Hello, in the italian language when the reporting clause is before the direct speech, we use the colon ( : ) not the comma. Example: Mark said: " I am tired! " Please can you tell me when you use the colon in english? Thanks.
@CrownAcademyEnglish9 жыл бұрын
tere Sometimes in English, it is acceptable to use the colon also. You might see it used in some magazines, for example. But in strict written English, you should use the comma. Example, if it is for an academic exam or essay or formal report. Using the comma will always be correct in English. I hope that helps.Andrew

Hi Andrew. You voiced the elementary rules of grammar of direct speech. I told that your pronunciation the rhythm of reading are excellent for perception and comprehension. When i hear even the basic material i study to build sentence correctly due to for your comments. Thanks you again and again

@catrionaroberts80004 жыл бұрын
Where the direct speech is broken up into two parts, you have said that if the second part of direct speech is a new sentence, then we start it with a capital letter and keep the comma after the reporting clause. So, your example shows this: "I'm tired," she said, "Let's stay at home." Can I ask what style recommends this? New Hart's Rules (Oxford book of style) and English Grammar for Dummies - UK edition - shows that in this case there should be a full stop after the reporting clause, so: "I'm tired," she said. "Let's stay at home." Confused now which way is correct? Thanks

Thank you for this helpful lesson.Does the position of the 'reporting clause' play any important role in the sentence,Andrew?
@CrownAcademyEnglish9 жыл бұрын
nongphutre Hello and thanks for the comment and question. For simple reporting clauses like "said" or "replied" then they can go before or after the speech. For the others ("commented", "admitted" etc) it is better to write them after the speech. Best wishes, Andrew

Hi Andrew, in many grammar lesson I check similar rules in my lenguaje, Spanish, and is impossible not compare. I try to ignore it but I can't, in addition, my mind try to translate. What do you recommend for improve in my lessons? Thanks.
@CrownAcademyEnglish9 жыл бұрын
John Fredy Marin Montoya Hello, it's normal to do that when you start. It just needs practice to try to stop translating into your native language in your head. Often speaking with natives will help you with this or reading / listening more in English. As you see and hear the English rules being correctly used many times, you will start to automatically use them yourself. Good luck. Andrew
