Some rule like "every 20lbs bigger = you need 1 more year training to beat them", might work but there's just no way to predict any outcomes with it. It can't account for like fifty things and variables that go into winning a random fight. That's why the first rule of self-defense is to de-escalate until you can't. Hopefully your training does negate their advantages, otherwise why train at all? If I train to fight only big people for instance, I might lose any time I can't be faster than the guy.

I have had this conversation with many people. I practice self defense with friends from time to time and have attended self defense seminars. I wish I had more money to train more often but I can't so I do what I can.when it comes to size power and strength you better believe that it does make a difference. Its very important to learn effective techniques for both small and large people. When it comes to physical confrontations you have to be able pull off your techniques before the other person can regardless of your size.at the end of the day it pretty much comes down to your skill level training and experience.if you can try your best to stay out of fights and walk away if you can but if you are forced to defend yourself, you do what you have to and hopefully your level of training will be enough to protect yourself.

Great stuff! This reminds me a lot of Wing Chun kung fu that often gets a bad rep. Here's the 2 major strikes that are effective when you're small : HEADBUTTS AND BALLKICKS (high soccerkick) 1) Your skull is at the level of your opponents chin : advantage for the small one. Moreover headbutts are perfect diring cliches and you don't wanna break your hand by throwing punches 2) no need to throw fancy headkiks when the tall dude in front of you have his pair of balls at perfect soccer kick position. 3) extra : large hands are more likely to break : let the tall opponent break his hand on your forehead when you can throw any shots that will land on his chin

Hi Mike, great video. Are there any icebreakers for people who are scared to connect? I was training in the gym and some girl wanted me to show her some basic self defense stuff, so I showed her some basic tricks how to keep distance. When it came to byceps control and mainly cross face, she was afraid to push me so she just leaned back. How do you deal this issue?
@hard2hurt4 жыл бұрын
She was leaning back because she was uncomfortable, because you made her uncomfortable. The icebreaker to self defense training for people who are uncomfortable with contact is padwork. Unless you're asking for pickup lines lol in which case I am no expert but I would say just be yourself and stop touching strangers.

@@hard2hurt Thank you for your answer. Now I realise I forgot how used I am to fighting. As I am thinking about it, she was ok with putting her palm on my face, but as I made a small step against her to show her, she can easily hold me back, she started to lean back instead of pushing my chin. I didn't realise untill now I made her uncomfortable just by trying to close the distance. For me it's completely natural to push my sparring partner back if he's getting too close.

If it's a self defense situation that technique puts you in a perfect position to eye gouge the other guy, or pull a weapon with your right hand. You basically have the other guy's head immobilized. Even something improvised like a ball-point pen to the nose or eye will end a fight real quick.

Yo Icy Mike! Quick question- I did tkd for 10 years, and recently Ive done Muay Thai for the last 2 years. Would Judo be a good choice to add some grappling and throwing knowledge? Cuz man, Ive got decent striking, but a guy charging me, throwing me, or taking me down sounds pretty scary cuz thats well out of my comfort zone.
@antonbyebajraktaraj13492 жыл бұрын
I would try jiu jitsu or wrestling. At a good bjj/ grappling gym you will also learn takedowns and some judo throws cause wrestling judo and bjj were designed to complete each other. So I think its better to start with BJJ cause you learn fighting from your back/having someones, the whole submission area while still learning how to fall and learn correctly and mixed with some basic judo amd wrestling techniques you have a complete base on ground fighting. You could also just work on takedown defense and submission defense as a muay thai guy who uses clinches a lot and use it to capitalize with your striking. And the great thing is you can train no gi or with gi to make it more realistic for self defense situations.

I have been watching a ton of videos on this channel lately and practicing a lot of stuff I see on here for fitness and just to learn some decent form. It seems like in most videos though, the theme is "this skill will not work in a street fight". Can anyone point me into a video that covers what is best to do in a street fight scenario? I don't plan on getting in any but I live in Baltimore so you never know. But from watching videos on both this channel and many others the list of things that aren't effective in a fight are: boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, body shots, leg kicks, grappling of any kind except maybe a little bit of clinch work, and many other things I am surely forgetting. Any chance of getting a video on the very best skillset for a street fight or guiding me to it? I can't imagine that the wild haymakers and rapid fire strikes that people throw in street fights are the end all be all. Of course the best skill is avoidance, but there has to be a few things that work with reasonable efficiency. At least for self preservation if things do end up getting physical

No disrespect, but your first move against the collar grab would have garnered a headbutt. Anytime the heads are that close... first one in wins... if a big strong bully gets in your face. your best move is to backup with hands up in front of your face and firmly say "hold on there big fellow" keep...holding your palms up and out a little above eye level... palms up in front of you..a gesture of peacemaking.. (he thinks). if he keeps coming, keep backing away...wait for the right distance ... then quickly step forward and slam the closes palm upward into his nose area, in the same move gouge and rake your fingers down into his eyes before bring your hands back (fingers or right there anyway after the palm to the nose) and step back..then just as quick, when he reaches up to his face with pain, (an involuntary nerve reaction) knee him twice in the balls and one more in his bent over face...BAM BAM! That should do it.. that's garbage fighting... I've used it a few times, when I had to, as a relatively small bouncer in very badass bars. If you can make sense outta my verbal instructions... introduce it in your next video.. just tell'em "It's CYBOPOD SHIT like" lol...great video by the way...good stuff..

Saw a fascinating takedown technique for when they try to clinch you like that from a muai thai guy - headbutt their sternum right between the nipples and push on that spot with your forehead, while also pulling their lower back into you. Fuckin' painful even when you're doing it light, and takes them down very quickly without putting you off balance. Never seen anything like it before, but it was very cool. It doesn't technically even need to be a headbutt, it just works better if it is.
