@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Randy. The hook we use to shake fish is called a gaff. They come in different lengths and we also use them to pull halibut and cod onboard. Our vessel is a fiberglass hull built by Roberts in 74. We have done extensive upgrades over the years like adding the tophouse, aluminum bulwarks, rigging, replacing bulkheads and the decks.

Hello, Are your beach seine openings and areas different than the limit seine ones? Not familiar with them as we don't have beach seiners here in Southeast. Nice to see fishermen selling their own catch. ADFG needs to make it easier for direct sales to local restaurants, grocery stores, and residents. Live in fish country and you can't get good fresh fish to eat! Take care.
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Douglas. I believe both beach and purse seine are treated the same. I don't recall any announcements that differentiated between them. There are only a few guys that beach seine here, we would see one in a bay every so often.
@rodneystorick64534 жыл бұрын
Does this get you better price on the fish if you do the offload yourself. Seems like a lot off work, than letting processing plant do. Or would you have to upload all that in the computer if you went to processing plant
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rodney. Great question. We do get a better price, because we are selling direct to the public. It is extra work, but it also allows us to remain a small fishing operation that is value based instead of relying on volume. The main difference is we retain ownership of our product (it is custom processed for us), as opposed to selling the fish to a processor and never seeing it or being involved in the distribution of it.
@fireguy754 жыл бұрын
love the content. went to order some and it was 125.00 just to ship it to NJ . then the price of the fish. i never had it before so its hard to pull the trigger on an order
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Thanks FireGuy! Most seafood retailers pad the price of shipping in the cost of the product. That's why it's common to see halibut at $25/ lb and up. Shipping is part of the cost and we prefer to sell our products at fair, reasonable prices and not hide shipping costs. Another thing to keep in mind is a large portion of halibut is frozen and carried over a year or more. If you ask your retailer where and when it was caught, who caught it and how the fish was cared for, you are unlikely to get an accurate answer. We are proud of the seafood we sell, and always strive to put out the best quality available.

Why are you weighing each fish instead a box full? Seems very slow process and labor intensive
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
We are getting the weights to grade the fish by size. Ex-vessel prices often go by splits, for halibut it is 10/20, 20/40 and 40 up. Each grade can have a different price. Also the process is pretty fast. It takes us about 45 minutes to weigh and tally 2000 pounds of halibut.
