Yes, Clayton has it correct: As I explained when I suggested this track previously -- Mark was in a hardware store; on one whole wall of the store there were TVs tuned to MTV (Music Television); he overheard the workers making derisive and griping comments about the men in the videos and how easy those guys had it compared to their own blue-collar jobs (moving TVs and refrigerators etc.); Mark grabbed a pen and paper and wrote their remarks down verbatim, and they became the lyrics of the song. Given that they (Dire Straits) are musicians themselves, singing the lyrics in an MTV video, it's also somewhat self-parodic and good natured! Moreover, it's fitting because in contrast to some the 'glam rock' of the time, Dire Straits was 'pub rock'. As to the 'offensive' word at issue: 1) That was the word used by the blue collar workers themselves in the hardware store about the guys in the MTV videos (2) it was very common parlance at that time, and (3) it was used more to suggest 'poser' or 'pretty boy' (glam rock) rather than homosexual (i.e. gay guys wouldn't be concerned about getting 'chicks' for free, would they?). Context is everything! Lastly, am thrilled to watch you go down the Dire Straits rabbit hole!

The song backstory: Mark was in a big electronic box store in New York once. The whole back wall was covered in tvs and every one was tuned to MTV. Mark overheard two employees in the store talking about videos that were on MTV and Mark started copying down things the two guys were saying, including how they installed microwave ovens and delivered custom kitchens.

As someone who's been playing guitar since 1980, you have no idea how many people I've heard over the years literally say "I should have learnt to play the guitar." This was the first song to be played on MTV Europe and to be honest. No truer lyrics have ever been written.

As a gay man who was in his early 20s when this came out, so many people these days lack the concept of context. They hear a word and have a knee-jerk reaction to it without paying attention as to how it's used. As others have pointed out, it isn't the band calling anybody that. The song is from the point of view of the blue collar workers. They are being mocked for thinking being a rock star isn't hard work. They are small-minded and don't understand how tough it is to make it to the top, and their use of "that word" only emphasizes their limited view of the world. The workers may be using the word in an offensive manner, but that doesn't make the song offensive. Dire Straits never meant to insult or offend anybody. You can hear their voices dripping sarcasm. I can't speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, but this song never offended me or any other gay person I know. We understand the difference between when we're being slurred, and when the word is being used to portray a character in a bad light.

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits wrote the song "Money for Nothing" in 1985 after overhearing a conversation between two workers in a New York hardware store while watching MTV. The workers were making fun of the musicians on the screen, joking that they were making millions of dollars without doing any work. So as others have pointed out, this is Sting doing the "I want my MTV" part. This is because the Police did an ad for MTV where they said that very line. On top of that the music used for "I want my MTV" section is actually borrowed from the Police's "Don't stand so close to me" written by Sting... because of this Sting gets credit as co-writer of the music. Apparently Dire Straits was in Monserrat recording the album and Mark said something like "You know it would be great to have Sting on this" and someone in the Studio said (again something like)... "Oh, he's on holiday surfing just down the beach." so they went and told him. When Sting saw what they were working on, he told Mark "you've nailed it with this one." (again again something like). There are several versions of this story out there, this is based on Mark's recollections from several interviews I have seen.

Actually, one of the things I like most about Mark Knopfler’s songs is that they are generally stories, both the ones he’s written for Dire Straits and in his solo and collaborative performances. Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Done with Bonaparte, Lights of Taormina, Sailing to Philadelphia, Brothers in Arms, Postcards from Paraguay, Long Cool Girl, Tunnel of Love, Golden Heart, If This is Good-bye and many more. Songs about history, people, events - all fascinating both musically and lyrically.

Anecdotally, Mark was in a hardware store, and his song "Sultans of Swing" came on the display TVs, and he heard the stocker/delivery guys bitching and moaning about how the f*****s on MTV had such easy lives. He grabbed his notebook and a pencil, then proceeded to follow the guys around the store, copying down everything they said. Then he put it all into a song, and, in so doing, created one of the most recognisable guitar riffs of all time. Mark and his brother are Glaswegians, so the f word has a far different connotation, especially in that era.

I Want My MTV became a mantra for the early 80s teens, as cable companies were removing MTV from their line up due to customer complaints (basically parents, who were the paying customers). It was the summer between my Junior and Senior year of high school when MTV started. It was 24 hours of videos hosted by V-Jays (No reality shows etc). We instantly became hooked on watching, some parents weren't thrilled.

That whole intro is legendary, and the riff is just insane. To this day, this is the first song I play on any new speakers/headphones/amps to test them out - it covers a huge dynamic range, and it's totally kick-ass, what's not to love. Btw, Mark stopped using the f-slur when he plays this live a bunch of years back - the 80s were a different time, when that word got thrown around way too casually, and he was directly quoting what he heard in the convo that inspired the song, but he's changed it with the times. Mark Knopfler overheard two guys in a White Goods Store, and wrote the song based on their conversation: "The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/​custom kitchen/​refrigerator/​microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real." And if you are into "a good snare drum", check out Bill Bruford. He was in Yes (he played on Roundabout) for their first 5 albums, then moved to King Crimson, had his own band called Bruford and a band called UK. Bill is an amazing drummer.

In this song, Marek satirizes the music industry through the eyes of a storekeeper in an electrical appliance store, whom he overheard and directly used the phrases used by him in the stanzas and chorus. Dire Straits is an incredibly versatile band. Next time try "Calling Elvis" from their 1992 "On the Night" live album.

If you want more Dire Straits, i recommend "One World" "Brothers in Arms" "Industrial Disease" "Romeo and Juliet" "Tunnel of Love" "Your Latest Trick" "On Every Street". A couple of those are just personal favorites but there are a LOT of great DS tunes. You almost cant go wrong with them. Happy reacting!

Brian May is a cosmic-level superstar; legendary rocker from the '70s and decades onwards, then actual goddamn astro-physicist who was on the asteroid "Bennu" sample return mission which was in the news not very long ago at all. The story behind the song is, he was moving in to a new apartment and he had Sting from the Police with him, Sting does the backing vocals, anyway they overheard the removal guys moaning about how they have to work hard and these rock bands guys don't do anything. Might I also suggest you get the brothers in arms album, it has all the best songs they ever did. By the way I'm probably going to be one of your oldest subscribers (70) but I feel the exact same emotions listening to these sounds as you, also I'm ex military and as you figured out brothers in arms is about war and effects on people, I suffer from PTSD and the only way I sleep at night is I put the album on, shove in my ear buds and crank it up all the way, it stops me from thinking and allows me to sleep. Sorry to go on but keep showing the emotions, you've brightened my day

I don't even know Brothers in Arms, never heard it. Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing were huge hits. Two of the biggest of that generation. You could not avoid hearing them everywhere.
