Lovely soil fertility, no mess no smell. Direct Composting is the simplest composting method for small gardens and works fast to improve your soil fertility.
Bury kitchen scraps directly in your garden borders or vegetable garden to make compost right in your garden soil. This is the most straight forward and easiest way to make compost. No turning, no heaps, no mess, and an instant solution to kitchen waste.
Direct composting works well for all peelings, tea bags, and coffee grounds, banana peel, apple cores, and a some paper, eg kitchen towel or egg boxes. Eggshells, hole onions, and citrus take a little longer, but no more than in a hot composting system. Avacodo pips and whole potatoes will tend to sprout, even when buried 12-14-inches below the surface. This method will directly feed worms and will increase the numbers in your garden soil
The best time to direct compost in the vegetable garden is after a row is harvested, in a flower border you can use this method in any free bit of soil, but avoid digging too close to established or growing plants and shrubs. Do not plant anything until the organic matter decomposes. The exception to this rule is potatoes which can be planted immediately above the Keep the area moist to provide perfect conditions for earthworms. You will surely create worm casting right in your garden.

Thank you how long did the hedge clippings take to compost. I would be a little wary with hedge clippings as it could affect soil fertility adversely.

I try to get to the bottom of the top soil layer which is quite shallow in this vegetable garden, also ours is quite a full bucket size compost bin, so a good hole is needed each empty.

From Regina, Saskatchewan. Before the city began a city wide composting program this past year I simply buried our kitchen scraps & much of our spring soft yard waste into the garden box soil once thawed. Usually April sometime. Did the same thing in fall after garden is done & before soil freezes. For winter I took 6 or 8 5 gallon pails & layered them (50/50) with leaves from the fall harvest of fallen leaves & kitchen scraps collected in the house. Again In spring once everything thawed I buried about 1 pails worth in each garden box. I also have a wooden sided bin that I mix/bury excess compostable organic kitchen & yard waste that is available for use in other parts of the yard as well. Periodically I find yard scrap not decomposed when soil turned later in the season but never kitchen scraps. Otherwise no other issues except for periodic smell when turning the compost bin or when I dumped the winter pails into the garden but in either case once covered with soil the smell was gone. Now with the city composting program I’ll be doing away with my winter composting system.

@@thejasn6209 I'd say soft skined like cucumbers, apples, etc might take 1-2 months before it disappears, without earthworms but might take sooner if you have them. While other things like cardboard, egg shells & onion peels seem to take longer so try to break them into smaller pieces to fasten it up.

I want to try this with trenches in-between my rows of plants. I saw one video that warned that decomposing kitchen waste draws nitrogen out of the soil while it's breaking down. I need to ADD nitrogen to my soil, so should I do this type of composting far away from my current rows of plants instead of in-between?

@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 I do not eat a lot of shellfish anymore either, but growing up, we ate seafood 3-4 times a week at least. Once I moved away from home as an adult, I was stunned to find out that not every city/state was as blessed with abundant seafood the way we were in Louisiana. Consequently, seafood in my current home state for example is much more expensive than it would have been in Louisiana. Shrimp and crayfish are delicious. Try some! 😀

@gardenerscottageblakeney1316

I' m not sure sandy soil can be a challenge but this method will add more humus to the soil which can help in lots of ways. Dont worry of you have no worms the microbes will break down the compost. I would not buy worms they would probably just die if the soil is not worm friendly. Just improve the soil and hopefully the worms will appear, athough we had a very sandy garden in past and we also did not get worms.

@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 Thank you for your information. My soil is actually very heavy clay, not sandy. It is adobe, which the early settlers here have used to make bricks for their houses. digging is way easier if you hose down a single area for a couple minutes exactly where you will dig with a large shovel. i dig a hole like 4 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet deep in 1 hour, which should take over a week to fill up with kitchen scraps from the family. i figure watering is also not a waste as it means you wont inhale dust while digging and also feeds water to the ecosystem of bacteria that are always in dirt. but it may be friendlier on the back to only dig like 1 foot down, especially as i may not have enough food waste or time to fill up trenches that are 2 feet deep by the time i want to start planting in a year
