Lyrics in English As its the case in most Somali songs, the lyrics of this song initially was a poem dictated by a Somali poet. The target audience of the poet seems to be the Somali youth of the 80s, who started to leave country in droves for greener pastures Overseas.Without explicitly using the word youth he instead uses DURBAAN Somali word for drum. Its obvious why he would choose a drum to represent the youth because both are vibrant, energetic and intrigueing. And without offending them by lecturing them directly he speaks with them subconsciously. Due to my poor English, I am unable to capture every little detail in meaning nevertheless I depicted a rough image in English. Keep reverberating Keep resonating Keep echoing through the valley Keep reverberating Call those absent Oh! Drum! The people are dark in complexion Oh! Drum! Yearn for your heritage Oh! Drum! You are indeed a soothing for both ladies and gentlemen Oh! Drum! Never cease reverberating Oh! Drum the country is lush Oh! Drum! The rivers are streaming Oh! Drum! The sky is cloudy Oh! Drum! It's indeed Allah's blessing Oh! Drum! Never cease reverberating Oh! Drum! The life stock is grazing Oh! Drum! The dairy animals droped their new borns. Oh! Drum! All kinds of crops are flourishing Oh! Drum! Lead the way for our common good.

This this was tradionally kick start for a dance called haan. In country nomadic youth would sett dancing camp at nught and they would start with song to signal to from scattered near by settlement to join the dance.. hence why she is telling the drun to reverberate through the valley and call absent folks

When they were dressed like this they had religion too! For hundreds and hundreds of years they were Muslim and dressed like this. No issues. Every single Muslim country had no issues culture + religion went hand in hand. But the change started happening from the 40s onwards in Somali lands with huge number of Somalis living and working in British Colonial Yemen. Aden was said to have had 100,000 Somalis alone! They started changing their music and how they dress even changed from what you see here to what many say is our cultural dress the 'diric' and 'garbasaar' and 'ma'awiz' which is really Southern Yemeni dress and from the 70s onwards there was an even major shift that swept all around the Muslim world with cultural dress of women and to some extent men as well as other cultural expression like music etc being cosigned to history. So it is not religion per se but rather colonialism as well as this new interpretation of Islam that swept the Muslim world post 70s/80s onwards.

The mix of nostalgia, ecstasy tinged with pain of knowing what we lost. someone asked what it meant. roughly this: Oh drum echo in the Deep Valleys; call the missing to the feast; The Rivers are flowing; the rains coming; the Oh Drum Never fall silent.

Look how beautiful somalis were- now the women are forced to dress in tents and sweep the streets with it, I kid you not, I saw a Somali women wearing one of those jilbaab, part of it was dragging on the ground behind her, not even sanitary. You can dress modestly without donning a tent.
