For everyone up in arms as to why dionne didnt know...she did not write or produce the song nor own the master recording. Even if its her voice it is owned by someone else (reason why Taylor re recorded her songs). Doja could not go to Dionne for permission because that is permission dionne cannot give. She went to the songwriters and whoever owned the master and got the permission needed (as the original writers are credited on Paint the Town Red)

Dionne warwick was just the vocalist of that song and is not responsible to clear sample. Doja's team or producers of paint the town red most definitely got the sample cleared other someone would have sued them. Most people don’t realize that most songs are owned by the song writer. The song was written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David. Both of those gentleman have since passed away. So the families, record label, or publishing company may be the actual owners of the song. The entire Dionne Warwick music catalog might be owned by someone else. So anyway who wants to sample the song does not have to go to Ms Warwick for any permission…even if her voice is the one who record the songs. As far as we know…Ms Warwick might not have any rights or own a percentage to “Walk On By.” Thats the way the music companies operate.

Just have to make quarterly payments to the label the artist was on consistently ( or have your team do it). Although, It is obviously polite and good natured to ask the artist permission first.

Walk On By was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 1963. I’d imagine permission would have to be granted from the composer and lyricist and potentially from the label, if they own the masters. In the event of their passing, ownership of their catalogue (if they owned their catalogue) could have been bequeathed in a final will and testament or sold on. It’s rare that artists own their masters. Prince, George Michael, Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift all had issues with their respective record labels as a result. Whoever owns the masters earns a significant monetary dividend for as long as that musical property is in commercial use.

Doja Cat didn't even try to reach out to Dionne Warwick, and that's quite disappointing, especially turning it into a shattered trap track. A collaboration would have been more appreciated; artists like Doja have the privilege of having living legends like Dionne Warwick. She could have at least given a nod to her in the music video or made a reference to Burt Bacharach. The track itself lacks interest and doesn't contribute anything meaningful to music. Regardless, 'Walk On By' remains a timeless piece that continues to be cherished. It's a classic, yet the younger generation associates the sample more with Doja Cat than Dionne or Burt Bacharach. While the 'Paint The Town Red' video is genuinely beautiful, it's unfortunate; I find it quite lazy.

What I find interesting and was curious if they would speak on Dionne's opinion of the song paint the town red? To hear her not say much about it and Kelly is telling the audience they can clap 👏 shows how much they're not being real about that song. Dionne is a religious woman and has a gospel album with her son. You can't tell me this old school woman is okay with her singing devil music over her classic hit. I was expecting her to say something. Especially since she spoke about her son listening to snoop dog lyrics when he was a teenager and didn't approve of the lyrics about women but nobody has anything to say about worshipping the devil? Out of respect and to have some damn class she could have reached out to the woman, introduced herself and said, “Hey, I know you didn’t necessarily write this song, but I still would like your blessing.” That’s just the right thing to do. You would think she would have enough class to at least do that so that this old talented woman knows who her voice is associated with. Doja paid homage to the original but also trashed the song with profanity. I would always ask the person singing or at least tell them so that they don’t just turn on the radio one day and hear their voice mixed in with profanity. That’s what a classy woman/artist would do but unfortunately Ámala is not a classy woman as she has proven time & time again. It’s kind of sad. 🤷🏾‍♀️
