Big Al's skills as a predator are put to the test when he and two other Allosauruses face a herd of Diplodocus.
Broadcast in 1999, Walking with Dinosaurs set out to create the most accurate portrayal of prehistoric animals ever seen on the screen. Combining fact and informed speculation with cutting-edge computer graphics and animatronics effects, the series took two years to make.

I love how the Allosaurus aren’t the ones who actually kill the Diplodocus, instead they surround it, and let it’s sickness and the heat finish the job. That’s smart as hell!
@nightfuryman1209

But how do they avoid dehydration? That was my biggest problem with this scene, how did they not also succumb to heat exhaustion like the Diplodocus did!? Because the narrator did state “after several hours” meaning the allosaurus just waited there

It even opens its mouth a little during the animation, so the editors didn’t forget to put that sound effect there. Like, the opening of the allosaur’s mouth is barely noticeable at all, and they still decided to put that sound effect in there, just in case some eagle eyed viewer did notice it.

It is so cool that they showed some Allosaurus including Big AL hunting Diplodocus as a team. I did actually know that Allosaurus and maybe also Torvosaurus and Ceratosaurus hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs like Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus in packs and groups. Do you think that Tyrannosaurus, Daspletosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus, Gigantosaurus and Mapusaurus did something similar with Ticeratops, Styracosaurus, Centrosaurus, Ornithomimus, Struthomimus, Edmontosaurus, Corythosaurus, Euopephalus, Anklyosaurus, Pteranodon, Queztalcoatlus, Ciomolestes, Didelphodon, Argentinosaurus and Amargasaurus?

Some kids grew up with Star Wars - I grew up with this. This scene was always one of my favorites, and I still think it's one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. The CGI doesn't look quite as good now as it did to me at 12 years old, but the nostalgia more than makes up for it.

I’d be lying if I said seeing allosaurus weaving in and out of the diplodocus herd didn’t remind me of a space battle in Star Wars. This deserved a theatrical release. This is still so good to watch. I don't care about the effects quality. To, this still looks damn good. There's so much detail in the way they move. It's insane to look at how the fat jiggles and skin moves, while the muscles underneath stretch and flex. It is an outstanding amount of details that brings the dinosaurs to life. The way the camera moves along them, with that heroic Benjamin Bartlett score playing throughout the scene. This is as perfect as it could have been. They outdid themselves through and through.

there needs to be another documentary like WWD, seriously i wish BBC or someone would go back the the Walking With formula for a doc series on dinosaurs, make them up to date with the most solid evidence of course, but just something like this series. Theres a reason this one is known as one of the, if not, the best prehistoric nature doc mini series ever made. All it takes is for a studio to want to put the same effort they did then to create something not only as great, but even greater then the original.

kingofnerds31 I blame the mating season, and slower Allosaurs. They're letting more weak Diplodocus grow up to dislike this. We may need to start culling them again. Anyone else want to go hunting for sauropods?

God, this was my all-time favorite program when I was a kid, it easily surpassed every movie and TV show I'd seen at that point and managed to captivate me in a way that nothing else had really done before. When I was seven I would send letters and drawings to Rebecca Hanna (the paleontologist who was featured so heavily in the behind the scenes) and even got a few back from her in turn.

This is my favorite episode of Walking With Dinosaurs! The story is fascinating and tragic, the cgi and practical effects hold surprisingly well, and possibly Benjamin Bartlett’s best score I’ve heard to date, I’m surprised he’s not that well known! Walking with Dinosaurs has been one of my favorite shows of all time since I was 7, it’s been one that’s got me rewatching occasionally, and my first experience with Dinosaur Documentaries and nature documentaries! And I happily am glad to celebrate its 20th anniversary and hope it gets a special Blu-Ray treatment soon!

This scene always manages to always bring me to tears. It has the best of an animal documentary and the best of an action movie. Bartlett’s score is perfect: it coveys perfectly the danger and horror of a gang of giant predators, effectively monsters, trying to subjugate a magnificent animal to kill and eat it, and at the same time shows sympathy for the struggle of the predators, dwarved by the colossal hervibores, giving praise to their boldness. It touches my heart every time.

I love this scene for the very reason that while the Allosaurs work together, the commentary makes it very clear that they are not a true pack. They only came together out of necessity. It’s an interesting thought as opposed to the idea that Allosaurus was a pack Hunter their entire lives.

Back when this meta existed, it was so satisfying to gang up with other Allosaurus mains and take down the S tier sauropods like Diplodocus. It was always extremely risky as a single mistake could mean death but it was so satisfying. You had to coordinate perfectly or else you were jeopardizing your entire stock. Whenever me and the crew carried out one of these hunts it was the only time you saw these sauropod players scared. By far among my favorite memories from the game of life.
