This is actually really interesting to see how two fairly different games handle similar content. While DR2 definitely has the advantage with its larger focus on and experience with rallying and rally cross, this was a pretty good attempt by Polyphony at adding more variety to GT7.

It's interesting the difference in physics between the two games, in Dirt Rally, they obviously made it so the weight transfer of the car is more cartoony and arcady, not affecting the cars capacity to break into a drift, they also made it so that the tire compounds are not very grippy and when the car looses grip, it is more eager to angle or drift whereas in gran turismo, if your car loses grip - your suspension tuning and tire compound will significantly determine what the result of that will be. In gran turismo, since its a semi-sim, the back and front tires are equal in grip and the only way to get any degree of similar car behaviour between the two games is to significantly reduce body roll with anti-roll bars in the case of gt7, otherwise the weight-transfer inhibits the ability to throw the car around since it will just gain grip as it throws the energy back into the suspensions. Making a car handle like a dirt rally car in GT7 would be quite a cool achievement actually, an issue with most sim games is that when the car experiences grip loss (starts to skid) you lose all your grip strength as well, due to the way games are coded, they basically code grip strength and grip loss differently, grip strength is a universal value which determines the speed at which a car can turn, whereas grip loss is how much grip the tires loose during turning - they are completely different values and can change how a car handles dramatically. For example, if grip strength is really high and grip loss is a low value (as is the case in dirt rally), this allows that satisfying fast skidding/drifting action even on tarmac, in simulators like gran turismo, usually the grip strength and grip loss are somewhat equal across the board, making it really difficult to skid grippy tire compounds and far too easy to skid drifty tire compounds. Sorry for the rant, just some observations i made when i was working with Grand Theft Auto code and examining how they designed their model, its surprising that most games follow this metric.

allright, im not getting into whats a sim and what isnt a sim. but an easy comparison to make is to look at the real rallycross cars driving at the real catalunia rallycross track. they slide everywhere and the way they drive is a lot more similar to dirt rally 2. If anything, GT7 is too stiff and too grippy. but dont take my word for it, look up "World RX - 2018 Rallycross of Barcelona Final" you will see what i mean.

@@kaozer666 Well, no, if you actually watched any World RX race you will notice it's way different in Dirt Rally. Although it's much better than GT7, which is never good at offroad physics, Dirt Rally is still very much unrealistic compared to real World RX. Most people don't know much about the physics because there are too little information about it. Real cars sliding everywhere doesn't mean Dirt Rally is realistic, even they all slide, they slide very differently. The cars in DR has very little cornering grip but a lot sliding grip, basically if you want grip cornering your car will slide, but when you sliding the cars accelerate very fast and they regain grip very fast. In reality cars will wheelspin a lot more and regain grip much slower, sliding is a tech to straighten cars out corner, it's nowhere as fast as in DR and they will grip if they can grip. I will give you a very simple example, the track record of Holjes is 41.7s with Johan's Polo Supercar, where in Drit Rally you can run 41.7 with RX2. RX1 in Dirt Rally is about 37-38s. Also Yas Marina hairpin, 90% of real drivers will grip and AI in DR will grip, but grip is much slower than drift in DR. Believe or not, actually the most realistic rallycross sim could be BeamNG.

Yup cars in gt7 needs to be grittier, don't get me wrong i love all the accurate modeling that they've done, but it kinda lacks the imperfections that every real car has, whether it's dirt, mud, rainwater stains, or even tiny scratches that you get from wiping your car with the wrong cloth. And i believe this is an easy fix for pd i mean they already got their dirt and scratches overlay texture for every car, they just need to amp it up and make it a lot more visible during races

Dirt rally 2 literally destroys GT7... But it's obviously why. This was the main project for dirt rally 2 while rallycross layout and map is literally a side project... A ' fan project' by the devs at polyphony. Cars are too loose... Barely any grip and when sliding them it's like on ice not gravel... No directional control at all. But at the very least... It's a good start. If they wanted they could tweak the simulation engine and improve upon it dramatically before implementing more rallyX tracks and make it another official match maker for driving. Which would be awesome.

Fun fact: This is Gran Turismo’s first real-life rally track since, I think, the Grand Canyon in GT4. I really hope this is the path to having more real rally tracks because we can all agree it’s GT’s weakest offering. DiRT wins on this one, for sure. GT7's biggest flaw are the non-tarmac tracks. For some reason they never feel that great to play on. I have a feeling that the physics engine and the way they've modelled the cars just aren't that great for rallying. I love GT7 and have always stayed away from their dirt tracks thinking i just suck at Rallying, but when i fired up Dirt Rally 2.0 i find my self loving the experience there. Its a "horses for courses" situation. If i wanna do a track race, its GT7, if it wanna fang it around the dirt, its Dirt Rally 2.0

In GT 7 the behind camera is really bad. It looks like the camera is stuck in the car's butt giving you the impression that everything else is moving except the car. I get dizzy watching it. Also the engine doesn't sound great.

GT7 one sucks here imo. Only redeeming quality would racing on asphalt. Track looks much smaller compared to Dirt 2. The camera is too stiff, cars look and probably feel very rigid as well, and on top of that the UI looks very awkward compared to Dirt's UI.

the outside view camera really shows that GT in general just doesn't do a good job of showing oversteer. The physics engine also seems to punish you severely for any loss of grip at all. you can literally see the car bog down at the slightest bit of angle.

everything BoP can't oversteer unless you really mess with assists. Idk y, but ABS makes the car unstable even when not braking. TCS off with weak ABS and the car understeers insanely. Max TCS and no ABS and you spin going in a line without braking. Maybe it's just me, but I always figured ABS would just stop over rotating with braking, not anything else.

God dammit lol. as a console gamer with a ddpro, I want to say the gorgeous gt7 is just as good as dr2. but it really isnt. such a shame. dr2 on a mega pc at super ultra settings looks great and all, but im stuck with the ps4 version. I will always wait for Gran turismo 2 remaster on today's graphic...nowdays graphical is good but gameplay is awful.
