Directional Ground Piercing & Pipe Bursting Unit UM-32 explained by Chief Design Engineer at MEMPEX

The Ground piercing technology (or Dry compaction), compared to Horizontal Directional Drilling, offers much less expensive machines, and allows to reduce the costs of works, as bentonite mixtures are not required, and the personnel expenses are lower. The technology is adapted for medium and short distances (up to 80 meters), especially in urban areas and in confined conditions, where large mobile units can hardly access or perform (basements, manholes, high utilities networks density).
The machine on the video is being prepared for shipment to a local client: a Belarusian medium-sized private construction company SPECTELECOMSTROY (спецстрой.бел/) which makes most of its business from laying telecommunication networks and from rental of construction equipment. The company has also in its fleet a large crawler-tracked US-made HDD machine, but it still purchases our small unit, as these two machines are complementary, and for numerous construction tasks the UM-32 is way more cost-effective.
The machine is simple, and it is its advantage. During ground piercing, it uses a straightforward lever, joining the frame and the axis, to insure the rotation of the piercing head. This kinematic configuration empowers the rotation, which is needed when it is necessary to change the direction of the piercing. On the 200 mm carriage stroke the rotation is 40 degrees.
The speed of the piercing usually depends on the nature of soils, but the productivity of this machine keeps surprising our clients, taking into consideration its size.
