According to ND Stevenson, the medieval/sci fi aesthetic is representative of how while this society has advanced technologically, they're still stuck in the same, medieval mindset and prejudices. So it's a cool design choice and it serves the movie's themes.

Fun Fact: The credits for the film has an entire section dedicated to everyone that has worked at Blue Sky, complete with Nimona shapeshifting into a squirrel. A bittersweet, but great note to end on.

I love seeing movies that Disney rejected become successful. Nimona is living proof that there is potential to revive scrapped projects. That being said, I hope other studios take this movie's success into consideration and give their scrapped projects another chance.

I think the parts where Nimona says "I don’t know what’s scarier, the fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to drive a sword into my heart, or that sometimes, I just want to let them" was such a punch to the gut for me. It's hard and I’m so tired, but I’m still here. To everyone who also was affected by this, I see you. Stay safe, please, it will get better one day, I promise. And to those who want it or appreciate it, I’ll pray for you. ♡

First The Owl House and now Nimona. Disney truly can’t seem to understand a true masterpiece. But as long as society makes it seem like LGBTQ+ is unprofitable, the problem will only get worse. I love this movie. The representation is amazing. My favorite part is how they incorporate the shape shifting into the fighting.

What impressed me most about this film is how it presents the topic of cultural biases in such a real way. Ballister wants to believe that the system will work, save for a few bad apples. The 3rd act breakup of him doubting Nimona works incredibly well, because unlike other films, it doesn't feel forced. We understand why both Ballister and Goldenlion have grown up with this cultural conditioning, it's often hard to challenge your own worldview when all you've ever known are good guys and bad guys.

Nimona even says it herself, Ballister was brainwashed by the institute. Which is even sadder when you realize that he was set up to be an outsider from the beginning, he’s the only one wearing all black armour and the only one with a black sword, it’s even in flashbacks to his training on the news and on the poster of him as a child. He was raised to be a scapegoat

One thing I’ve noticed about the movie after watching it several times is how deeply ingrained violence is in their society. The cereal ad is just the most blatant example, there’s a second ad for a board game where kids try to kill monsters in the climax, the subway is in a place called vanquisher square, there’s a kid on a coin operated horse pretending to be Gloreth killing monsters and there’s likely more examples I’m forgetting. It’s all so casual in their world that no one cares that the knights are trained to dismember people first and ask questions later.

She trying to end her life was way more powerful than a battle whit Ambrosius. When you realize she didn't came back to destroy the city, but herself.. One of the most intense scenes in animation. Ever. Add to the fact the end credits even gave a help line afterwards.

Regarding the point about Spider-Punk - Hobie's anti-establishment tendencies DO further the plot, at least from where I sit. Considering he pushes Miles to question everything in the Spider-Society, and even has his own plan running in the background, I think there's a lot more nuance there than just "lmao punk is funny" That said, yeah, Nimona captures that vibe a LOT better than SpiderVerse. Loved the entire movie!

I never saw Hobie as a clown. He subverts the Spider Society and its fascism. If Gus is referring to Hobie's hair...damn. It's Black hair. It's just not right to belittle Black hair. If that's not the reason why, I would like to have more detailed information regarding why Hobie is "a clown."

Annapurna definitely did Blue Sky justice. I'm so glad this film got a second chance and had so many thought provoking messages. Big metaphors/analogies to fearmongering and propaganda against minorities, using fear to control, the victors writing the history books, use of excessive force, maintaining tradition/the status quo at all costs, gaslighting, and hiding the parts of yourself that aren’t "normal" enough for others' comfort, among others. It’s pretty spectacular.

Had a thought about this: There's a recurring thing in fantasy where you have an ancient order that in the Glory Days of Old was a bulwark and protector against the dangerous threats of the outside world, but in These Fallen Days its mission is forgotten or dismissed and it's now a shallow version of its former self that's inadequate when the ancient evil returns to destroy us all. (The Night's Watch probably the most prominent recent example.) In Nimona, the ancient order was never protecting against a real thing but an entrenched ruling class has used the stoking of fear and the promise of safety to ensure its position as wealthy and socially empowered overclass because surely, SURELY we wouldn't give so much money and power to the Knights if they weren't keeping us all safe.

I'm glad Disney didn't finish Nimona because then Ballister and Ambrosius wouldn't have gotten the relationship they deserve and they definitely would have toned down Nimona herself. Nimona was a massive W, in spite of the awful production troubles it went through.
@BaobhanloreArt

In defense of Hobie in ATSV, the movie is a two parter and we're not 100% sure where it's going but it seems to be a pretty anti establishment one. It's already taking an anti cop stance, and towards the end of the movie Hobie became a really prominent ally and friend. He stole equipment from the Spider Society, presumably to give to Miles but then gave it to Gwen so she could rebel with him. It may initially have been a joke, but he's starting to be taken more seriously as the story goes on and similarly Nimona had her violent fantasies as a joke before her beliefs were fully understood.

I like Nimona as a character because although there's probably a strong queer reading of the character, as an autistic cis person with traits of ADHD, the bit where she talks about not being able to shapeshift feeling like an itch is very reminiscent of why I spent so much time doing verbal and somatic stims, why even at the age of 23 I still play with my vocal range and jump around and clap my hands when I'm happy. They're what comes naturally and I like doing it.

As an ADHD person I strongly agree. Nimona is such a great character that embodies every non-normative experience. When I watched that scene I said to myself “YES! People always ask me why do I do weird neurodivergent stuff and don’t realise that this is who I am”. Masking is such a depressing thing to do, It’s like being a closeted queer person, but with neurodivergence. I experienced both in some capacity because, despite being cis and mostly hetero male, I am nonbinary and my “feminine” mannerisms freak out conservative people around me. I am from Russia, so 80% of the population is aggressively conservative to the point of actively denying that ADHD and nonbinary identity even exist (so, denying the core parts of my mind that I can’t change).

Disagree on the spiderpunk take. He wasn't just played for laughs, he did challenge the 'institute' (spider society, miguel mostly) as he made his own watch, and the third act will most certainly be about that, challenging miguel.

I think that in my perception of hobie brown is that it is played for laughs but also not treated like “oh isn’t he crazy?!”. I think it’s kind of a dry humor where the joke is that he’s being really blunt
@Miles_Phantasmagoria

I think there is a bigger reason as to why Hobie’s punk beliefs are initially played for laughs, but I agree with you fully. The fact that people can take away that he’s a farcical character (whereas the comedy seems to be more of a mask that he wears) is a bit troubling, given how being anti-establishment is seen as a trend at best irl, and I hope that the next movie shows his complexity more explicitly. That said, LOVE that Nimona is all in on that mentality of questioning and opposing rigid social structures

Highly recommend Schnee's video on Hobie because you see a great view on Spiderpunk and how he wasn't actually playing it as a joke but actually as a facade to his true self and keeping distance to the spider society but also still being there and one of the deepest characters with almost no screen time. Highly recommned!

Love this all around. Think you're being a little unfair to Hobbie/ Spider-Punk, because yeah they do play his anti-establishment thing as a joke but also (spoilers I guess) he winds up completely vindicated and he winds up being the guy who gives Miles and Gwen the thing they need when it seems hopeless.

Towards the end where we realize where Nimona is so determined to get to is the statue of glorith, hits just as hard as it does the first time. Nimona wants to go out to the same thing that made her TRUELY feel like she doesn’t belong. Glorith’s sword. The sword of the first friend she ever had. The first sword to be turned on her.

I really enjoyed the movie and what it tried to do. My biggest critisism of this movie however is the pacing, its so fast to the point where most of my Family missed the point of it all and thought it was "Okay". Even in this review I noticed a lot more here than I did watching the movie. And one other thing as well, I didnt at all relate this to real life and tearing down tradition since that has already happened way before I was born. This may be more applicable to Africa, parts of Asia and the Middle east becuase those countries are still trying to rise up and have their voices spoken. (My hearts go out to you, and the many people who lost their lives trying to be different.) I loved Nimona, and simply cant wait for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie as well. I one of the guys who despised the kiss in lightyear. And I LOOOVED Nimona. You really don't understand one second what you're talking about. Guy's you completely missed what it's all about, the big difference here 1- FORCED to check a DEI box like Disney, so forced it jumps in your face or 2- NATURAL so natural you're brain barely remarks it's there like Nimona. The fact you're hoping your political enemy's get's aneurisms is why Hollywood is dying, people will loose their jobs, and the whole industry will disappear. Instead of being escapism, it became politics. And the people who want's escapism (90% of the audience) will go watch other stuff. Hollywood will die, and then ask "What happened" because they never took 1 sec to analyze what they where doing wrong. Political messaging "feels" it's always right, it's truly a cult, and you cannot explain anything to a cult. It will have to financially die, sadly.

He doesn't think the Director is a good guy and didn't kill the queen, but he's also doubting Nimona's reasons for helping him, because everything he's been told leads him to believe that Glorith's monster was evil and he's just found out it was her.
