Why do people like the YZ250? Because it's the swiss army knife of 2 strokes. It's good in motocross, offroad racing and single track. It comes with awesome suspension. The engine is claw hammer reliable. A couple mods and it's competitive against newer 2T. You can put a WR400/426 transmission in it and it's a single track weapon. The same engine has been around since '99! Lots of aftermarket support. OEM parts are plentiful and worlds cheaper than anything other than Honda, and team red hasn't made a 2T for over a decade. Those are my reasons...

Agreed. Yamaha makes an affordable entry level race bike platform with the best bang for the buck and they keep the price low to open the market and sell more product and it works, for us and for them. It's well known that everyone mods their bikes so they make strong what needs to be safe, and cheaper of what needs general maintainance replacing. The very fist cars were water and battery powered. I see bikes evolving past this to the point that wheels might become secondary to hover or levitation technology like in Star Wars. Imagine THOSE races!!

I think alot of us love and support the yz125 and yz250 because YAMAHA is still awesome enough to continue offering these amazing bikes. I think if Suzuki Kawasaki and Honda got back in the game the support would be spread out again in the 2 stroke market. Let's face it. If you ain't Joe pro with someone paying the bill to fix your 4 stroke, most of us look at the cost as a killer expensive cost. So to avoid these expensive rebuilds we stick to 2 strokes. Just price a cylinder head,4 valves, cam, timing chain, and piston for a four stroke and that explains everything. I've been there. Oil pump drive gear got taken out by a transmission gear tooth. 4700 bucks to rebuild my yz450f .

@Badass Skepticfor the holeshot maybe not, but in real race 4 strokes are faster because they can find traction everywhere. Especially when the tract conditions are not perfect
@sciewter5 жыл бұрын
@Badass Skeptic 450's have more toque yes, but its not just that, its is how the power comes on. The traction on the 4 T is all delivery, that higher torque curve is spread out over a longer rpm range where the 2T hits in peak in a narrower rpm range causing wheel spin. To ride the 2t fast the rider has to develop clutch skills to keep things gripping. Same goes for the 500, most riders who raced them were in fact just as fast if not faster on their 250 2t's because the 500 power hit so hard and kicked their butts. Modern 450's are pushing the same if not higher stock power numbers as the old 500's and its spread out over more rpm. But no one smiles when they ride a 4t, every 2t rider knows the grin when the power comes on.

Sorry man, this is backwards. Four strokes need to be twice the cc to even come close to beating the power band of a two stroke.. I've never ever had problems beating any four strokes. But I will say this, they're both way different animals which serve the same purpose. To Have Fun... Lol..

the power band is what’s additive tbh

Yep the rush u get from the powerband is what keeps me a 2 stroke guy I have 4 strokes but I mostly ride my 2 strokes unless I'm leisurely riding the the woods with groups of people

Do you know why people love a yz 250? It is because they are fun to ride. Not super easy or super fast, but 10x the fun. Simple as that - there is always a smile on the riders face.

Because they are reliable as Hell and make good power. Plus they are comparatively cheap. The X would really sell if they added e start and a WR trans. 2Ts are just awesome in general. While I have a soft spot for the 250 Yam, I have an '18 KTM 300 XC with V4 reeds, an S3 head and a Lectron on it. The bike is awesome beyond words with power everywhere, great handling, e-start and counterbalanced glassy smoothness in a two stroke. I am 57, been riding and occasionally racing dirt bikes for over 40 years, and it is my mid life crisis dirt bike, as one has to wonder how many years they have left at this point. The KTM 300 is an amazing machine. Not cheap, but fuck it, I am not getting any younger, and I have the money - LOL

I totally agree! Same here with me! 52.5 years old & a shop full of 2-strokes! Ride them regularly! Still just as fun as when I was 11 years old. Been riding since then!

I can't remember every yz250 build I've ever read, but I have a couple questions. If you have a bike intended for mx, how much of a difference does it make having one guy port the engine and work the head versus another? If you picked two guys to build you an engine with the exact same intended use, rider skill, and fuel, how much different would the engines be? The reason I'm asking this is because there are 7 common configurations of the yz250 engine that people build. 1-stock, 2-stock with 93 octane head mod, 3-stock with 50/50 race/pump gas head, 4-stock with race gas head, 5-porting with 93 octane head, 6-porting with 50/50 race/pump gas head, 7-porting with race gas head. I'm sure people make big bores, strokers, and big bore strokers in those 7 configurations. I guess the same question can be asked about suspension also. Obviously I'm just using mx as an example. You could swap mx for sx, gncc, worcs, desert, hard enduro, and trail. Another factor is if the race gas that is being used is leaded and/or oxygenated or neither. What characteristics did the TMR engine have versus other yz250 engines that have been done in the same configuration, intended use, and rider skill? What characteristics did the TMR engine have versus other yz250 engines intended for mx, but not the same designated rider skill and/or fuel? thanks

The porting for MX use can give better hit and overall power but also make it a bit tougher to ride so maybe better suited for a more aggressive rider and you might have to shift a bit more.

love 2 stroke yzs and basically any yamaha. imo yamaha has the best engineers. all the parts are interchangeable between bikes. take a master cylinder for instance. that fits on a yz 250, 125 blaster, banshee etc. yamaha makes awesome 2 stroke atvs and one of the most badass street bikes in history (the rz 350) every time i go to the track, multiple people have yzs, whether they are new ones, or the steeleys. such a great bike and im glad yamaha still puts out new models each year. yes they havent changed much, but what they are doing is putting out lots of parts for people to have access to in order to keep their bike maintained. the last cr 125/250 was in 2007. Yamaha as of 2020 still puts those out. Whose parts will be easier to source in 20 years?

Would it be okay to run straight 100LL avgas, mixed with pre-mix oil? We've been buying VP110 and mixing 50/50 with 91 pump gas that contains ethenol. I work at the airport and it would be very easy for me to just buy 100LL isntead but I've heard it's bad for some reason.

I have 15 hrs on my 19 Ktm300xcw tpi. I cant attack single track on it the way I can on my 16 250x. Heading to race this weekend and I am taking the 250x while the $9,000 ktm sits at home. Kinda pisses me off actually. Hoping a Rekluse fixes the issue (250x has one).

Also there is a very short video on my channel of the bike running when it was idling just a couple of days ago. The most recent video is the one I'm talking about the one where it's smoking a lot I fixed it since then I ended up having to get a new set of cases for the bike and it was leaking a lot

When I said the holeshot,as soon as I hit 3rd gear I noticed and remember ed I did use cam 2 race fuel, versus straight 93 pump gas,now the ethanol free is a good option but it s mostly only 89 octane so u have to seek out 93 ethanol free, before u get serious and fibro race fuel.piece out....

Steel frames were seriously the best version of the yz250 ever. You cannot beat the handling and freedom that it has. My steel frame handles much better than my 2020 yz250f, and let me spoil it for you, this generation of 250f rips hard and handles amazing and just does every kind of turn well and a very neutral body position everywhere. But the steel frame is just… better. Unless youve ridden both, its very difficult to put into words

They arrnt cheap in the uk they hold their money unlike most other bikes here. I absolutely love mine it handles so good and the power delivery is just right not too aggressive but its got some go in it. Only problems ive had it the standard reeds in the yzs are shit. I had to replace 2 sets of reeds in the first year of ownership until i upgraded to boyesen coz im too tight for v force. 😂😂 and if you dont lock tight EVERYTHING they shake them selves to bits ive had the spark plug work its self out twice the sump plug drop out on me luckily id just finished the moto and it did no damage. They are litterally the only things that are a problem with them. Great bikes
