I've always wanted to try a Diplomat, I absolutely love their designs -- simple but always different enough to stand apart from the rest of the crowd. The 14k nib sure does look like an added treat!! Thanks for the great review. I'll be crossing my fingers maybe I'll get lucky and win this beauty!!

This is a sophisticated looking pen. The pen I regret not having is my father''s Wahl Eversharp. It had a dubonnet colored barrel and a striated cap. As a child, I remember seeing him write with it. It disappeared sometime after 1960.

The geometry lesson was pretty impressive, brought me back some memories of being dizzy listening to the math teacher. German fountain pens are my favorite pens. I realized that recently Diplomat is going through some good changes to catch up with the big boys and this pen is a prime example of it. Thanks for reviewing this wonderful pen and appreciate the good will.

Thanks David and Points of Distinction for an amazing giveaway! My parents gave me an amazing slimline Sheaffer with an inlaid (steel) nib, sometime in my teens. It developed a crack in the grip section, and I held onto it for years - only to toss it, maybe 12 months before I took up fountain pens as a hobby. If only I'd known it was possible to repair it!

Thanks for this! I actually gave away my very first fountain pen about a week ago! A medium Pilot metropolitan. What's cool is that I got it back when she told me she had bought her own, a lamy Al-star! And that she couldn't take notes in class with anything else but fountain pens. So I felt really good, knowing that I converted someone to fountain pens, like I had been just 4 months ago :)

Thanks, David. Really appreciated the comments about the connection between the Diplomat logo and the Maltese Cross. As far as the giveaway goes, I'm still new enough to building up my pen collection that I have given any up (although I've regretted not getting a couple when the chance came around). Cheers.

Hey, David! Thank you for another phenomenal review. Diplomat has come up a few times in my internet perusings/discussion, and it is really a fascinating line of pens. I've given away a handful of pens, but never any that I regret as I find that I enjoy the pleasure they bring to other people.

I love getting to hear about all the great people you met at the D.C. show! I'm still relatively new to fountain pens, so over the last few years the only pens I no longer own are some of my "starter" pens like safaris or metros I've given to friends that were also interested in trying them out. I do miss them, but I think I'm just overly sentimental, and I'm glad I've been able to share my interest.

As a newcomer to your channel, all I can say is that I look forward to listening to your voice and the excellent review skills you possess. The Diplomat Excellence is a beautiful pen, I'm envious. I don't regret giving away my Sailor 1911 to my best friend, he wanted one and could not afford one.

So far I haven't regretted letting go of any of the pens I've sold. Mostly because I really consider the reasons why I'm letting it go to someone else. Usually it's because they're not getting enough use from me. I'm a creature of habit, and tend to stick with what I like. So if a pen hasn't gotten good use within a selected time frame then it has to go. This system has worked splendidly for me so far.

An old Parker that belonged to my grandfather. Unfortunately I was really young when I received it when he passed and I believe I damaged the nib. We have moved twice since his passing and I have misplaced it somewhere along the way. Still on the lookout whenever I open a box in the attic or garage and would have it fixed in a heartbeat. The sentimental value is worth far more than the pen itself.

Great review I appreciate all your reviews. It's nice seeing reviews from someone who lives in an area I love. A pen I owned once, but alas is no longer with me, was a Parker 45. This was the first pen I owned after moving on from a Sheaffer School pen. I carried it all through college and my first job. I miss it greatly.

Great job, David. I didn't know the logo story. Larry and Hillary are great. Only pen I wish I still had is the first fountain pen I had as a child in the 1950s. I recall it being a lever filler, but don't recall anything else about it. Please discount me from the draw. I have a Diplomat Excellence A Plus with a gold nib. Frankly, I prefer my Excellence A with the steel nib. Thanks!!

It all started back in the day when I was a young teen, when I was given a glossy black Montblanc 22 fountain pen with a hooded nib. Only its cap survived the vicissitudes of time. At university studying music composition, I needed fountain and technical (stylographic) pens to write music scores with, before the advent of computers doing everything. When they did, my old pens were stashed in boxes, stored away with the things of my past. Fast forward several decades to early last year when I quite unexpectedly got seriously bitten by the fountain pen bug. Beginning by accumulating pens both new and vintage, I quickly began to hone in on more focused collecting and even repair. Today I'm a little surprised to find some 75 fountain pens very much at home in my collection. Some of my old pens are still part of my daily rotation: the Sterling Parker 75 wedding pen and the Montblanc Noblesse I was gifted by my mother-in-law with my name engraved. That's not counting the 40 or so lower-tired beaters coming in the mail to restore and to give a new purpose to. But every once in a while I think about replacing that old Montblanc 22 I had not known the true value of in my youth.

I will always miss my "Dude" Ohto pen. It was my first fountain pen and I carried it everywhere. It was scratchy as hell but it never failed to put down ink. It was raw aluminum and got scratched, dinged up, and just generally abused as I used it for my whole senior year of college. I lost it around the time I graduated in 2014, and it was at that point that I started buying pens compulsively. I guess I've just been looking for that special pen that will replace that junky little "Dude." Of course, I would never buy such a pedestrian pen again-- gold nibs or nothing. =P

The pattern on the Diplomat Excellence is truly....excellent. I haven't really gotten rid of any pens I own yet (Other than ballpoints) If I HAD to say I regret any disposal of pens, it would be any time I have thrown away a gel pen or promotional advertisement pen due to being misinformed. Not even my parents knew that gel pens and pens handed out by companies could be refilled, so much plastic and metal has been wasted due to misinformation.

That is one gorgeous pen! I think the pen I miss The most is my pilot Metropolitan. It was my first pen. I left it in my pocket. It got washed. The cap came off in the wash.and the nib got destroyed. I like the business-like, yet fun, style of the Excellence A. One pen that I used to have was a custom pen with a turned mule deer antler barrel and a turquise stone finial. The nib was a generic nib, and I can't recall it's size. Someone swiped that pen from me. I really miss it!

Sorry to be too late for your giveaway, David as I really like Diplomat. They are amongst the readiest writers in my collection and I find their steel nibs to be very good providing excellent ink flow. Initially, I thought the brand a bit overpriced but after several months of use, I find them to be a great value. Highly recommended.

Cool pen, and I love that singing. I lost my very first fountain pen - a Lamy Al-Star. I gave it away to a co-worker, got him going on pens, then he did the same. Just a note about these laser engraved pens; the laser etchings are magnets for dust, and over time, you will readily notice where your skin comes in contact with the barrel. Because these pens perform so well as writers, I ended purchasing another A2 with a glossy finish instead.

Great review and a kind give-away. The pen I regret moving out of my collection is a black and gold Aurora Ipsilon. I randomly found it at an antique mall shortly after I got bit hard by the fountain pen bug. I didn't have a lot of money at the time, so when I saw the Ipsilon, I was thrilled. It was less than half the price of retail and it seems that the previous owner had inked it up once and then put it away when the converter was empty. I'm not sure if you've owned an Ipsilon (maybe one to think about for review purposes), but it has a nice springy steel nib and feels great in the hand when posted. The reason I sold it was to try to control my pen addiction -- I decided to limit myself to black and chrome pens only so that I wouldn't succumb to the "that's pretty" purchasing syndrome. Still regret selling it, though, and I may have to pick one up again sometime.

I use fountain pens because of a problem with my ulna nerve if i bear down on a pen it puts me through a lot of pain. In my teenage years i was trying many pens and writing styles to figure that out a solution. The first pen i had that helped me with that problem was a Dr. Grip roller ball, I wrote the company a thank you and they sent me a really nice version of that pen. I have moved like 6 times since then and have lost it.

Nice review! Makes me want a Diplomat :D I used to have a Parker Sonnet ballpoint that was given to me as a gift. When I discovered fountain pens, my ballpoint pens (heretical writing instruments) went by the wayside and I lost track of it somewhere. Even though I wouldn't write with it very often, the sentimental value is enough that I wish I still had it.

I started earlier this year with fountain pens with the Jinhaos, Dukes, and etc. I have given away some of those pens as i have stepped my pen game up. I have been scoping out this Edison Collier in either antique marble or persimmon swirl that i think would be it for me.

When I was a kid about 13 years old, I found an old fountain pen in a bunch of old junk out in the garage. I have no idea what it was, but it had several replaceable nibs. The diplomat series of pens are pretty good, week made and good general purpose , steady pens to own. Great number of fantastic designs, and a reasonable price especially for the steel nibbed pens. I'm interested in seeing how the pen goes with the gold nib. It is a high added premium price added to the Excellence A, but it is probably worth waiting for, if the quality of the pen in its cheaper form extends to the gold nib variety. Interesting review though.

I've never heard that noise called "singing" before. Somehow knowing that it is an unusual characteristic makes it seem almost desirable, even though it bothers my ears. As for a pen that I don't have any more, mine was simply a Parker Plotter. It had a great deal of sentimental value to my wife and I because our first meeting was her asking to borrow a pen. I didn't give it away, though; I believe I lost it after we were married. Sigh. It was a nice pen, too.

I can't think of a pen that I regretted giving away, but I do miss my old blue Sheaffer school pen that I bought back in the early 70s. It managed to stick around till I lost it somehow a few years back. I wasn't using it any more, but I had a sentimental attachment to it. I'd bought it at the local drug store with baby-sitting money, and I thought it was beautiful. :) I wanted to add that I love how the Diplomat Excellence A combines a classic silhouette with a modern, almost industrial, finish. It's a really handsome pen and looks like the perfect size for me -- I like a slightly larger pen because holding a thinner one bothers my hand after a while. I probably need to change my grip or something. Question for you: some poems have a sort of graphite-pencil-sounding feedback. Is the singing just an extreme manifestation of the same thing, or are they caused by completely different things?

The pen I regret no longer owning was a Parker, not sure which one - my first pen, used it all through school in the early 1970s then left it on a shelf in the library at my university and somebody stole it - I'd used it so much the plastic had worn to the shape of my fingers. I was gutted :(

This is an excellent review! I especially love how you give complementary ink comparisons whenever you are doing your writing samples. That is what I call going above and beyond! I am a huge fan of lacquered metal pens. My favorite pen of all time is my Midnight Blue S.T. Dupont Olympio XL, in dark blue Chinese (or Urushi) lacquer over a metal base. I have long been looking at Diplomat, as they seem to be right up my alley. I am really hoping to win this pen, but if I don't, it is awesome that you have a discount code available. As far a s a pen I regret selling: I had a very nice gunmetal Pilot Vanishing Point with a perfect Medium nib that I sold. I wanted to try some vintage pens, so I sold it to fund them. I ended up not caring for them, and selling them, in turn. Looking back, I wish I had just kept the VP. Thank you so much for the excellent reviews. Unfortunately the rubber grip was disintegrating (it got really sticky and brittle) so I had to throw it away. I haven't found a replacement grip for it yet so it's pretty uncomfortable to use.

While moving a couple of years ago a Pilot Vanishing point went missing, I have fond memories of that pen...

The "singing" was quite jarring, reminded me of chalk on a chalkboard. I think you were a little too generous with Diplomat on that issue. Otherwise excellent review of an interesting pen. My only erstwhile pen was a Noodlers Ahab, a pen to be fiddled with which I did until I pretty much destroyed it. Learned a lot, though.

I'm fairly new to this hobby, and so I've got no pen I wish I still had. But I will mention a pen I regret buying, the Delta DolceVita it's got a m nib it's the fusion nib. It writes great but for the money I have other pens I like more. Thanks David for the giveaway.

Well, similarly to someone above I've never gotten rid of any pens, however I got big talent of loosing them during my school years ;) In regard to my favourite pen so far it would be parker duofold senior which i inherited after my grandfather and used extensively in the 90' (along with pelikans 1x & 2x series for comparison and shaeffer PFM M. IV which i didn't like much) to the point the nib turned to smth. like BBB or even stub one. I've never wanted to exchange the nib so the pen lies in a drawer as a souvenir.

Excellent Review, and interesting pen, though it looks quite like the MB Star walker metal and rubber. As for a pen I regret selling, non since I have a very limited collection but one I regret not buying is a Visconti Cosmos Black stardust that I saw and tried at a show.

Very nice review. I had a Pilot Custom 74 I gave away. I do miss that pen...

like the way this pen looks. thanks for.the review. I've only got 5 pens, and haven't had the chance to give any away, but I do know some people that would definitely use fountain pens when I do decide to give some away.
