I'm 85 (todays Jun 14, 2020) and when Mario Lanza became famous back in 1951 all opera purists criticized him - he was the worst of the worst - but people loved him - Many famous tenors today were inspired to sing by the great Lanza . Now the world over acclaims him - Purists couldn't forgive him having been a Hollywood star - but he revived opera in the world Greetings from Lima, Peru

Art is so subjective! And in no others area than the projection of the human voice. Was Picasso greater than vangoth? Was lanza greater than Caruso? Its all a matter of opinion. I love all the great tenors of the last century each voice being unique in its various qualities. ( i dont think any of the present crop could hold a candle to any of them with the exception of the remarkable Jonas Kaufmann) enjoy the nuances the differences in the tenor voice, it would be wonderful if everyone could be a Caruso or a Pavarotti, but may soon become a little monotonous.

Hello to ALL. It is a personal loss to me, having been born in 1951, that I wouldn't discover the great Lanza until many years later. I just started to sing myself in my mid-40s. When I was introduced to well-known Opera singers, Mario certainly stood out to me. He easily became my favorite, because of all the reasons others here have already mentioned. When I attempted singing many types of songs, I remember trying "Be My Love," which of course was my attempt to be just like Mario! He brought a Romantic flair to this, and every song he ever sang. Such a tragedy in his personal life to live until 38 only. In that short time, we can see he created longlasting fans worldwide. He will always be remembered by me, as the most powerful, personable and talented Singer in our modern times. Thank God for Mario Lanza.
