Director's Album Analysis - The Rose - 'Definition of Ugly Is'

The Heal album indeed isn't just a collection of songs, it's The Rose's project to heal through music together with their fans. They actually asked their fans (Black Roses) to send them lifestories that they could use to write songs about for this album. To fully understand this project and the meaning behind the songs, it's best to watch their documentary called "The HEAL project". In episode 3 the band members meet up with the fan who's story inspired them to write "Definition of ugly is". The song "See-Saw" is about their bassist Jaehyeong dealing with depression. The documentary will make you understand how special these guys are and why their fans love them so much. I'm so happy that I will get to see them live in a few weeks!

I think the most important thing in this album is the creative process, this is an important detail, because some songs were written with their fans, especially this one, the guys visited the fan and talked to her about her feelings and, in fact, she said that she felt like a "black sheep" and that she felt lost in this world, so this gives a huge and solid base to the album, because it is a collaborative process with their fans, it is not just the rose, healing is about of everyone and for that reason I think people can identify with the album and the rose.

Woosung and Dojoon's voices complement each other so well in this song. People say Dojoon is amazing live.... of course Woosung's voice is unique. They will perform next month in Madrid, Spain. So close to me and I can't go 😭😭

Thank you for this reaction, Roscoe! I've watched performances of this song and this is the first time I'm just listening without the visuals, interesting because you tend to pay closer attention. Your observations and analysis are so much on point; but then the lyrics are self-revelatory. Totally agree, that instrumental ending is so raw, like a spewing out of the frustration that, at one time or another we have all felt because who has never had that experience of being the odd one out? I know you want to only react to the songs in the album right now, without digressing to the live performances but I hope that after you have done the album, that you will react to some live performances. In this hauntingly beautiful song, for example, Woosung sings the first a capella verse and Dojoon sings the ending a capella verse - their voices have such similarities and subtle differences, aren't we blessed that these amazingly talented men found each other and stayed together through all the adversity in their earlier years.

This is the song that brought me to The Rose. I'm so glad you listened all the way through then read the lyrics. It moved me so much without knowing what was being said. I read the rest of the lyrics and I was moved to tears. I love this band so much! Can't wait to watch all your videos of The Rose. Can't wait to see them again live. They are going places!!

The very first concert I'll attend in my life - The Rose on OVO Wembley! I'm flying from Romania especially for them and I can't wait! I fell in love with their music last summer. I can't even decide which song speaks the most to me.

I heard this for the first time last summer and it was exactly what I needed. 🥹 As someone who has been on a healing journey now in my 40’s and realizing I have been looking for belonging all along…. Hearing it’s ok-I really don’t belong…It’s alright… It really helped me free myself to just be and belong myself. I see the frustration in the song but I also see the hope and realization that what ppl may see as an “ugly duckling” is really someone beautiful and unique. ❤️

I'm really excited to see what you think about the rest of the album. The Rose has a four part docuseries called The Heal Project and it's about making the album. I recommend watching it too. I fell for them even more after seeing that.

Me knowing NOTHING about this group (but I will). So I have NO IDEA if there is a M/V for this song or not… And since I’m commenting BEFORE you read the lyrics, this could be so completely off base… But I literally visualized a M/V for it while I was listening. I see it as one lone person in front of an easel, making gentle, fluid monochromatic strokes (I don’t belong here…) but as the accompanying instruments come in the color and form is added to the art. The painting becomes Directional. Beautiful. Worthy. But the artist can’t see the talent within himself. Still nervous. In the background, slowly other artists come into view (possibly art class-ish or street art style). The artist continues to compare himself to others. But others are comparing themselves to him. When the internal monologue wins he violently scribbles over his efforts (no resolution). Then it could either be left open ended, or resolved by other artists intervening. Oh it could be so pretty.

This is a beautiful vision! This song does not have an MV, but it does have a Vevo live that is amazing, you feel the emotion flying off the screen. If you can find the live version from a 2023 concert, the last part is basically the lead singer shredding the guitar. It is so mind-blowing.

Dear Roscoe... Thank you so much for diving into this Album and song. I really appreciate it... I hope you'll dive into "She's in the rain" too... This album helped me get up from a downfall in my life... I lost a good friend to suicide and I also tried to do it in despair with my illness but was saved by a very good team of doctors. I found out about The Rose through the psychiatrist who treated me... Since then I have come back strong because I know I am not alone and lonely through this journey. I'm sure there are many people like me all over the world. Music heals the soul... Yes I believe that...💜 🌍✌️
