I watched this because I play the Black Lion myself. These lines are why I'd advise other Black Lion players to play 5...h6 after White's 5 Bc4

Exactly the point, this is a straw man refutation, not an actual tutorial for refuting best play

For black, instead of bishop to e7, push the C pawn to c6, if knight to g5, then pawn to d5, threatening to take the bishop and removing the pile up on f7. I play the philidor a lot and have no problem with this move order. I used to move the dark square bishop as you suggest but kept getting caught out with the issues on the f7 square.

I'm not sure that a number of lines and positions in this video are evaluated properly and despite the player titles, sometimes the play was inaccurate. I'd say one thing is common practically throughout... The positions can be highly complex and debatable. In general though, I'd say a number of principles appear often... Rook vs 2 pieces and pawns - If the side with the rook doesn't catch up in development and have open lines to roam, he's toast against the 2 pieces. In several lines surprisingly the side with the rook actually closed the position and there were no fully open files. Rook Pawn vs 2 Knights - Of course Knights are infamous for being helpless against passed rook pawns. Unblocked pawn masses - In some of the examples, it looks like the side playing against the mobile pawn mass needs a refresher reading Nimzovitch's "My System." There are some interesting ideas in this video's content but I wouldn't rely entirely on evaluations and sometimes play but considering the complexity of some of the positions might be worth playing if you're either very good at these kinds of complex positions or do a lot of preparation.

@edmondzeldin7036
@edmondzeldin7036 3 жыл бұрын
First, this is the Hanham/Lion and not the Black Lion. Second and more important, at 3:37 you say that the black king's only good move is to e8. That's a serious blunder because then Ne6 wins the trapped queen. The correct king move is to g8. Maybe you should watch GM Finegold's Philidor video series on chess.com.

You gave every variation based on Be7 played before h6. Basically, you beat players who don't know how to play the opening. Big surprise (not really), that's true for every opening. This video should be labeled something like 'traps for the black lion' or something like that. Give refutations for the strongest play, not for the mixed up opening lines, lol

Then queen to h5. This isn't the move order you will get against a good philidor player though. They will have pushed the C pawn earlier, then block your light squared bishop with d5. Removing the threat to f7 square and creating counter play on your queen side.
