and flow like water. Love these legends... Missing this kind if music now. Writing from Bangalore, India.

That was a beautiful version of the Carole King classic, popularized by James Taylor as a solo song in the early 1970s!!! Dionne Warwick and Natalie Cole both blended together very well and injected their own style within. Michael, as always, you made such a special arrangement, on this version and "Solid Gold" was close to brand spanking new here!!! At least Dionne is still here to share her talents. It is sad that Natalie is not. However, videos like this help preserve the legacy of both.

This is so, so beautiful. Two incredibly talented people making space for their friendship, neither showing off, just making beautiful music together. One of a kind. I'd love an album of Dionne's Solid Gold duets.

I remember Dionne actually being friends with Natalie's mom, Nat King Cole's widow. And this clip is not just musically one of the absolute highlights of SG - it also shows with Natalie clearly still in recovery from addiction how loyal Warwick is towards her friends. Natalie actually returned the favor in 2004. That year she joined DW in protecting a struggeling Whitney Houston when the 3 diva's toured together here in Germany.

Yes, every time I watch this clip, I see Dionne's eyes letting Natalie know that she means those lyrics. These are not just words they're singing. They mean it, and their talent just happen to help back it up. Such a beautiful duet. RIP Natalie. Thank God for KZbin and its help in keeping your live performances alive.

“Protecting” Whitney from what? Herself? Nonsense. You can’t protect someone from their own urge to self-destruct.

love this . natalie looks good but they did make her appear older than age 30 but she still looks great. unreal what a freak show the music industry is now. it is like a psychopathic clown show where angry freaks demand to be called artists and demand mass publicity.

Bad choice of song. They do too much instead of just singing the song which doesn’t need embellishment. They don’t sound very good here.
