Not just your opinion… I agree, expensive pens should provide a superlative experience right out of the box, period. It’s Customer Service 101: show your customers that they matter to you, and they’ll e your customers for life. And in the FP world, “life” can be a lot of $$ and a lot of good will! Really quite glamorous, as is the pen 😉. Reminds me of the Pelikan Souverän M815 Metal Striped, but not nearly so understated. The wave motif is also evocative of the Waterman L'Essence du Bleu cap treatment. I like it a lot.

I have an Aero and an Excellence A2. Both are amazing writers. My favorite steel nibs, with Pilot as a close second.

Love my Dilpomat Aero. The Diplomat has such a perfect nib that gold nib lovers insist that you don’t need to spend the extra on a gold Diplomat nib b/c their steel one is that good. I have had 3 super crappy pen experiences….all Monteverde, they have zero QC. Love the look of your new pen 😉

Great review as ever Vanessa. I guess the extra care with the nib is in some way part of German culture, and the approach to running a company. The injunction to make things as well as possible runs across generations. I'd take a tuned Diplomat steel nib over a carelessly finished gold one any time.

Agreed! I’d rather have a nice tuned steel nib over a misaligned, scratchy gold nib too-although, I’d just take the gold nib to a nibmeister and have it fixed if I was in love with the pen!

I went out and splurged on this pen, plus the Aero (the one with the medium cursive italic nib from Gena Salorino--been wanting one of those) all because of this review. You can let Diplomat know you did them a solid 😄. I am justifying the expense by telling myself it's my birthday present to myself!

The other day I was researching a sailor pen and I was thinking, do you have any sailor pens? I tried to see if you did any sailor reviews but didn’t find one.

I have one Sailor pen that I’ve had for a while, bought it prior to beginning my review ‘career.’ It’s the standard 1911 with a zoom nib modified into an architect nib. Great pen actually, the converter doesn’t hold a lot of ink though. Perhaps I’ll take another look at Sailor. Which pen are you eyeballing?

@@pengangsta Welp. Vanness Pens has this pen in a gift set for $187.00 so I ordered it. It was a tough call because Vanness called their gift sets "gift set's" in the pop-up when you arrive at their site, and while I am usually rabidly against the use of a possessive apostrophe in a plural situation, I compromised my principles for this pen. I am both excited and ashamed. Mostly excited. I'm sure you understand.

@@sailcat9 I have to admit that bad grammar and punctuation drives me nuts! Are the ‘sets’ owning the gift? Or is it the other way around? Something must be done dammit! Hahaha!!! I’m so glad you found this pen! I’ve still got mine inked up and I am still loving these mesmerizing waves. If I were in your position, I’d also be both excited and ashamed. Diplomat tunes all their nibs? Then my gold-nib Excellence A+ must have been a fluke. It wrote like crap and required a lot of tuning to make it usable. Maybe their QC for gold nibs isn't up to snuff compared with how they prepare their steel nibs. In any case, I was not happy with that purchase, although I am now.
