Thank you for posting this video. My Onkyo TX-RZ50 arrived a few days ago. I used your tutorial to set up my receiver. I have never heard DIRAC in action before and WOW what a game changer. I was skeptical before but now I will never go back. I can't believe I have gone this long without it. For anyone hesitant about this product: run, don't walk, and get yourself set-up with DIRAC. I toggle the DIRAC room correction on and off while listening to my source content and the difference is breathtaking. So immersive. Thank you for your guidance 👍🍺

Hi Matt! Thank you for your feedback! I’m happy my guide could help. When I first got the RZ I felt overwhelmed and learned about this topic for several months to get it right. After that I wanted to share my findings so that other future RZ owners don’t have to search on the web for more info forever 😊Enjoy your RZ Matt and I’m glad everything sounds terrific now.

What is DIRAC? I have an older Onkyo unit and need an Amplifier. Would this amp be compatible with my system and speakers?
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 2 жыл бұрын
@@marciahoey3542 DIRAC is a digital room correction to make your speakers sound as good as possible in your specific room. It gets rid of too much base or highs. It works really well, even with older or not so high end speakers. You can use your old Onkyo as an extra amp, but the RZ50 will have to be the central hub for DIRAC to work.

This was so helpful. Thank you so much. The one thing I discovered, by doing some additional research, is when doing the speaker level adjustments after the Dirac filter has been transferred to the receiver you should use an external source, like a test disc. The internal test tones bypass the DIRAC calibrations so it wont be as accurate as using an external source.

Great vid full of useful info! I will point out a couple things with the crossover section. The LPF for the LFE channel shouldn't be set to 80, like you recommend. LFE content in movies can reach up to 120 HZ or more, so you want to set it either there or turn it off completely, otherwise you rob yourself of LFE content in movies. I'd also recommend against setting any speakers to full range unless they are extremely capable. there are virtually no tower speakers that can compete with a subwoofer in the low bass region.
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 4 ай бұрын
Hello Ryan. Thank you! The cut off frequency is heavily discussed under us surround audio guys. You can do 120Hz but if a movie is not mixed well (which unfortunately does happen too often) you might end up with voices, especially male voices, in your subwoofer and that really doesn't sound good. So if you set it to 80Hz you are making sure only the deep bass ends up in the sub and nothing else. The sub should really only playback what your main speakers can't handle. When you have descent L/R speakers they can take care of the upper band of the low frequencies with ease. And also "Full range" is the recommended setting even when you have bookshelf speakers. And when using room correction like DiracLive you know exactly what your speakers are capable off and when and where frequencies need to get handed over.

Dirac is a superior piece of software, the Onkyo receiver which is a huge beast,supplied without a manual is difficult to use and adjust. I had to download a 180+ page manual that was obtuse and made no attempt at explaining which control you should be using at any given time during the setup. Hours are spent learning the most basic functionality, it all could be so much simpler!

Hi Bennett, yes I was surprised too not to have a physical manual with this class of a receiver but those are the times I guess. And like you said the pdf manual doesn’t do much to tell you about Dirac. That’s why i studied it online for a long time, browser through message boards and watched tutorials and put together this video in the end to hopefully others out who felt overwhelmed at first too.

@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 8 ай бұрын
Hi Roy 👋 thank you so much! 😊 The signal to noise is finicky for sure. For my environment it was the AC humming away which by human ear wasn’t even that noticeable. I had to completely shut off the AC and everything worked fine afterwards. Try to raise the speaker levels a little bit so that the measuring tone is louder and try playing with the mic gain. And if you wanted to invest a little bit more, the UMIK 1 has a bigger sensitivity which can help in difficult cases. I made a second video about the UMIK 1 and was surprised myself how the results were even noticeably better. I hope you can make it work, DiracLive is not easy but totally worth it in the end.

Nicely Done. Hope your enjoying your new speakers. At the beginning of the video is the Master output & Mic gain set to an arbitrary low setting & what determines raising the Master output vs mic gain ? Thanks
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch Жыл бұрын
Thank you Deadline! Mic gain should be as low as you can so that the mic wont pick up any surrounding noises too easily. That is also valid for noises we might not hear so well ourselves (Air conditioning, water builder low hum) so it is recommended to chose a low gain. Master volume should be at a volume that’s definitely 20 DB over the background noise (you can see the levels moving on this screen when you have background noise). It all depends how noisy your surrounds are and you have to get DIRAC to be able “hear” its test tone loud and well enough separated from anything else that might be going on. It’s a little finicky but once its set the test tones should all go through.

Hello! As a gamer and movie enthusiast myself I can definitely recommend taking the extra time with room correction. Even if you dont want to do it right away, having it gives you the option later on if you decide to use it. The advantage with the Onkyo receivers is that you dont need to pay extra for DiracLive while brands like Denon make you acquire and pay extra for a license.

Hi Michael, thank you for watching! And gratulations to your new Onkyo NR7100! That's a great receiver and a cool setup idea. You should definitely be able to do that with the zone 2 feature. You have three slots for the DIRAC settings (so you can have three different settings if you wanted). So I would just use slot 1 for your surrounds and 2 for your stereo speaker. Should be no problem. I wish you lots of fun setting it up. 😎

Great vid. One question, do you by any chance know why the volume sounds to low? I have to set the volume to 80 - 85 to really feel/hear all the speakers working. Also, I was expecting the base to shake my apartment at these volumes, but it does not. My setup is a 5.1.2.
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch Жыл бұрын
Hi DJ, thank you so much! The volume settings depends heavily on the sound mix of each show production. With some ATMOS productions I have to pull the volume up to around 58. Gives ATMOS lots of headroom for the exploding moments. If you want everything all around to be louder you can evenly raise the volume settings within the receiver settings for each speaker (e.g. give every speaker a few more dbs on top) after everything is calibrated. Also check if the subwoofer can be upped manually (usually subs have an extra volume dial on the unit itself too). Let‘s make those walls shake 😎

I found that if you set the right side of the curtain to 500Hz it sounds much better and doesn't rob the speakers of their soundstage. tbh A lot of audiophiles recommend lower but my room sucks and below that the graph is all over the place whereas above that it's relatively smooth so basically you don't want to kill those high frequencies.
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch Жыл бұрын
Hi John, thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, it comes down to how your room sounds. In theory it is desired to have all frequencies towards the 0 DB mark to have all frequencies as even as possible. But personal taste plays a big role in all this too, like how I bumped up my bass for more cinema feeling. That's why its great that Dirac Live lets you change so many aspects of the filter design yourself.

The reason they say not to go above 500hz is because of off axis response may be negatively impacted by the correction. It depends on your speakers’ off axis response. Is it possible to create calibrations in a 2.1 Channel Speaker Configuration, SAVE IT TO MY COMPUTER, then create another calibration in a MultiChannel Speaker Configuration, SAVE THAT TO MY COMPUTER, and then be able to RE-UPLOAD/REINSTALL the appropriate calibration for my current Speaker Configuration I happen to be using? (I switch between 2.1 and 7.1.2) I haven’t found a way to do that with the mobile app on my phone but I’m hoping that’s possible to save presets/calibrations with my laptop in multiple speaker configurations? Thanks for any help you can provide - Great vid by the way! (Oh, and my receiver is an RZ50)

Hi LGL Studios, that’s a good idea and yes when you use the computer you can save as many different Dirac measurements as you want. You have more flexibility then when using the app. The only think you’ll have to change inside the onkyo is the speaker configuration as in going from 7.1.2 to 2.1 and vice versa. When you changed that inside the rz50 you can re-upload your saved Dirac measurement for the setup speaker number 😎

Thanks for making this video. I tried doing the calibration once and it didn't work very well. The biggest issue I'm having is clipping when doing the subwoofer measurement. I have to turn down the sub WAY WAY below the other speakers to avoid clipping. I also don't know what level the subwoofer should be set on the physical setting on the back of the sub. Also, also... should I set the correct distances and do the level matching in the Onkyo before doing Dirac?
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch Жыл бұрын
Hi TheMNbassHunter! I had the exact same problem with a new set of speakers and a new sub. What I did was to set the gain on the mic setting really low and match the other speakers volume to the subwoofer instead. That should get rid of the clipping warning. Physically set your sub to like 50% (12 o clock if it’s a dial). Dirac will set the distance and levels for you within the receiver after the measuring is complete. When you are done with Dirac make sure to give the sub a few more db again in the level settings because Dirac always is too shy on bass. I hope you can get rid of the clipping. It is an pain but you’ll get it done and it’s worth it in the end 🙂

I am pretty happy with the results. I did an A-B comparison toggling the Room EQ on and off and it is noticeably better. With EQ off by comparison, for example, vocals sound like they are being sung into a plastic cup. With EQ on, it's like taking the cup away. Everything opens up and sounds more natural. I had no idea how much difference it could make. I thought it sounded great before, but now I hear the differences! Also, with the 10db Harmon curve for the subs, I didn't lose my bass either! Cheers!

How do you calibrate speakers in a multizone setup with the Onkyo TX-RZ50? Does it matter if they use the internal amps or preamp/separate amplifier? My main room is set up as 5.0 (no sub), with 3-way Boston Acoustics T-830 towers up front, .The woofers are 8". My bathroom zone (internally amplified) is particularly boomy with Sony Mega Bass boombox speakers. BTW, I'm using the Onkyo Android application. No PC or MAC available. Should I be using the Dirac application instead of Onkyo's?

Hello 👋 Yes you can have up to 3 different DiracLive settings saved in your Onkyo. So you can have one for your main and a whole different one for your second zone. I’d always recommend using the computer app but if you have no choice I’d use the DiracLive live app instead of the onkyo one since that one is updated more often. I hope you can reach your second zone with the mic wire. Personally I’d use a calibrated usb mic on a laptop to measure both zones. No messing with the puck wire across your living space then. But it’s all possible. I’m really happy with my room correction since I have an open living room space. It fixed a lot of problems. Take your time and enjoy. The results will be worth it 😊

@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi AVgeek, thank you for your input! I really appreciate it. I am using an unusual speaker setup. It's a surround sound speaker system from Bose, that of course the audio community usually frowns upon, so I am not talking too much about it in my video. How it works is that all speakers are set to full size and all the speakers run through the subwoofer, which then "decides" where the transition happens. So the subwoofer does take over the missing frequencies of the satellite speakers. And since the subwoofer "knows" by factory settings, what the small speakers can or cannot reproduce, the sub takes over. That all happens outside of the receiver so I can not control that part directly. I contacted DIRAC about my unusual speakers but they confirmed that DIRAC still works with this setup. And most of it all: It did enhance my sound quality tremendously. Of course the better your speakers are the better the room correction. It was a big jump in quality for me though. And I did boost my bass a lot, I was thinking going "only" with +6db but for my room the bigger boost sounds best in my opinion. Especially for movies and games. My room is open and complex. I'll probably continue playing more with my settings, because you are never really done when you are setting up audio stuff 😊 Thank you again for your input. Exchanging experience and discussions are a great way to learn and understand things like these together better 😊👍

Hello Grant 👋That's a cool setup. You will be locked into a 5.1, 7.1 or similar setting with the room correction but you might be able to skip the speakers when Dirac is trying to play the test tone and doesn't detect it. I can't try this out right now myself but you should try it just for the hell of it. When Dirac lets you skip the "silent speakers" you will still be able to change curves and corrections of the detected speakers you have and export it into your RZ50.

@@SamDansCouch Can I ask one more question about the RZ50, since nobody even at Onkyo seems able to explain this to me? I have a 5.1 system (4 ceiling speakers, center speaker, and sub). I watch streamed movies and listen to streamed music (and my grandkids play games on the XBox). My question is how do I set the listening mode in order to get the receiver to automatically switch to whatever format is being delivered -- giving me 5.1 surround sound when the source is surround, stereo when the source is stereo? If I use "Direct," as I used to with my old receiver, that will cancel the room correction from Dirac. If I set to Dolby Surround ("DSurr"), that seems to provide surround from TV and streaming music whether or not the source is encoded with surround. Is there an obvious default setting that I should use? Would "Multichannel" work? The manual is very confusing, and your videos are very clear, so I'm hoping you can provide an easy answer that I'm missing.
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 10 ай бұрын
@@mschooler Yes auto swtich between stereo and multi channel is definitely possible and you should leave DiracLive activated at all times since it also works for stereo. I am not a fan of the “Direct” setting because like you said, the room correction goes out the window. I am using the auto switch channel with my Apple TV. Movies get routed through in Dolby Atmos and when I play a streaming song in stereo - the RZ50 switches to stereo mode. Keep in mind that the RZ50 remembers the output mode per input. So if you have one of your inputs set to something like “movies” it will remember it. Get your remote and hit the “Q” button. Check Audio-> Stereo Assign for FRONT (if you want stereo in your two main speakers). Get out of the menu and hit the “music” button and switch it to stereo. Now Atmos/Surround should still come through and stereo sources will be played back just in stereo. Hit the “i” at any time during playback to check the output mode. I hope this helps. You are right that this is a little confusing, especially since the “movie, music, game” buttons are not shown on screen until you hit one of them and then you need to cycle through the different modes. But having it on stereo should work with your desired usage 😎

Hi Drew, it can be finicky. I’m not sure if a new mic will be better, let me know (if you like) if it does. Hi RGB! It worked out of the box for me. Every device that gets routed through the Onkyo per HDMI should be able to show you the on screen display EXCEPT when you do eARC (The TV sending audio to the receiver instead) then you won’t get on screen display since you see the signal from the TV not the signal from the onkyo. In that case you can use the onkyo app which shows the current settings of your receiver.

Hi Jose! Do you mean an SPL meter? That doesn’t need to be connected to your receiver. Only the microphone which comes with the RZ50 needs to be plugged in. Hi Jean, yes you can have rear high instead of rear back. I don’t have rear backs either. By itself this receiver does 9 channels and two subs. If you want 11 you need to connect a stereoe amp to the rz50. Dirac live will set up all those channels when you have them set up.

@@DrAlanWeinstein Oh yes, the surround mix heavily depends on how well it is mixed by the sound producers. My favorite surround mix right now is the Netflix show Stranger Things. That is how Dolby Atmos should sound. Other movies might only have regular surround sound which is not as pronounced as Atoms. Newer productions though usually feature Atmos. Best place is either good Blu Rays or Ultra Blu Rays. And then streaming services like Netflix or amazon prime. Test different movies of your liking and enjoy your new system :)

Hi Mike, yes you can switch DIRAC on and off at any point in time and the RZ50 even remembers per input if you have the setting on or off. You have three different DIRAC Live slots to save three different configurations as well if you want to make one for music and another one for movies. Use the latest Dirac Live application for better bass since earlier versions used to "rob" you of bass. If it's still too little you should take a look at the Hermann target curves which gives you more bass for your measured target curve.

Hello 👋 I love your username. Don’t we all feel like this sometimes 😅 I’m not a fan of any of the standard music presets that AV receivers come with other than sometimes routing stereo music through all surround speakers. I am using my DiracLive setting for movies as well as for music. I made one setting that fits both needs and it works out nicely. I kept the measurement and didn’t boost any extra bass. But if you want to have a different sound for movies, like maybe exaggerating the bass for more sub action, I would go with a separate Dirac live setting. On the onkyo you can have three different Dirac live presets that you can customize to your needs. I personally like to keep it neutral so that the sound is as close as possible like the original mixer in the studio intended the movie/music to sound like 😊

Hi tinhwee30! I’m sorry you are having issues with the filter export. I never had issues but I did hear from other owners having the same problem. I own the RZ50. The Dirac calibration was a complete failure (becuz of Onkyo mic?). Not to be a total cheapskate but is there an alternate recommendation for a calibration microphone (to the UMIK-1) that doesn't cost $130???? Tried Ebay and was still pretty expen$ive. Thanks.
@SamDansCouch
@SamDansCouch 2 ай бұрын
Hi Neal 👋DiracLive can be touchy and you really need to take some time with it. I understand the frustration. The results are very good in the end though so it's worth the trouble. I did make a video on this channel comparing the Onkyo mic with the UMIK-1 and while the UMIK-1 puts the icing on the cake and is more sensitive, you can get good results with the Onkyo supplied mic too. What throws off the measuring is usually background noises, even ones that you don't necessarily hear by your own ear. So I would try to find a good time of the day to measure and also play with the volume sliders for each speaker to make them all at the same volume before the actual test tone measurements. You really want to avoid the clipping which can take some time to avoid by adjusting each speaker volume, especially the sub which I'd turn down for the measurement a bit. I hope you can get it to work. Don't stress yourself out and you can always come back to it later 👍

@SamDansCouch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, that is weird. Check if you have every input you want to use - set to the DiracLive slot number you used for your calibration (the receiver remembers this for each individual input). As long as you don’t retransfer your Dirac live settings from your app/computer the Onkyo shouldn’t change these settings by itself.

I would be interested to see someone do a DIRAC calibration with the mic included with the receiver, and then do the cakibrarion again with an aftermarket USB mic to see if there is a real difference between the two. I don't want to spend the money on a new mic if I don't have to.

No problem 👍There should be numbers but instead of distances like feet, inches or meters - numbers should be displayed in milliseconds. Those numbers can't be changed on the receiver itself since they are set by DiracLive. There should be tiny differences in the numbers though. So all numbers at 0 sounds like something went wrong. Maybe you should try and re run the calibration to see if that changes anything.
