I saw this video years ago when I first got my license but I've not been on the radio for about 4 years and thought it was time to dust off the gear now I have my own man cave. Soon looking to build a fan dipole, had one years ago and it was brilliant, no balun however I was wondering if I needed one, the last fan dipole I had was an inverted v and this one will also be an inverted v so I came back to this video for a refresher course, I was actually looking for 1:1 balun designs but thanks to this vid I know I don't have to have one now. Great video!! I live in Japan and I`m trying to study/learn the information on my own to get my amateur license. There is a lot of information out there but your videos have been instrumental in helping me acquire the "hands on" practical use information. Remembering the answers to the test is one thing but actually understanding it is another and you have really helped out in that department.

Just wanted to say thanks...I built an inverted v antenna today by these directions and an antenna calculator. Turned out great especially for barely being off the ground. Great video and information, superb!!! Just a friendly piece of advise, instead of grounding the clamp up top, just ground the bottom of the mast , that way the whole mast is grounded. Run a coppper ground rod into the ground right at the bottom of the mast, strap some coax cable shielding from some leftover coax, right to the mast and the grounding rod 👍

Very nice of you to take the time to explain so much, so well. I beg to differ regarding the perpendicular-to-dipole directionality of the Inverted-V. When dropping into the 90° V, the pattern loses ~3db to the broadside but adds energy toward the ends, causing an omnidirectional pattern including covering most vertical & horizontal angles, in fact if it could be installed in free-space a spherical pattern, or basically an isotropic radiator, would be achieved. Mine's 61' x 2, 450Ω + Tuner

Thanks for the Video! One thing I think could be added to the explanation of patterns is that when you get a dipole close to the ground is that it will transmit an NVIS (Near Vertical Incident Sky wave) pattern. This pattern is not good for DX, but is is good for having great HF coverage for a 300 mile area. This is great for tactical HF use. Since the signal comes from above, you can still make contact if you are inside a deep valley. This is how our military use it ,the bent antenna on HUMBEES

Its a fun topic! I've got limited space so indoor speaker wire dipoles has helped me discover on accident many great designs. Then I run low on speaker wire and think "Oh! I've got just enough to make a flat laying 10 meter wire beam!" or "I can use these extensions on my 10 meter antenna for 15 meters". Just get an SWR meter and have fun! I made a 220MHz antenna in 15 minutes to get on a net really quickly before. Although for my outdoor antenna I bought something prepared for 20 meters but for my stealth 40m antenna I plan on homebrew all the way.

Exactly! This is what I tried to convey in my last post. A Cloud Burner is an NVIS antenna, which is what is used by our military units, as well as many disaster relief units.
