Another example is Della Reese. When she came out she pure mezzo soprano and she became a contralto because of smoking. It can happen honestly 🤷🏾‍♂️

Its quite a mix of some gorgeously sustained notes but throughout the "belting range" section, there are multiple instances where you can hear strain and tension. Many times i damn near worried she wouldn't be able to complete belts (she always pulled through but yh the strain was deffo there)

Because she was out of her prime by the time 83 came. Those clips where she’s tense are when she is out of her prime and the effects of smoking takes their toll on her voice. Like at these time stamps: 3:05, 4:34, 6:04, 6:27
