It's one of their best tracks that somehow gets forgotten...

A friend of mine used to call this "falling-off-the-end-of-the-bar-at-midnight" music 😅. I love the way Mark steps back and lets the sax take the lead.
@sourisvoleur4854Ай бұрын
Sign of a great artist -- they don't insist on being the center of attention. Paul Simon is also very good at stepping back. He lets guest stars take whole songs sometimes (especially on Capeman) or halves of songs ("Homeless" on Rhythm).

Love this song. Was underated as it didn't get much radio air play. That kept it fresh to me. Love the sax, love the rhythm, and always thought the lyrics were some of Mark's best. Very clever. Thanks for playing. Enjoyed your reaction to it. 👍

Grad school, Chicago, 1985. Far from home, no friends handy. This album was a balm to my very melancholy soul, this song especially.

Good one. Thanks JP. Songs like this used to be called a “deep cut”. Didn’t get radio play but a real solid song.

Strangely, it got quite a bit of radio play in Brazil. From Brothers in Arms, I only knew So Far Away and this one before my dad ever bought the CD (the first CD we ever bought in fact!).
@AriadneJCАй бұрын
There was a local radio station back at home that I regularly listened to (way down in Padstow, for anyone wondering) that went through a period of playing this even though it was 10-15 years after it was released. Whenever I hear it, it takes me straight back to being about 15 and being back then. I would probably hate it if it didn't have that association but as it is, it holds a dear place in my heart, sending me back to being a teenager and a certain 'late evening' feel.

Just a perfectly sleazy sounding sax, it fits the whole late night city mood of the song so well. One of my favorites from the album.

The live On The Night version is soooo good. The crowd literally is signing the sax part.

Did you know that the album was the first digitally recorded CD ever to come out ? as alot where using analog recordings still when releasing on CD (the newest format at the time) Brothers in Arms is another standout song on the album. 12 keys might be referring to music literature.

Same for me...I'd agree it's one of their best all time tracks...Certainly it appeared on at least one of the 'best of' compilations. Knopflers words and melancholy voice are perfect for each other....conjures up the late night early hours of a seedy New York where Knopfler was living at the time he wrote it..'twelve keys' refers to the 12 musical keys...

Mark Knopfler still played this song in his last tour (you can chekc the songs from this tour on MK's channel) a very enjoyable one, very different from the other songs of the album. It is unfortunate that this song is in the middle of a blockbuster album full of radio hits like Walk of life or Money for Nothing. We can say it is the hidden gem of the album. I also enjoy very much Why worry from this album.

Trivia: when this album was released back in 85, the LP version did not have the trumpet intro, it started off with the first sax notes. The CD version did have it, along with the extended outro for 'Why Worry.' ... We LP buyers got hosed, and needed to buy the CD as well to get the full monty.
@michaelbaucom4019Ай бұрын
Cassette version also had full versions of Why Worry, Your Latest Trick, and extended versions of So Far Away and Money For Nothing

Hi Justin. Dave from Across The Ocean. For me the sax makes this song, which I know as one of the UK singles rather than a track from the album (which I've never owned, unlike just about everyone else!). Maybe that's why I don't recognise the trumpet intro, which is also terrific. As you say, it's an infectious song, but I've never been fussed on Mark's vocals here.

JP---the thing about "Brothers in Arms" is that they're all the best tracks on the album. Each is better than the other in some way. That sounds like gibberish, but once you've done it a song at a time for KZbin, give yourself a straight-through listen and see if you don't agree.

The whole Brothers in Arms album is superb, even if you remove the two big hits Walk of Life and Money for Nothing which for me have never sat quite right on the album, it is a wonderful listen.
@michaelbaucom4019Ай бұрын
Your Latest Trick would have easily fit in on any of MK's solo albums. It is a foreshadowing of the last Dire Straits album On Every Street and MK's solo career. This isn't necessarily a rock song-- one reason why MK wanted to end Dire Straits and go solo was to do more than rock songs
@cedricmilford5254Ай бұрын
There’s the hits, yeah they are good. But then there’s the deeper cuts, like this one, that may not get the attention it deserves. But WOW! Be prepared, because there are more deep tracks on this album 👍🏻
