Dionne really brought that gospel fire to this performance! We are so used to soft, sweet easy listening Dionne that she had to take it home to remind us where she honed and practiced that beautiful gift. They are a family of talented jewels.

I completely agree, They started to overuse those ways of song in the late 90s/early 00s and it has gotten worse over time. I'm not say I don't want them in music. It's just the singers need to know where and when to use them. Some don't even have a good technique to use them and they are ruining their voices.

Her grandfather was an AME pastor and she grew up singing in the church from very young age. She also did Gospel on her national TV show specials, many now on YT.

She knows you can't go back to New Hope Baptist Church and sing like a pop singer. She had to do some serious singing to move those folks there because virtually EVERYONE is a singer there..and a good one too, and it takes a lot of spirit and feeling to move them. And Dionne did not disappoint!

A lot of black artists can scream, yes, that's what the black church expects. However, in the greater world of MUSIC, there are other things that count. Even Mahalia Jackson learned to tone things down. Dionne and many cross-over artists were wise enough to know the difference. Dionne has a style that only she has. And that's what distinguishes a singer from an artist. Having a style.

what I notice here, is her 'extra gear'....and its born out of, gospel being the core of her approach to singing. And its fascinating to see, because this approach cant be faked. If she did, the audience would sense it IMMEDIATELY, and there would be very little applause. But the heart and soul of a REAL singer, will always take over, when they sing something as emotional as gospel. Thats why the Patti LaBelles and Aretha Franklins and Dionne and Gladys, are so special. Because its actually not an easy thing to do, to go from the structure of singing popular music, to the raw emotion of gospel. Singing gospel the way its supposed to be sung, calls for the singer to be spiritually invested. Dont ask me exactly why that is..all I can say is, you have to believe in a Higher Power to REALLY make the audience believe you. And thats what Dionne is doing right here. Doesnt hurt that this is the church she was raised in, either..surrounded by family.
@singingmanmd11 жыл бұрын

No thanks . I’m glad did what she did cause she broke barriers and paved the way for many artists who came after her. She followed her heart and did not allow herself to be pigeonholed and confined to the standards of the late 50s/ early 60s . She was a pioneer and should be held in great respect and high esteem being one of the very first pop/ crossover artists. No one could have interpreted Bacharach/ David’s repertoire the way that Ms Warwick did. She was unique and almost peerless (in the 60s pop scene)
