Yamaha came to market with an off road racing dirt bike that fills a large gas in their lineup. This is a bike that can be ridden in off road, GNCC style situations. It can be ridden in hare scramble races. It can do desert, it can do single track. It might not even be terrible on a motorcross track for most average riders out there. Yes, it's a bit heavier than some of the other bikes in it's class due to the e-start, but it's a solid platform and it has been very fun to test over the past few months.

I LOVE my 16 250FX...coming from an 02 CR250 setup for woods, the blue bike is much more refined. More stable at speed, corners better, sounds awesome, coil and oil up front!!! Wouldn't mind it losing a few pounds but it's really easy to maneuver in tight gnar....twist it to the stop!!!

Friend of mine rode a WR with some FX modifications to 18th in the Bronze class at the Roof of Africa last year. Some hot tips for our local Yamaha gurus are to use exhaust wrap on the header to keep the heat in the pipe and away from the radiators etc. The other mod that makes a big difference is to lower the rear end 10mm (internal lowering with spacers), which apparently helps improve turning and stability significantly

Spot on, even for us wr owners (with competiton kit). After a G2 throttle tamer, 3 gallon tank, FMF exhaust I'm very happy with my bike. I hope to find a 250 KTM to borrow soon for comparison, honestly, they look more fun ergonomically than the Yamaha's - lower and leaner.

Thanks for a great review, I've been following this series closely for months now :) I finally rode the FX myself last weekend, at my local closed circuit enduro track and agree strongly with most of those points - particularly the hard to access fuel tank and the low gearing. I currently ride the KTM 250 xcf-w and the gearing on the FX was even lower, which made it a lot harder to ride smoothly and as a result tired me out a lot quicker. I must say I did find the suspension years ahead of the KTM. Both my KTM and the FX I tested were set up by the same suspension expert, for the exact same weight and very similar riding styles so it was a very fair comparison. Ultimately I found the FX suspension to be far firmer and smoother throughout the stroke and was far more confidence inspiring. Thanks again for this series, look forward to the next instalment.

I was picking up my 06 YZ250F head from a local bike shop Mossy creek cycle after it melted down lol, but they are both hare scramblers with the local AHSCS and had picked a new one up for his son's new race bike! WoW you're going to dig it the most, it is way different than the FX, gear box is totally different than the FX as well, no E start, bike is crazy quick though, get one..... you'll love it!

Hey Kyle, I have a 2015 WR250F (aus version is very similar to the FX once de-restricted, they come with the "competition kit") - currently thinking of trading it for a Beta 300 RR - Which would you prefer ? I had the same nit picks as yourself - the plastic fit is terrible compared to the older model (Airbox, how the fuel tank lines up and the exposed wiring. Annoys me for the cost of these!) and that werid "lurchyness" you describe is there as well. I think it must just run a bit leaner right off idle then it should. Using the clutch solves it or just having a slightly higher idle makes it not too bad....still annoying though! I like to ride the bottom end of the rpm range and just "cruise" through the trails so not sure if the Beta 300RR would be a good choice or not. What do you think mate?
@racerx9223
@racerx9223 5 жыл бұрын
Clutch control man, gotta keep it covered in any "loose or hairy" situation. Love the peppiness of it!!! Mitigate translation to the ground with the clutch, that's what it's there for but other than that and a couple small things it's hard to complain about isn't it? You need to do a build on this man, oddball stuff like port and polish, things like that would be awesome to see with or without dyno before and after hp ratings and tq.. I'd love a 150xcw to build for woods riding, eating people up on the local trails on the pipe alot kinda riding, sadly I only have a $1500 budget right now and will likely have to sell in the spring to buy more equipment or a trailer for the business I'm trying to get going doing landscaping, I'm tired of earning someone else's living too and want a chance to treat employees the way I would have liked and giving opportunity to own their share of the business and get percentage based income if they choose, to empower them to want to produce more and have high standards.. I hope this works.. 😕

Thanks for the information on these bikes. it's slightly off topic but would you consider this Yamaha to feel more heavy and planted than even the 350 XC you been riding lately? I know you're riding and testing the 350 and the new KTM's supposed to feel really light and lively. I'm sure you want to get into that and another video, but I'm very close to making a decision on a bike and it would help me out quite a bit. Thanks

I owned this bike and you cant go wrong with the fun factor of the 250fx . This bike will make you a better rider as the motor never abuses the rider but rips if you want, it is stable at speed , jumps well , the suspension is great and is super reliable, it turns great if you spend some time with setup and in a particular riding area. It is a little awkward in really tight trails compared to a 2 stroke.I would ride this in smooth flowing trails and fast single track also good on mild old school motocross tracks. This is a great bike for a racer or weekend warrior. New bike is a 2018 Husky tx300 and still love everything about Yamaha.

These bikes actually do get great mileage and also is it actually that much of a bother to open the filler cap? I did wonder about the gas tank when I first got it but haven't gotten low on gas at all. Also, you can grab the sub frame for putting on the stand.

Would you say it's a comfortable bike to ride on tight single tracks in the woods? Also the same question for YZ250X. I heard that KTM 250XCF since 2014 or so don't have much of a bottom end to speak of. Is it the same for YZ250FX?

Not looking to go fast but to go trough the type of terrain you ride without the extreme sections, not that aggressive or at least not at the beginning but consistence. Would rather fuel injection and electric start, 2 or 4 stroke don't care, New or used don't care. Any suggestion?

Great video... I'd love to hear your thoughts about the WR250F with the ECU competition programing kit compared to the YZ250FX. Are they effectively the same bike? If i get a great deal on a new 2015 WR, is it worth it?
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 7 жыл бұрын
The WR has is a tamed down, plugged up, lower HP version of the YX250FX. The WR is a great bike, but it's more of a trail bike. It feels sluggish and soft as compared to the YZ250FX IMO. I have not been on a WR with the competition ECU that you are referring to. The YZ250FX is a race bike and behaves like one.

I sold this bike a few months ago. Mileage is trail and rider dependent for sure. It's not like a car where you can give an actual mileage since the terrain and the riders aggressiveness (or lack there of) makes a huge difference.

Do you think something like the G2 throttle tamer would help with the off-idle "lurchiness"?
@jeffloucks2120
@jeffloucks2120 6 жыл бұрын
wetfloorsign I bought one used and expected the lurchiness and it for sure was scary in tight woods. Turns out it had a G2 throttle tube with quick turn cam. Ordered up the "tamer" cam and swapped it out with great results. It's still got that clean off/on but you've got a lot of room to be more liberal with the throttle. As I get more used to the bike I may work back towards the stock cam profile but for now this is working wonders.

It's not recommended but that's just how I prefer it now, and in Hawaii when we're trail riding having that plastic gone helps for when we are on a rocky river beds and you need to carry the rear over the rocks sometimes

Kyle would the YZ 250 FX be an good match for general trail riding for a moderate skilled rider? Or would the WR 250 F provide similar power and handling? I like having some lights on the bike but if the WR250F is slower, I wondering if I'll get bored with it. I'm an older rider in my 50s so I don't plan to race but I do like having enough power to crawl up hills in the mountains here in New Mexico. Hi Kyle, can you comment on the wide ratio 6 speed transmission ? For those of us that like an mx-like bike for dual sporting ... and before you cringe let me explain - My concern is getting to close by trails not actual dedicated road riding. Most of my riding starts right from my garage not from my truck so this is important. I had a crf250x and with a 5 speed it had to be darn near neutered gearing-wise to get a decent cruising/not screaming pace (55mph). Again I know this is a race bike but a lot of us convert them for more fun while enjoying technical trail riding. (us 40+ ex-racers). How does the tranny compare to an XCF-W speed, did Yami get the 6 speed right ?
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the gearing for speed/transitions was really good. This bike did great in 6th gear. The KTM 250 XC-F couldn't pull 6th gear.

I did have a chance to ride his XC-F, I did find it to vibrate through the foot pegs causing my feet to become fatigued fairly quick. Maybe it's my cheaper thor boots? I'm not to sure, but something maybe something to look into while you're riding it. Anyway ride safe and have fun!

I'm 13 and on a yz250f which is a motocross race bike and ride it off road the fx which I've ridden is like the f but intended for trails and includes electric start. The wr series is like the fx but feels a little more less powerful.

This bike or a WR 250 would be a decent first bike depending on your height and weight.

WR is the detuned version of the FX.$100 will get you the competition kit for the WR that makes it pretty much a FX. Add a new pipe to make it event better.

Motorcycle dealer should send him some bikes for review, for now he have to buy each bike himself, he cannot review a new bike each week! I bought my KTM because of this channel, i'ts good free publicity for dealers!

+cadwarrior Exactly...I also bought my bike based on the influence of this channel. Actually dirt bike channel is pretty much the reason I started riding enduro. Lol. In Canada Beta has shipped demo bikes basically across the country stopping at dealers along the way. Perhaps it's simular in the states, and Beta would entertain the idea of dropping a demo bike of at Dirt Bike Channel. A big if..but worth a shot I suppose. This channel is one of the few locations to find unbiased, honest reviews by an everyday rider, making it an awesome resource.

personal i think the cable clutch is a good thing as it dosnt give me as many problems with hidralycs and so on. also, if you take the older moddels like my own ktm 2012 model has hidralyc clutch, and the new ones has hidralyc clutch

What’s the maintenance on the 250fx like. I don’t want to get the normal f because of the maintenance. Is it as much as this bike?

Snickers I own one, it's about the same I think. Oil changes every 5 hours and an oil filter change every 10. Initial break in means getting valve clearances checked etc but other than that, you don't need much. Especially if you don't flog the shit out of it.

Conor Mcmullen yea I mean I’m sure I would go to tracks but probably not race, do you think that 120 hours is when it needs a new top/ bottem end or would you say that’s to soon

Hey I’m about to buy a ‘16 yz250fx. This will be my first full size dirt bike. I’m wondering if this will be a lot of bike for me or if it will be good to continue to learn on and grow my riding skills and experience. I know how to ride, just most of my riding experience is on the street versus off-road. Any thoughts? Thank you.

From 3 years ago reading comments, if you bought the FX, you have probably raised you skills immensely with it. I just now bought a 16 250FX and love it. I have modified the forks slightly for off road and made it softer for this old man. Also added an FMF Q4 and went to the FMF Woods tune. It give great fuel economy with that tune. And Kyle is right, 3rd gear is great. It will pull down low in the rpm in 3rd and still pull out. I can bog mine into chain slap and make it beg pinging, and it will still pull and accelerate out. Curious on what you did and what you think if you got the FX.

@@ronbuellwinkler4586 I absolutely agree. My skills have improved and I’m still looking forward to improving more and getting even more seat time. You’re so right about 3rd gear too! I love it. I have an FMF exhaust as well. Other than that I’ve mostly just added things for extra trail protection. Skid plate and linkage guards, hand guards, front rotor guard. I’ve also gotten a shorter seat for mine and a lowering linkage for me.

Skid plate, radiator guards, Hand guards, radiator fan, we all added by PO to mine. I added a Guts Racing soft seat foam for more comfort and longer rides. All upgrades in my book. Keep fresh tires on it. Keep improving!@@Green_stax

Im 12 years old 5'8 and weigh 140 pound. I can start my dads 450, but its to much power for me but a 250f doesn't feel uncontrollable. what bike should I get.

Definitely learn on a smaller, lighter bike before you get something like a 450. You'll have more fun and get good experience.

Quick question! I remember you saying that you never really need a 450f because the 250 has enough power for everything. In that case why don't you ride a 125? Is it because the two stroke 300 has more low end grunt?
@DirtBikeChannel
@DirtBikeChannel 8 жыл бұрын
I really can't explain it but the 300 2 stroke is just magic. Doesn't eat you up like a 450 and can go slow better than any other bike I've ever been around. It also has enough power to do anything so, it's really hard to beat for an "all around" package.
