Sorry for late response. I joined Phd at 30 and hence definitely recommend if you like doing research. PhD is not easy job and if you really love reserach you must join phd. the options available after - 1) Join Academia (IITs/NITs) 2) Join RnD Labs 3) Join Startups 4) Join State Govt colleges as lecturers

Sir consider a hypothetical scenario where a guy with relatively poor academic record (7 cgpa in btech and no prior research exp) manage to get under 200 rank in GATE CS and intend to do direct PhD (rejecting mtech) at IISc or IIT D/B.. Will he have a high chance of getting accepted even if he messes up the interview process (due to anxiety or something else)?

I suggest try gate one more year and have a better rank/score. So that you can ensure good IITs for PhD. With this score its diffcult to get top IITs Regarding SOP, its not that much important. Your Gate score and interview performance matters

Nah effect kuch nhi padega....both Mtech or PhD will give you exposure for data science. Only difference is time. Phd need 5-6 yrs, whereas Mtech will take 2 yrs

According to me, try to finish Phd by 31/32, then you will have time for postdoc and then can join any IITs by 35 without any hurry.

I was in same dilema in 2018, at the age of 27, whether to go for Mtech or direct PhD. See direct PhD has one biggest advantage here that it will save your 1-2 years. But if you have zero experience in Research, you might have struggle in initial few years of Phd. Now its your call. As you are starting late and sure about Phd, direct is better in terms of saving couple of years. You can join some research lab at IITs for 6 months to gain the research experience and then join PhD. This might help.

With job getting phd admission is difficult. You need to find an advisor who is ok with this. Also your company shouldn't have any issue with that. Then only it's possible.

Not much idea about phd at iit jodhpur, but in general it's similar to converting mtech to PhD. If you are still sure about phd go for direct one rather than integrated one to save time
