Story behind it was- Mark was in a large electronics store in NYC, and he noticed the store's delivery workers watching the TVs playing in that store, and they had MTV playing on them. The workers started complaining about their jobs, how little money they make, and how they should have been musicians and MTV rock stars....

This was the essence of 80’s music. It was a departure for them, away from their rock blues. You must see the official video, which was quite ahead of its’ time and amplifies the theme of the song.

I was a young college student when this came out. I still remember being at a friend's house, slightly drunk, lying in front of one of the stereo speakers and they CRANKED this song. The escalation and opening riff is SOOO good very LOOOUUD. One of the greatest beginnings in rock history. The ending, well, not so much. :-D

I think as you guys are on this journey : you will get to understand how music has and was evolved from the 50s onwards, Dire straits are unbelievable, the whole concept of the song was about a totally new thing, a 24hr music channel called MTV , so I think it was a subtle dig at repetitive songs around that time where the video was more important than the song, so like I said the other day, listening to Queen, led zeppelin, pink Floyd, Bowie, Dire straits LIVE you will discover that not all popular songs in the 80s had no substance or talent etc for studio mixed etc.. Enjoy your journey. G uk.

I always have to tell my story about this song. My husband and I were working as contractors for several kitchen, bath and furniture stores. Every damn time we went in the stores, all the sales guys would be standing around watching MTV on the TVs for sale. So, immediately this became our theme song. We couldn't believe it. It was like they made a song just for us.

Guys, I was absolutely obsessed with this song back in the 80s. I loved it so much and if it came on the radio when I was driving to work, it was on at full volume!! Couldn't get enough of it, my friends used to laugh at me! The live version which they did at Live Aid is brilliant and I've watched it often on KZbin. Yes, I can understand that you're a bit disappointed in it because of Sultans of Swing (studio and live), you were expecting some a bit more especially as it was building up from the start, but as I say, the live version is very good. Sting sings the opening to it. Another live version I've often watched was done at The Princes Trust Rock Gala 1986 and that was brilliant - among others playing the song with them was Eric Clapton, Elton John on keyboards and Phil Collins on drums. How great is that!! It's on KZbin too. I enjoyed your reaction, guys, very understandable but please check out the live version.

This song is based on an overheard conversation. Mark Knopfler was in an appliance store and MTV was playing on a television inside the store. Hi George & Patrick, there is a version of this with Mark, Sting, Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton on backing guitar. Just type their names and it,ll come up. Another song I,d recommend to you is "Renegade" by a band called Toseland. The lead singer and pianist is a guy called James Toseland. He was World Superbike Champion in 2004 & 2007. He,s also married to a singer/songwriter from Georgia called Katie Melua.

Read the comments below, you will understand the song. It was almost a parody of some 80’s music, but it was such a great piece of music, all around, that you cannot really consider as such. It was also the theme for the MTV awards, I think in 1987.

Heres the lowdown on this great tune. This song is about rock star excess and the easy life it brings compared with real work. He wrote the song in the store sitting at a kitchen display they had set up

That opening is one of the all-time epic openings in rock history. It's just perfect. Sting's lead in is ethereal. Then the gradually increasing drums, the guitar stepping in and then taking over, followed by the transition to the song proper. What a perfect beginning. The rest of the song is an A, but the opening is an easy S-tier, matching up with any intro ever.

Part of the beauty of this song is the irony in the lyrics along with a crazy f'ing Knopfler guitar riff. The song is sung from the perspective of a bigoted appliance deliveryman. Alot of people freaked out on Mark Knopfler about the verse concerning the ....uhhh...homosexual rock star. What those people didn't and don't understand is that was not Mark's opinion but rather the words of the appliance deliveryman speaking through Mark. "I want my MTV" was the slogan used in the TV commercials back in the 80's when MTV was a 24/7 music video channel. Watch the video. It will make more sense.
