It's not that fragile. Broken pieces are more from storage damage or yard help yahooing on the fork lift. Pipe sections should only touch once, when being installed.

I try to salvage old concrete culvert pipe to do farm crossings, save farmers a few bucks and put something to use that otherwise gets pitched. Sometimes the ends are damaged and getting the bells to fit decent is tough when using a chain or strap wrapped around. What I've taken to doing for placement: I had an old 3/4" threaded eye-bolt, about 12" long, that came off the tensioning cable of a power pole. Made a 4"x5"x1/2" thick plate, slightly curved to allow for culvert radius, and then two nuts to be safe. I hammer drill a 1" hole at the balance point of the culvert section, slide the threaded end thru, then the plate, then nuts, lift and place. Where the hook is in an eye, X and Y axis are easy to maneuver setting in place. I need to get a swivel hook like yours, much better than what I've got. When all sections are set, I use a little urethane rock filler to plug the holes, lay some woven road fabric over the top, and backfill/compact. The reason I started doing it this way was that I work alone a good share of the time, and needed a method where I wasn't making a lot of cab exits to adjust or re-hook chains. Also, if you get all the sections hooked together and something settles out of place or things need snugged up, it's easy enough to put the bolt back thru and adjust a little - major PITA trying to hook a chain back thru underneath after placement. And all concrete pipe has reinforcing mesh, not sure about clay, may not like being drilled and creating a fracture point. Your hook/chain method is likely best, don't want to watch $45 turn into $0 and hauloff.

When dad was installing clay pipes, the the company he worked for used rubber O rings. He's in his mid 80's now and definitely retired! Oh and ceramic things are wonderful, for developing cracks, that you can't see when they're handled wrong/roughly!

Mike we used the Hyundai hx160L on it’s first job the other day. Installed a complete septic system in a day. Dug the tank hole out in about 20min. 375ft of gravel pipe lines. We are very happy so far with this thing. Thanks again for your help we purchased a Hyundai because of you! Oh ours has a fancy haptic controller that makes navigating the display even easier.

One thing a lot of people do not realize is that when the hydraulic track hoe replaced the cable hoe, excavators began to replace track loaders for many contractors. And when Yanmar invented the mini-excavator, contractors began to use those in lieu of the backhoe. Manufacturers began to notice that the blade on the mini-backhoe could work just as well on bigger models, negating the need of many small contractors for a dozer.

Good video!! Installing the clay pipes show how belled tile is more labor intense when installing. Few if any concrete or clay pipe laid around here anymore. It would be LARGE diameter, 4 ft. plus, and a government road even then.

You should leave the piping work to a sewer and water contractor. Sewer lasers proper pipe slings and stone bedding should have been used. But you get a A + for effort. Keep up the good work.

The marker will soon be a thing of the past, with all the GPS electronics and auto steer they have on equipment these days. All the time Dad farmed he never used a marker. He had a 2 row John Deere 919 horse drawn planter with the hitch cut down for the tractor, and set his tractor wheels out to where they would be to cultivate. When you turned around on the end, you just line your tire up with the last track and go. Simpler days, but a lot more manual labor back then.

It's crazy but a lot of old cities are still using a lot of this type of pipe that's still functioning that's well over 100 years old in their infrastructure but yet the pipe they use now days you're lucky to get 25 to 50 years out of it. But yet the clay pipe is considered out dated technology. Happy 4th Mike and family!

I accidentally found this channel when I found a video about installing a culvert for Farm Chris. I grew up on a farm in NM Indiana so I thought I would see what is happening. Well......................This drew me into following this channel. I cannot believe all of the off the wall crap Mike does!!! Very interesting projects which are presented in a entertaining manner. The channel is a lot of real life the way it really is. Laughing and cutting up is a part of life. A little too giddy?? You talk too much? Maybe they want a silent movie. Hey Mike, I grew up right there by Derby over of off French Ridge Rd. That being said that great to to see the work you're doing. Very informative and detailed, I appreciate the info. That being said, I see your shop all the time......I'm building my own now, since I have my own trucking company with several tractor trailer end dumps. Looking to build to accommodate the trucks. Any thoughts on metal or pole barn style? Width x length? Longest truck is 300 wb with a 42 ft spread axle dump. So I want to pull through the shop if need be and close both doors with rig and trailer inside. Your thoughts would be appreciated sir. Thanks again.

Wyatt. One thing to consider that does get overlooked is to make sure the building is long enough to get around the truck inside with the roll up doors closed. Ensure you account for the hood being open on the truck. I worked for a propane company back in the 90’s and when a new shop was built west of Toronto the “engineer” didn’t account for getting around the truck with the hood open. They barely gave room to walk around with the hood closed. 🤦‍♂️

I will second making your shop longer than the the tractor/trailer with the hood up on the tractor. Also think about the future. Is a 42 foot trailer going to be as long as you ever will use?? When I built my last shop even though I did not have a 53" ft. van I made the shop long enough to get one inside with a conventional sleeper tractor. My shop is eighty ft. you have good room front and back. I though about 75 f.t and it would be tight. My shop is 15 years old. We have went from 42 ft. grain trailers to 48 ft. tri-axle trailers. Plus our belt trailers went from 44 ft. to 52 ft. long. My point is build for the future IF you can afford it now. Doing it now will always be cheaper than adding on in the future. As for metal or pole barn style building. IF you look at a pole barn type building make darn sure your being quoted the correct treated posts for long life when in ground contact. A lot of 20 year old buildings around here have rotted off post in them, even with concrete floors around the posts. The better posts will be 30-40% more costly. As for metal buildings keep in mind finishing the inside costs more with them. They are harder to insulated. You will need plywood behind the bottom metal to have anything to hook conduit and other stuff too.

Check out R+R building on ytube, he uses engineered poles that sit on top of concrete pad so you'll never have that rot issue! That's how I'm gonna build my shop when the time comes.

I stopped at our local Hyundai dealer yesterday and looked at a 55-9A . Great visibility , but getting the door shut from being latched open sucked. I have to stand up and reach out to pull on the door. I hopped in a 145 and the right side visibility went away. The 55 has nothing to obstruct the view out the right window. Plus the 55 had a grease zerk cluster on the front , maybe 10 . Make for quick greasing. The safety latch for the left control was problematic, might be adjustable. If it’s not, it would be extremely irritating. I was short on time so I never asked to run it. But I’d like to at some point.
