Thank you, thank you, thank you! After a fruitless struggle on my own I found several videos of other people also struggling to replace their tires. Then I found this video and I replicated your setup using a old 1/2" drill bit to hold the wheel and a short length of conduit on a piece of rebar as my roller and it was literally stupid easy to accomplish. I finished both my upper and lower wheels in less than 10 minutes! The best part is I've been struggling to rid my bought-cheap-on-craigslist used Ridgid BS1400 of stubborn vibration issues and replacing the tires was my final hope and that was it! The difference is nothing short of amazing.

DFJ, thank you for posting. I have a Laguna 14" and tried to install the new tire several times. It was not working for me. After watching your video, I made a jig. I made it shorter, placing the axel point near one end and the rod and pipe at the other. I also placed three washers under the wheel to elevate it off the wood. I tilted the latter more than you did, but I think it could be a more acute angle, still. The tire went on, first try. Thanks for your help.

DFJ - I’ve tried many different techniques in my time, but I just replicated the set-up you show in your video and the tires go on like butter. Beautiful video and fixture. Thank you so much. You’ve e got a new subscriber.

I don’t have a bandsaw (yet) and may never have one. I watched this video for the principles that work in other areas too. It is a practical use of time just benefiting from Jay’s life of learning (and sharing). The types of subject matter found from DFJ reveals that KZbin has a true Renaissance Man in its list of presenters.

Took longer to build jig than it did to actually put the tires on! And the jig was quick and easy. Thanks, DirtFarmer Jay!!!

Thanks Farmer Jay. This works like a charm. I used a 2x6, a half inch x 6" carriage bolt and 2 pieces of black pipe, 1 inside the other. I did warm up the tire in hot water first. It works great.

Well after 2 other attempts, I come to try your method here. AND it works very well! You have to make a jig, but it wasn't that hard, and I had it knocked out my jig in about 15 minutes, and the first tire went on in about 3 minutes later! PS ...I didn't use a clamp; I used a piece of string. THX! 😁👍

I've replaced the tires several times on various saws. This is the easiest way I've found. Even when the shop is cool. No heat, just the jig.

I ust used a dowel for the center and a philips screwdriver with a round shaft in a hole close to the wheel so it didn't need to stretch that far

I used this system. Used too small of an "axle" holding the wheel in the hole in the wood. So hit both edges that were about to go over the wheel with a hairdryer and that worked.

Did you heat the tire first? Hot water?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 2 жыл бұрын
I did not. I made sure the tire was room temperature, and that is all. The package actually had a warning against heating the tires and recommended they be mounted on the wheels without putting the tires in hot water. With the method I demonstrated, it worked fine! Best, DFJ

You can hear them in boiling water. It won't hurt anything no matter what others may say. If they can't hold up to hot water then they're junk and not real urethane. Heating them eliminates the needs for all this setup.

Good grief. Check out the vid by the Wood Whisperer. A little time in hot water and the tires will go on with a whole lot less trouble than this.

Don, thanks for stopping by! The manufacturers that I talked to don't recommend hot water. As a matter of fact they told me not to do it, and the material works much better as it stretched evenly. So, it appears there's a diversity of opinion on the approach. But, thanks for writing! Best regards, DFJ

Man you just totally over complicated that. I just installed a neoprene set on my Grizzly G0555 while on the saw - everything in place. I used 3 clamps and 2 flat blades.

Nicely done, Mark AG. I have done what you have done in the past and had success with one tire, and damaged the other. I too clamped the tire in place with 3 clamps and attempted to get the last part of with flat bars. It didn't go well, but glad to hear it did for you. Thanks for taking time to write. Best, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay Thanks, DFJ. Glad you didn’t take offense. I had just installed mine and was searching on KZbin because my new neoprene tires are a little wide in places. I was looking to see if others had the same issue and if they had trimmed them. I’m wondering if they’ll eventually shrink a tad and fall into place. The blade is tracking straight and it’s running quiet, it just doesn’t look right. Again, no hard feelings.

@@Brauma54 - no offense taken. We enjoy the conversations we get to have with our viewers. I was able to get the tires to fit well with no overlap on the sides, but I know others have had the issue you describe. It can be a combo of either inconsistency in the width of the tire or the metal wheel, but that isn't usually the case. It is more likely that the tire is stretched tighter in sections and looser in others. The looser sections are thicker and wider than the more stretched sections. Although you didn't prefer the method I showed, it does allow for the tire to be seated at a more uniform stretch and pressure all around the wheel, and the tire will tend to run smoother instead of "loping" along. If there is "lope" when you run the saw, it's likely that you need to get the tire stretched evenly all around by getting your flat bars under the tire and inserting the round shaft of a screwdriver between the tire and wheel, and running in all around the wheel to get a uniform stretch. If you are confident that the uniform stretch has been accomplished already, the excess can be trimmed off with a sharp utility knife. Let me know how it turns out! Best, DFJ

@@Brauma54 I bought 1" tires, but needed 3/4. I trimmed it to about 13/16 and it fits better than the original.
