I'm 85 (todays Jun 14, 2020) and when Mario Lanza became famous back in 1951 all opera purists criticized him - he was the worst of the worst - but people loved him - Many famous tenors today were inspired to sing by the great Lanza . Now the world over acclaims him - Purists couldn't forgive him having been a Hollywood star - but he revived opera in the world Greetings from Lima, Peru

Opera never died in Europe. It continued there almost until the end of WWII and was quickly restored at the end of that conflict. I knew men (now dead) who attended the opera in Germany and Italy not long after the end of the war.

Thanks Vince for retrieving this beautiful concert of Mario Lanza. That was a gift from God ! I was then a young boy that Mario Lanza was my Idol. Most of our singers were inspired by him. A certain Vic Saring known as Mario Lanza in our place. He became champion in our Singing contest. Almost exactly the same quality of voice and style. Mario Lanza is the inspiration in the 50's.

Mario Lanza when he sings a song makes me feel every emotion he feels singing it, be it sad , happy etc every emotion I feel with him, that is what a truly great singer should make his listeners of his music feel, you cry when he cries, your happy when he's happy, your sad when he's sad, that is what a truly great singer should make all people feel, the emotions of every word of the song he is singing. I'll always love him & his glorious voice, hopefully one day there will be born another great singer with Mario's magnificent voice, one can only hope & pray that it will come true.

Art is so subjective! And in no others area than the projection of the human voice. Was Picasso greater than vangoth? Was lanza greater than Caruso? Its all a matter of opinion. I love all the great tenors of the last century each voice being unique in its various qualities. ( i dont think any of the present crop could hold a candle to any of them with the exception of the remarkable Jonas Kaufmann) enjoy the nuances the differences in the tenor voice, it would be wonderful if everyone could be a Caruso or a Pavarotti, but may soon become a little monotonous.

The greatest voice bar none. Heaven sent, To this day I am moved to tears. The most moving song I have heard in my 63 yrs is " I 'll walk with God" If that song doesn't move you, you're soulless. His voice was so powerful he could sing without a mic with a full orchestra. Note how low his mic is here. My Dad was a great singer and always said Mario was the goat. My Father saw Pavarotti and was Friends with John Gary, another great.

Hello to ALL. It is a personal loss to me, having been born in 1951, that I wouldn't discover the great Lanza until many years later. I just started to sing myself in my mid-40s. When I was introduced to well-known Opera singers, Mario certainly stood out to me. He easily became my favorite, because of all the reasons others here have already mentioned. When I attempted singing many types of songs, I remember trying "Be My Love," which of course was my attempt to be just like Mario! He brought a Romantic flair to this, and every song he ever sang. Such a tragedy in his personal life to live until 38 only. In that short time, we can see he created longlasting fans worldwide. He will always be remembered by me, as the most powerful, personable and talented Singer in our modern times. Thank God for Mario Lanza.

My Dad idolised this mans Voice and introduced me to him. Absolute delight to listen to him now, he reminds me of my dad. I remember watching Mario’s films with Dad. He had an 8 track stereo in his car and we would listen to Mario for hours. He gave me my love of tenor singers I still have to this day!

The warmth and his wonderful connection with the audience shows the naturalness of his character. Such a phenominal voice and so desperately sad to lose such a talent too soon. Thank you for posting.

My parents bought this record back in the fifties. I didnt like it then. I do now and it brings back so many memories. I also saw "The Student Prince" back then. I watched The Great Caruso on TV last week . Amazing. Had to get it on DVD and its just arrived in the post. Guess what I will be watching again tonight !

He was one of the greatest opera singers of all times. I am an opera fan. That is my favorite music. I truly loved hearing him singing again. Thank you for playing this video. I really enjoyed hearing and seeing him performing again. It is a shame he died so young. He was great. What a wonderful voice he had.

I would have given my right arm to have seen him perform. I've got every movie he made not to mention a huge collection of his records. I saw Pavarotti in concert but Mario has that special something that puts him above all others.
