Part of the genius of this song is the structure in a major key that doesn’t resolve to the 1. It propels us forward with a sense of longing and sorrow that is usually accomplished with the use of a minor key structure. Simple. Powerful.

Every time I hear this song, I think about my fellow brothers and sisters in my volunteer emergency services community worldwide. We didn't have to do it, but we chose to stand up and sign those papers knowing we will risk our lives to protect and save others any time there is a call. Our mentality of having to "go out, but not guaranteed to come back" is always with us. This song is about the tragedy of warfare and the stupidity of mankind, obviously. However, the mission of responding to dangerous and hazardous situations will hit all military and emergency services personnel sooner or later. We are all a band of brothers for that.

This song was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler wrote the song. The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and Great Britain over islands off the coast of Argentina to which each country claimed rights. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina attempted to reclaim one of the islands. Britain took back its territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict. The song was written in 1985 and released the same year In this song, Mark Knopfler sings about a soldier dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades, who stay by his side as he slips away. It is a look at the folly of war and the plight of those who fight it. 'We only have one world, but we live in different worlds,' he told the BBC. 'It's just silly, it really is. We are just stupid to take part in someone's war. ' The title is something Knopfler's father said. When discussing the Falklands War, he described the Russians and Argentines as 'Brothers In Arms', meaning they had similar ideologies. This phrase ended up being used as the title of the album.

Such a hauntingly beautifully sad song. Marks soft, subtle delivery belies the trauma and sorrow of a dying soldier, but not so much that it cannot move anyone to tears. I think on a world stage it is slightly under-rated as an anti-war song, but I think that goes with what you said about the song mid-point, it doesn't need to be in your face, it doesn't need to be shouted. Loved this reaction, thank you.

One of the best and most haunting rock songs ever created. An incredible message and delivery. Starting with the sound of distant artillery, this lament is aimed against all wars, but particularly those caused by aggression and greed. This song is meant to get us emotional and thinking about why. Why do we allow ourselves to be fools; manipulated over and over? Nationalism, like religion, has caused so much pain, death, and suffering. And for nothing.
@maxsparks5183

I must strongly disagree. There are some things worth fighting and dying for. Your country (“Nationalism” in your vernacular) is one of them. As is your brother or sister in arms. As is God. If there is nothing worth dying for how can there be anything worth living for?

Right on! Some Dire Straits! Looks like everyone is already telling you, but Mark Knopfler (the singer) was an amazing guitar player, but I feel like he's one of the ones that never gets mentioned as much, or gets as much credit for it. I use to have a roommate that was a huge Mark Knopfler fan. You should definitely do "Sultans of Swing", or the original music video for "Money For Nothing". It's a good song, but the video goes back to the early days of music videos, and was one of the first videos to use the new video technology at the time and animation that probably seems very cheesey to you, but was pretty amazing at the time. It was a pretty epic music video for it's time. Weird Al Yankovich, who is a comedic song parody artist going back to the 80s that I don't think you've reacted to yet, does a great parody of it in his movie "UHF". The song also features Sting on back up vocals, and I don't think you've reacted to Sting or The Police (his band from the 80s) either.
