Dire Straits were probably the biggest band in the world in the mid 1980s when their Brothers in Arms album sold 30 million copies. Here's just a few suggestions from an extensive catalogue: Check out other live performances such as: Brothers in Arms (1988 Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert) I Think I Love You Too Much (1990 Knebworth Concert) You and Your Friend (1992 On The Night) Also check out Mark Knopfler's (singer, songwriter, lead guitarist) solo work and duets such as: Boom Like That! Song for Sonny Liston Sailing to Philadelphia (with James Taylor) If This is Goodbye (with Emmylou Harris) There'll Be Some Changes Made (with Chet Atkins) Oh, and Mark's film soundtracks too: Wild Theme and Going Home (From Local Hero) Once Upon a Time...Storybook Love (From The Princess Bride) Altimira (From Altimria)

You've just listened to one of the world's truly greatest singer/songwriter/performers in the shape of Mark Knopfler leading Dire Straits, one of the greatest EVER UK exports to the world back in the late '70's and '80's. I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits in small venues just as they were becoming famous. Seeing Knopfler play live is an incredible experience. We were front row in a small club. So close we got all their autographs, and even the playlist from one of Mark’s amps. Will never forget it. Knopfler has such a unique way of playing. His finger picking style is like no one else. His guitar just sings. He’s never gone after the spotlight and shies away from too much exposure. But those in the industry know he’s one of the greats. Unlike other bands whose sound can suffer a bit when playing live, his solos are legend. One of the best live songs is Tunnel of Love. His solo on it will take your breath away. And it’s great whether you listen to the studio version, or live. You’re choosing some really fantastic music to react to, and here you’ve discovered another of the greatest rock artists of all time.

Great reaction. I would absolutely recommend 'Telegraph Road' next, also from Alchemy. Then go for other great songs like Tunnel of Love (Alchemy version), Private Investigations (Live in Basel is a good version IMO), Brothers in Arms (Music for Monserrat or Live in Nimes versions are good IMO), Money for Nothing (there are many good versions out there, but the Music for Monserrat version is somehow special with Sting on vocals, Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton as accompanying guitar!!). These are probably the most famous DS songs (also Romeo and Juliet and Walk of Life which are also great but I wouldn't personally include them in my top 10 DS songs). Then there are other less known 'gems' like 'Where Do You Think You're Going', 'Planet of New Orleans', and many more

I'm a big fan of this particular song and of Dire Straits, but your straightforward style is what kept me here listening until the end. FYI: Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist is also a talented songwriter. Check out Private Dancer performed by Tina Turner. Knopfler wrote it and contacted Turner, who he thought would express it best. While I couldn't imagine a better person to perform it, hearing Private Dancer will give you an idea of Knopfler's range. Many thanks...I'll be back!

Why Mark Knopfler never received the same level of acclaim given to Eric Clapton is beyond me. I always think about the lyrics from this song, "Check our Guitar George, he knows all the chords. But it's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing." when I listen to the song, "Brothers in Arms." Listen to that if you want to hear a guitar cry. It dissolves me every time I listen to it. Look for a longer version to get the full instrumental.

Sultans of Swing was written about a band MK saw playing once in South East London. Mark Knopfler is for me the best guitarist out there. I've seen him several times at the Royal Albert Hall, London and the O2 in Greenwich. I've seen Clapton too, and MK trumps Eric for me. Not only is he a great guitarist, he's also a fantastic composer and lyricist. Listen to Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel Of Love. The composition and lyrics are just brilliant. To continue the journey into the guitar Gods of the 70's check out Stevie Ray Vaughan "Texas Flood" Live at El Mocambo. Always a treat and I never get tired of it!

I love the way people watching this and genuinely reacting for the first time think he's peaked - OK he's peaked now - OK now he's peaked - Holy shit he still hasn't peaked - OK I'm just going to go with it, I give in.

Eric Clapton famously described Mark Knopfler as "the best of us".

Great that you enjoyed this. I hope you'll take a bit of time and listen to more of Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits - especially some of the other all-time classic live numbers, like "Telegraph Road," "Brothers In Arms" or "Tunnel of Love." This is some of the finest playing, finest soloing and finest music written and performed by the very best musicians that any of us have ever had the good fortune to hear and see in our whole lives. And that's not an exaggeration.

I saw them live in the late 1980's. Crazy skilled band and many good songs to boot

Mark Knopfler is justifiably famous for his guitar playing, but he also was a master storyteller. For something totally outside of the Dire Straits vibe, watch his video of "Sailing to Philadelphia" where he teams up with James Taylor.

You need to react to them playing Telegraph Road Alchemy Live, same concert as this. It's even better. @Rad Jarrett The Introvert you will appreciate just how good Mark Knopflers finger picking style is on the electric guitar, something most people only do on acoustic guitars. That's how he gets so much beauty out of his playing his guitar. Alan Clark on piano and main keyboard, don't remember the second keyboard player. John on bass and Hal on Rhythm and Mark the leader and singer and lead guitarist and Terry Williams on drums. Try Telegraph Road Alchemy Live and also their official Brothers in arms.

Look at most guitarists then look at Mark Knopfler. Most look like they are working on their solos. They sweat with tons of arm movement and looking at the finger positioning. Mark looks like he is just having fun and makes playing the guitar look easy.
