Alchemy live 1983 from Hammersmith Odeon version is just amazing. Terry Williams on drums just blows the song out of the water

Thanks for the reaction, yeah, D-S's are a hell of a band, amazing through and through. Had the pleasure of seeing them in the UK when the started playing at universities before they were famous about 1977 time at Durham and they were amazing then! I was lucky and stood just underneath Mark on the night. One of the best guitarst's of all time, that is for sure. Cheers and thanks again!

I'll tell you something, it might be not of your interest, but anyway ...I was 11 by then, now I'm 48 and I was playing in my parents' garage and I heard my neighbor listening to this song and I thought "that's MY SOUND". Wow...I just knocked at his door and asked him to check the LP up. Love at first sight. Thanks and thanks for such a real and deep reaction. And yes ...Knopfler has this thing ...he transformes a very simple part of a Friday night into a brilliant song.

Mark Knopfler at his magnificent best. Please try 'Brothers in Arms' from their 'On the night' live show and also 'Romeo and Juliet' from the same show...both sensational and emotionally moving!

I've always prefered this live performance because of that piano and guitar part at 7:00, i have the same reaction as you. One other amazing one is Mark Knopfler - Local Hero live at Monserrat. The same goes for the David gilmour High Hopes performance in Royal Albert Hall, That acoustic guitar with strings ending is pure bliss.... Check it out!:)

Hi Laurie I always loved ‘Private Investigation’ where Knopfler speaks the dark lyric all the way through, but plays the great acoustic guitar accompaniment with his ‘claw-hammer’ finger style beautifully- I used to know all the. spooky narrative when driving my car and listening to this song as loud as it could be! You asked if there were other Dire Straits music that you should listen/react to. Definitely Sultans of Swing on the Alchemy live music video. Going Home from the Local Hero film - "wild theme" acoustic version is truly "angelic". The live version of Going Home on the "On the Night" live performance video. "brothers in arms" of course, "Money for Nothing", "You and your friend" - Mark really makes the guitar weep on that track."skateaway", Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, etc, etc - basically everything that Mark and the band have ever done!

This is good. The live version from the " Alchemy " album is the gold standard. MK sings better, the rest of the band is spot on(drummer Terry Williams ALMOST steals the song from MK). It is on KZbin, give it a listen

Hi Everyone. This is NOT actually Dire Straits. It is of course Mark Knopfler but this is a new band he put together to support his solo career. They are superb as well. He has carried on producing new music under his own name and performing live with the new band for years. Including a lot of the old Dire Straits numbers. I last saw him live with this band in late 2018 or early 2019 (I think). Stunning as always. I must echo the comments others have made though. The "Alchemy live" version of this song, is better. Much higher energy than this.

I believe the bass player in the video was John Ilsley, the original Dire Straits bassist.

@@andypandywalters I can see why'd you'd think that Andy. He does look very similar but this is Glenn Worf. A very talented American musician who has been touring with Mark Knopfler for a lot of years now. I've seen them live a few times myself.

Not Dire Straits of course. Mark had shut down the band at this time. This is Mark with a completely different set of musicians. His name is pronounced Nopfler (the "K" is silent). Dire Straits sold 130 million records and Mark has released 9 solo Albums (plus a lot of Film Music). Anything from the "Alchemy" live Album/Video is great. Too many great songs to pick out favourites. I have seen Dire Straits 7 times in concert and Mark Knopfler after he had gone solo another 8 times over the years.

Nice reaction, but the Alchemy Live version is better. Mark is unusual for a lead guitarist in that he does'nt use a pick, just his fingers, and his last name is pronounced Nopler. Brothers in Arms is a very emotional song which I think you'd like.
