From 1978 to 81, this show was must see for most Black American households. By the late 1970's many of the black TV shows from the beginning of the decade were gone or winding down and The White Shadow comes along with a mostly Black cast, positive role models and a show that dealt with issues that we could relate to.

When Kevin Hooks started directing, I suddenly remembered where I'd first seen him: a movie called "J.T.," about a ghetto kid who blossoms while taking care of a sick cat. That was way back in 1969. So it's been a lifelong career for him.

I had that book! I remember it was illustrated with photos of him.

Hooks also portrayed the young son on the movie Sounder starring Cecily Tyson and Paul Winfield as his parents.

I salute everyone on The White Shadow. Great acting by everyone and Bruce Paltrow is surely missed. Gave everyone a chance. Miss Ken Howard and watch the show today, Jan 10, 2023 everyday and it makes me cry and laugh. Love the trivia stuff from behind the scenes. met Kevin Hooks once in 2015 or so in Pasadena near City Hall and he was the nicest guy ever. Love you all homies!!!

A high water mark in network TV..an intelligent, original (on network TV??!!) and high quality show that tackled topics unseen elsewhere on network TV, yet never lost its sense of humor. A rare mix of talented actors, directors, writers and anchored by the perfectly cast late, great Ken Howard. You won't see a show of this quality on network tv again soon...

Thomas Carter directed the pilot for Miami Vice and come up with the In the Air Tonight sequence that pretty much became the calling card for the show.

are they..? Thomas Carter shot Miami Vice pilot and Van Patton shot Sopranos..other than that...?
@MrsEwat2 ай бұрын
@@mary-vy3mo, yes, they are…don’t dismiss these guys, both whom have won several awards for directing. You mentioned Miami Vice-which was in the 80s, but everyone who’s a Thomas Carter fan knows him as the vehicle behind the movies Save The Last Dance and Coach Carter. He has also directed episodes of several tv shows over the years, including, most recently, The Resident and New Amsterdam. When his name pops up on something I’m watching I know it’s going to be good! As for Tim Van Patten, I remember him also directing The Wire, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and he was the Executive Producer of the revamped Perry Mason that was on HBO. And Kevin Hooks is no slouch either…he directed several films, and also directed episodes of the tv show Lost. He was also directed and produced several episodes of the show Prison Break.

My life is incomplete not having a third season dvd
@J_Ru313523 жыл бұрын
The Third Season of the series wasn't so great with only a few good episodes here and there leading up to the shows eventual cancellation, plus the new core of charcters for ball players to go with the popular holdovers didn't catch on after some of the originals transitioned graduating from school into the real world.

Yep, I read the ratings were good enough but a lot of bigot viewers weren't happy with the show being on forefront of racism and being a mostly Black cast. Sad

Great show.......but when you have a show about high school kids eventually they get older, graduate and have to move on..... that's why the show only lasted 3 years, even the third season lost something because a lot of the guys graduated....

Weird that Bruce Paltrow was better known as Gwyneth’s father, given his resumé.
