My DiResta GIANT Razors… Now LIVE HERE: imakeny.com/pr...
My DiResta Razor Shirt : rlnk.cc/the-di...
In this project video I document the raising of a barn frame on my property! This traditional post and beam horse barn was designed by Taylor Forrest and Built by Brett Pulliam. The foundation was install last year (August 2020) with intentions of us doing the frame with our maker friends, but with the world being what it is, and a busy year, we decided to hire a professional to cut and erect the frame... and we are very happy we did!
Thank you Brett! In the upcoming year we will document the roof and closing in of the barn. It will be used for up to 4 horses and an apartment. thank you ! xo

Looking at the structure of the barn, i can see why he's word of mouth, and rather private, in comparison with other barn builders. You wouldn't want to be out there too much, and you want to have the opportunity to choose your work. It's a lovely looking traditional barn. It would be at home back 40 years or more just fine. :) With proper care, i don't see any reason it wouldn't last many, many years into the future.

@ I don’t know much about the fine details of architecture, plumbing, or anything near what the kind of ground work and planning a project like this would take. But. I do know what it’s like to pour your heart and soul, your brain, sweat, and tears into an idea and dream that you believe in and seeing it come to life. I am a mechanic and an artist myself, for over 10 years, and this is wholly impressive and sensational work. Your content and art is incredible, and it’s clear you poured yourself into this barn and worked your tail off through the process. This kind of result and vision doesn’t come from just any average mind, this comes from a passionate artist and hard worker. Hats off to you and the whole crew, your barn is stunning!

They're actually really affordable if you build them yourself. I've actually built one like this, but it was with metal beams-- different look, but still very similar feel-- and they spray-foamed the walls after and one of the last days we were there, with a foot of snow on the ground outside--- we worked inside and it was still warm inside; with no heater running or anything.. they even had radiator floors, but it wasn't even hooked up yet.... My point is, if you use spray foam insulation, it's just like a giant igloo ice chest. It's so unbelievably efficient.

Man does this look familiar! It is like a 100 year newer version of my This Old Barn Shop barn. Supply House and Uponor was what I used for my radiant heat as well. My Barn was slightly bigger though at 40x60. I can still remember cutting the mortises for the outer wall posts I had to replace which were 6x6 x16ft oak and were pretty fun to place as one guy by hand! Only drawback I see to timber frame is if you need to replace a piece you really can't because of it all being interlocked. That means it is critically important to keep it all dry and protected. I am going to have to do some sill replacement on my 1830's house becasue some dummy 100 years ago poured concrete up against it and it has rotted. Being that it is a hybrid timber and baloon frame structure it could get real interesting! Nothing to it but to do it. :-)

Looks really good. I did a course here in Sweden with Jack Sobon and Neil Godden. They are from the states and Jack was one of the people that were instrumental to revive the timber frame technique in the states. It was really interesting and I learned so much. They basically used all hand tools and no fasteners besides wooden pegs. Though there are some things that I feel might be different to what we learned. The pegs should all be drawbored so it pulls in the joints really tight. The rafters should also be seated into the plates (the long beams with scarf joints.) with a building as large as this it might not be that much of an issue though. We only did a 48' x 22' building so it might be less important when there is so much weight as you have. Really enjoyed watching this go up. Looking forward to the day I can raise my own barn like this.
@tyfe
@tyfe 2 жыл бұрын
Wonderful build and skills. Although I agree about the pegs - what a surprise! all the effort and time to design, cut and raise the barn, but at the last hurdle, no draw-bored pegs!! The timber will dry over the years and everything will become loose with no option to tighten up - as you would be able to with tapered pegs + draw-bored joints. We're all here to learn, but the draw-bored peg system is often over looked, which is nail biting as it is a fundamental element to a long lasting frame. A technique that has been tried and tested throughout history of timber framing.

I noticed that Brett didn't "draw bore" the peg holes in the opening couple of minutes. Did you discuss this with him, why he doesn't draw bore? I know that wind braces should really only be loaded in compression, and that they theoretically don't need to be pegged, so I can see just boring those through at assembly. However, at 2:15 he's not augering for a brace. I'm not picking nits with Brett's approach. I'm just trying to gather info from practitioners with experience, since I aim to build a garage/shop this summer, with queen posts for standing attic space - very similar frame layout to what you have here. The lean to addition to saltbox it may need to wait until next season, but it sure will be nice to have a long bay to store our little camper and for a "project vehicle" to sit in over the winter. Beautiful project!

An air b&b and a chance to learn a bit from Jimmy? (of coarse free labor). Not that my life would allow it. This pandemic has challenged the root of me as an ICU nurse. I don't even think I'm creative anymore.

Strikes me as a vastly overbuilt sturcture, is it a "show piece". Somebody's got a lot of money. I love wooden beam buildings, but most of us can't afford the weath on display. The horses are going to be happy and well housed.

Architects are needed but if they do not have experience in the type of project you need. You are better off with a designer for a conception drawing and relying on the experienced contractor to design build. All will be much happier in the end

Damn at two mins the concerns about being responsible for Covid transmission evidently does not extend to employees just their friends. I dislike these people. Clicking off.
