+Paul Frederick that's okay I use tool. I don't collect them.
@1pcfred9 жыл бұрын
jimmydiresta That was what I figured. I'm the same way with a lot of used tools I fix up myself. Still, it never hurts to use the more gentle processes. That draw knife did not look really pitted to me. It just had the bright orange powder rust going on by the looks of it. Vinegar can usually defeat that. Put the tub out in the hot sun for a power boost.
@pestr9999 жыл бұрын
After he sanded it , the metal surface still had discolorations so I think it was already starting to pit. I'll try the vinegar for a few of my older knives I found in bad condition. Paul Frederick

pestr999 I have done electrolytic rust removal too. But vinegar is almost as effective, and a lot easier. i.imgur.com/oAUodS2.jpg

My all time favorite handtool. I'll probably end up subscribing because of it. I like to use 3 or 4 different knives on any given project. Lots of projects won't tolerate discoloration from patina on the tool. When I'm 20 hours into an expensive stave I don't want to re-tiller or take another layer off the back to get a stain out.

Hey Jimmy, great video as always. My only suggestion would be to watch how much sanding and grinding you do on the blade at one time, and to make sure it stays cool. If it gets too hot to touch you're getting to the point your effecting the temper of the blade, making it softer and thus dull quicker during use.
@VikingShorts9 жыл бұрын

Great job! One suggestion: If you want to fit the handles without epoxy, just drill a hole slightly smaller than you need them to be, heat up the handle of the blade until red hot and push the wood handles on. This way you fit them perfectly by burning them in and it wont come off any time soon! :)

Hey jimmy! Great vid fella, just though I would leave you a little tip. Always have a bucket of water placed just below the grinder 1 it will catch a lot of the fine dust generated by the grinder and 2 you need to keep the steel cool so you don't ruin the original temper of the steel! Not being a troll just thought it would help🤓👍 all the best sandy

That trick you used to drill a straight hole through the handles: I use the same one, but I started using it because I've only got one eye and no depth perception. I've still drilled a lot of crooked holes, but far fewer since I learned this trick Now if I could just stop burning my fingers with the soldering iron. (They're numb. It's a surprise every time.!
