At the restored Spanish City, they have incorporated the opening lyrics in to the steps outside, a brilliant tribute to this masterpiece

I was at this gig and 40 years later, its still up there with the best. The musicianship across the whole band was amazing. We're so lucky its been well recorded. Sultans of Swing from Alchemy is amazing and then you need to see them play Telegraph Road

A beautiful and lovely reaction by you to this performance. We could see and feel it with you too. You might want to see another two songs, Sultans of swing and Telegraph road from this very same concert, they are outstanding. I was at Edinburgh in 1985 to see Dire Straits. Wonderful.

David Knopfler had left the band years before. As Mark says at the beginning it's about being in love, being in a band. The Spanish City (a Theme Park) was near Marks home as a teenager in the North East of the UK.

So much great Dire Straits stuff out there with no strikes. (I have a channel. I know about strikes) Anything from ‘Alchemy’ is awesome. Terry Williams, the drummer is, as a drummer myself, the closest thing to the ultimate being that we as mere mortals can comprehend.

I'm loving your reactions!! Telegraph Road for me is the greatest rock song ever written and there Alchemy live version is the best performance of it. It showcases the immense musical talent of all the individuals within the band and the amazing chemistry between them. I believe you will love it!! Thank you and best wishes from the UK. Take care.

❤❤❤Beautiful ... this song tells of a love that has blossomed but never realised .. the Spanish city really exists in Newcastle and they have written the words of this song on the entrance. Now I recommend other masterpieces like Brother in arms (live) or Telegraph road (live) or Romeo and Juliet (livealchemy)

It's nice to hear your reaction from such a young person (not a criticism). This was I believe a 'coming of age song' based around permanent and season fun fares in the north of England, The Spanish City etc., and I believe Knopfler describes the experience of being on the crux of moving into adulthood and experiencing 'first love' (I could have caught up with her easy enough, but something must have made me stay' and still not quite wanting to let go of childhood. It's happy and sad. This is why the song has such emotion. I was 14 when this song was released. I cry every time I listen to this (live or studio version).

Telegraph Road from this Alchemy Live concert is on a level that hasn't been equalled for me since I was a child hearing it on cassette tape in the back of my dad's old Volvo. Once Upon A Time In The West from this gig is also atmospheric, energetic heaven. Hell, anything from this concert is a must. Love your reactions 👍

The ‘Tunnel of Love’ was a ‘ride’ at ‘Spanish City’ - a seaside holiday park/fair, much beloved of us ‘Geordies’ from Newcastle, in the North-East of England. Scenes of my youth, from long, long ago. Somewhat ironically, I first heard this track whilst having a drink one night, at a beach-side bar, on the Greek island of Corfu. Romeo and Juliette next, ta!

This is an amazing song and performance, it's about Mark's youth, growing up around Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and his visits to a place on the coast called the Spanish City, being at the fun fair etc, at the Spanish City now, the lyrics to this song have been engraved into the walls. Mark has many, many great songs, try, Private Investigations from the On The Night concert.

I saw Dire straits for the first time in Verona in 1991 and I was on Mark Knopfler's last solo tour in 2019 .. Also as a soloist he has composed wonderful songs such as speedway at Nazareth(live),why aye man (live),Saling to Philadelphia or the sweet .”Wherever I go “with Ruth Moody ..

I love and I always loved Dire Straits. Such a talented band with insane complicity. I saw them live 4 times and it was always a different and great journey. I love your comments and channel, especially when you 'did covers of Black Sabbath as a real Ozzy Osbourne' hidden girl. I hope you will react more to 70's / 80's and 90's bands ..... such great music during these decades ..... Take care !

Welcome to the wonderful world of Mark Knopflers art. He is a master story teller, musician, performer and of course guitarist. For more dire straits see Telegraph Road - Alchemy live and Private Investigations live. But there is so much more from the Dire Straits. MKs career continued solo after the dissolution of the Dire Straits in the 90s. He has since recorded 9 albums and 9 movie scores. My favorite movie scores of his are Local Hero and The Princess Bride. Enjoy.

Brilliant. That’s been a favourite of mine for nearly 40 years. Telegraph Road and Sultans of Swing from the same concert are equally great. David Knopfler had left the band by this time. Also Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations. Pretty much anything from the “Alchemy Live“ tour.

Wonderful group and wonderful music. Knopfler was a master at his craft and one of the greatest guitarists ever with a touch that was as deeply moving. I would suggest music from their greatest live performances such as Live on the Night 1993, Brothers in Arms is stunning as is Romeo and Juliet. Also there final night in Sydney Australia around that time, a very emotional night. Always good are Sultans of Swing and of course Telegraph Road. For me his best live performance ever was a small live gig around 17 years ago called 'A night in London'' musical perfection with Sultans of Swing the ultimate best ever!

One.of my favourite Dire Straits songs because technically it's fairly complex.A better, in my opinion, performance of this song was at Sydney in 1986. Mark & David Knopfler were in the original line up with bass player John Ilsley (bassist in this performance). In this line uo were Hal Lindes (guitar) Terry Williams (Drums) Alan Clark (Keyboards) Guy Fletcher (Piano) Chris White (Sax & Flute) On the Sydney tour Hal was replaced by American Guitarist Jack Sonni. Mark met Jack at Buddy's Guitars where he worked. Jack studied literature and was for a while the Manager Writer in residence at Marth's Vineyard. American steel guitarist Paul Franklin often played with the band. Mark's style is fairly unique finger picking, he developed the technique of bending or vibrating THREE strings at the same time. Jack loved music and the guitar and was a flamboyant character. He died this year on August 30th age 68. I recommend you view the 1986 version of Tunnel of Love and also check out Brothers in Arms.

Song called Brothers In Arms from DIRE STRAITS Live ON THE NIGHT 1993. If you react to this, have your tissues handy. Loving your channel and reacting to my favorite artist MK. Did you know he's left handed playing right handed guitar so he has incredible control on those strings that he bends sometimes 3 at once to get a unique sound. Cheers 🎸🎸🎸

the organ at the beginning is a nostalgia piece for 'baby boomers' ferris wheel, basically marks a romantic in his soul so its a lovely song. .. goes quiet then mark sings And girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did Like the Spanish city to me when we were kids Girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did Like the Spanish city to me when we were kids i guess thats what it feels like to be love

You are so lucky to have the good fortune to hear their songs for the first time. But for me, even the 1000th time is as satisfying and amazing and wondrous and emotional as the first time around. One of the greatest bands ever to grace a stage. As for more eargasms from them where do we start? Sultans of swing, Telegraph Road, Romeo and Julie (same Alchemy tour), Brothers in Arms (Sidney or 1985 Mandela concert), One upon a time in the west, Private Investigations, On every street, Calling Elvis, Private Investigations. Should all be live performances (Sydney, Wembley or from On the Night 1993).

I ACTUALLY LOOKED UP THE (LYRICS) AND FROM WHAT I READ THE SONG IS ABOUT A CARNIVAL OR (FAIR) AS WE CALLED IT IN ENGLAND. MARK KNOPLER GREW UP IN (NEWCASTLE) ENGLAND. HE USED TO GO QUITE OFTEN TO THIS FAIR WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME. HE USED TO TAKE HIMSELF & HIS GIRLFRIEND ON (THE TUNNEL OF LOVE) THE CARNIVAL OR FAIR WAS CALLED (THE SPANISH CITY)

Great video, thank you so much! A little story..just before DS became famous, they did a lot of universities in the UK. Now at that time punk bands were flooding the venues every where, so when DS were due, looking at the band name, a LOT of the students thought ahh, Dire Straits, sounds possible punk, obviously not..when they came on stage, every one, punks, prog lovers, metal etc, all enjoyed the concert, that says a lot, including myself. .
