DiResta: VacForm Mask

In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
Vacuum forming is the perfect technique to make repetitive objects-like a Halloween mask!
In this video you see a technique I use with my students. I give the assignment to create a mask form for the Vac Former. To make it durable and strong I use plaster and to keep the sculpt fluid and natural I use a soft clay. When using a negative mold as you see here in this video, you will always get a perfect form each time. You can see that I use a thin styrene to show the fine details in the plaster that originated in the soft clay.

another added advantage of pulling into a negative mold is you get a lot more detail in the plastic. pulling over a positive rounds over a lot of the detail

I made a vacuum former recently. Pretty easy to make with some mdf and a hoover. I used the kids toy batman and spiderman to make choc/ice molds. Works sweet as!

FYI, you can smooth out your water-based clay with a damp sponge. If you're using oil-based clay, like a polymer, then you can use rubbing alcohol and a soft paint brush.

You should maybe mention its a good idea to wear gloves when mixing the plaster by hand due to the hydration process and the damage it can cause to your skin.

Using the negative means that the styrene will take the shape of all the little details he sculpted onto the clay on the front area of the mask and be smooth on the other side. If he had made a positif one out of plaster and then vac formed, the front part of the styrene would have been smooth with not small details and the back loaded with details, which is useless.
