Interesting lyrics describes how come what may, jazz guys will go do there thing Great reaction. Yeah original demo Mark did it believe on a steel string didn't sound full enough and yet had composed it that way I think so switched to his Strat. Never uses a plectrum always finger style.

Dire Straits is the number one band that I wish I had gotten to see live. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists, certainly one of the most distinct. They did a concert in '92 in Nimes, France. The versions of their songs from that concert are epic, my personal fave. Other songs to check out "Private Investigations" and "Brothers In Arms".

Hi Church Boy, alright tomorrow is Easter, Jesus is Lord! This is the rich time of the '70 that we had in our youth with a lot of quality songs. I'am a soundengineer mixing concerts and I can understand what you feel by listen to this song but as you now Mark Knophler is the guitar player and singer. And indeed he was calm because there was no pressure on him. This was the start of a huge carreer. In the same way is the song "youre the voice" from John Farnham an amazing song this time because of his voice. At that time everything has to be pure, no autotune or plugins. Some young kids says about the '70, I was born too late.

Just to give props to the rhythm guitar, that is David Knopfler, Mark's brother. David was fired (or he quit) the band after their second album. When recording their third album MAKING MOVIES David left, and Mark wiped David's parts and recorded his own.

So Mark Knopfler is the guitar player, singer and lyricist. You noticed different guitar tracks; his brother David plays the rhythm guitar here (he left the band a couple of years later), but Mark is also playing the rhythm parts inbetween his licks. To see the magic in action, I also suggest the Alchemy live version (this time with rhythm guitarist Hal Lindes).

The "other Guitar" on the studio recording is Mark Knopfler's brother David. As has been said look at the band that is on the Alchemy live Album. Remember Dire Straits sold over 130 million albums and after disbanding Dire Straits Mark has made 9 solo albums plus a number of albums of film music he wrote. Mark is one of the top Guitarists ever. He played with Dylan, Clapton, Steely Dan. The Everly Brothers, Chet Atkins and loads more. Note his unique finger style playing.

BTW the lead guitar and the lead singer is mark knopfler, this man is a freaking one man show. The other guitar is david knopfler playing rythm. Mark know uses a clean sound on the guitar, this is another proof of how good he is, if you are not so good on the guitar it will show very clearly on a clean sound guitar registry. And please take a look at the live version, you will get a different impression of mark knopfler and his band.

You should check out their album "Brothers in Arms." Mark Knopfler's guitar playing on the title song is sublime! The only song on the album that I don't love is the one that charted the top 40 and is not all that great - "Money for Nothing." EVERY other song on the album evidences the restrained, austere, but complex chords of Knopfler's genius.
