That is some true respect for the tree shown here. No finish. Harvested dead. Beautiful.

I dont understand how 100 people could have disliked this. Whats not to like about using a rotten stump and log to make a breath taking Cedar Shelf? Awesome build Jimmy.

Several years ago while working at a cabinet shop we built the cabinets for several custom RV units (1/2 horse trailer, 1/2 5th wheel RV trailer) out of red cedar. The shop smelled wonderful for weeks! Can't say I was a fan of the look of an all red cedar kitchen but they sure did have a nice look to them. Very east wood to work with, if a bit soft. Extra care was needed to prevent denting the wood or over sanding.

I came across some of this wood, I made a few boxes out of it. I also took some small scrap pieces and made a ceder oil out of it. I mixed the shaving with Grapeseed oil and let it sit in a mason jar together over very low heat in a water filled pot for about 6 hours. Then strained out all the particles till I was left with just the oil. The oil pulled the smell and color from the wood. I put most of the oil into small vials but I also had some left over. I used some to oil a few small chunks of the cedar I used as holders for the vials, the smell was not concealed, anything else you would use most likely would, but the smell and grain came out great with this oil that came from the tree.

Just watched the Samurai Carpenter do the router planner jig.... Must build one now... Beautiful shelf! nice thing about leaving it without a finish is it can be sanded every so often and the smell comes back strong again.

That's an absolute inspiration. We don't have cedar here in Idaho, but I'm going to find a nice downed fir or pine next time I'm out in the trees and do that.

I agree with many other viewers, Jimmy. Your voiceovers are great, keep them coming! (This from a former announcer at a 50,000 watt clear channel radio station). BTW, I didn't review, but I think you drilled into that concrete block wall with a hammer drill. If you don't own a "rotary hammer", you would love it --- a world of EASY drilling into masonry! No comparison. When you get the yellow/black one, paint it white. Haha

Nice job! For what it's worth, it's a Juniper also called Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana). The color will become more tan with age, and the smell will fade, but still a magnificent shelf. I'll be using your mounting technique for a fireplace mantel I'm making.

Juniperus virginiana - not a cedar at all, but a juniper. However, as with most aromatic trees, it is called "cedar", in this case, Eastern red cedar. Western red cedar does not grow around here. Deodar cedar, a true cedar, is planted as an ornamental tree. You can also find Atlantic white cypress, which is called "White cedar". It is a cypress.
