Rule 48.1(i) clearly states - whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not “picked” as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward. This means the hit was illegal because he had upward trajectory proven by his leaving his feet after initial contact. Had he gone through Knies and not left his feet then it would be legal, but because he moved upward for an elevated hit which concluded in contact with heqd this is a 2 minute minor penalty with option for review by NHLPS. But because they called it clean, now we cannot even get review without putting in a complaint with NHLPA

Dead on. That hit was head contact first. It doesn't matter if the player had his head down. If it did, Reaves wouldn't be serving 5 games. I don't see a suspension but a penalty for sure.

Curious about your thoughts on this hit that knocked a player unconscious. There was no direct hit to the head, so no head contact. Clean hit? Boarding? Interference? kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKWbiI1qjZKonqc
@Themanwiththeplan855 сағат бұрын
Real simple. The refs should have just left it a 5 minute major. No hearing or suspension. Everyone would have moved on by now. Refs and league blew it as usual. Why must I love this sport ugh
@martinskowronek8 сағат бұрын
On the flip side you can't hit to the head and the head was the first point of contact since in the replay his head jolted back first before his body after getting hit. Regardless it's on knies to not skate down and lean forward and whitecloud made no effort to not hit him in the head either. Should have been 2 mins for check to the head and no suspension

Tell me how he left his feet, even if it was after contact, if there was no upwards momentum from the hit. That makes it illegal in my book. Forget the headshot, there was definitely upwards momentum. This is why you dont see D-man leveling people on the blue line, mid ice, anymore. Its not allowed.

Right on Rosie. I agree with you completely. Much like those who want fighting out of our game, I have to wonder if these people actually like hockey. Part of what makes the game exciting is the element of risk inherent in a game happening so fast. Just as in boxing, rule one in hockey must be protect yourself at all times. Or as we say it, " keep your heads up boys"

Perfect explanation, Knies momentum forces Whitecloud upwards on contact giving the illusion of leaving his feet. More and more NHL referees were at one time NHL draft picks/players. I think they have a pretty good grasp on what’s going on.

going to catch the head? He targeted the head.. watch it a few times more LOL the dude bucks up and launches his shoulder into his head. That was 100% on purpose and targeted. His head was the point of contact.. Jesus man, of all the people on this planet I thought would have a good take on this was you.. If he hit him in the chest and rode up into his head yeah that's ok.. If he hit him in the shoulder and went up into his head yeah, that's ok.. Not locked on and launching like a rocket directly into someone's head FFS.. Damn Jay.. C'mon.. I don't expect you to be calling for the guy to be stoned or anything LOL but gawd almighty, didn't expect you to come out like the guys personal lawyer and play this off like it was nothing..

The game needs more hitting. Not less. The NHL says this is the most skilled era. Yet 95% of league can't skate with their head up.
@discoveryman592 сағат бұрын
The hit was fine, so was the Ryan Reaves on Darnell Nurse! It a contact sport! Keep your hear up. The real problem was the Leafs should have made Whitecloud's life a little more uncomfortable after the hit. You do have to give some credit to the Leafs, They do have to improve their offensive zone pressure, spending WAY to much time in the D-zone.
@Rob781698 сағат бұрын
Get rid of the checking to the head penalty since who knows what it is. It's insane. And Rosey saying players will just skate with their heads down, thought that's what players are doing now since hit to the head was supposedly automatic. Players feel like they can't get crushed.

Are they not kind of spinning a wheel of subjective context when making a ruling? I find it hard to fathom that if that were a repeat offender making a hit just like that, and then the laid out player was left motionless and bleeding on the ice for some time, that there would have been no penalty? Of course, no-one can know Whitecloud's intent for sure, but given the earlier unpenalized face-plant of his teammate into the glass, I find it hard to believe that didn't factor into an intent to injure. And he's played long enough to know that he just might get away with the headhunting if he also gets enough of the body in the process-- and even if he does get penalized, it'll have been worth it for the sake of enforcing the unwritten 'code'. If those making the call subjectively feel that that was the case, then they should be inclined to penalize the hit. In this case, they apparently were naive enough to believe otherwise.

I am very surprised at Jay's position on this. I'm sorry but you are full of contradiction and toward the end you retreat to promoting polarized outcomes to support your argument. The full spectrum requires consideration when it comes to player safety. Look at Whitecloud's head relative to the top dasher on the boards throughout the sequence. You talk at length about momentum, the video shows him going from a crouch for power in legs to full body extension as his elbow makes contact with the head and with his feet off the ground during the full impact of the hit. When the feet leave the ice is immaterial, he knew exactly what he was doing. "Through the body" implies a horizontal trajectory, feet leaving the ice demonstrates a vertical trajectory. IMO head contact is head contact and because of the speed it has no part in the game. Every instance, under any circumstance should be a minor at least and all should be reviewed by DPS. Did Knies have his head down, for a instant but at contact he wasn't expecting the vertical trajectory because that is charging according to rule 42, or are you suggesting the rule doesn't come into play if the jump takes place a millisecond after the players elbow makes contact with the targets head? It's a fast game yes, but if we are truly concerned about player safety then lets be sure to slow down and ensure the rules are applied correctly to protect players. Tough call in the moment, but no follow up after the fact sets a dangerous precedent.

It didn't result in an injury or media attention, but I was more disturbed by the hit McNabb threw targeting, the head of the falling and defenseless Benoit, no way that 2 minutes was sufficient, that could easily have been a match penalty

@jimdorey65566 сағат бұрын
I respect your opinion, but stop saying he did not leave his feet while contact was made. That’s irrelevant. The rule clearly states the player must hit squarely through the body. This is not the case. He clearly has drastic upward trajectory throughout the hit. And an upward trajectory is not hitting squarely through the body. Second, KNIES has his head up and knees bent. Of course you lead with your head if you’re knees are bent. Look at every skating video on how they teach people to skate since Novice. You can’t actually skate without leading with your head if your knees are bent properly. Third, KNIES clearly tried to defend himself at the last second by pulling his hands and stick up to protect himself. As I said, I respect your opinion… But please go back and look at these items again Rosie. It makes you and this podcast not relevant when you make a baseless claim and then keep restating non-evidence about the feet being on the ground at the instant of contact. We can do better than this boys. And sadly, you just guaranteed we will never see KNIES speak on this podcast in the future. That may have been a career changing hit for him, and you’ve blown it off as a good clean, hit to the head somehow. :-(

@scottsquires47855 сағат бұрын
The problem with your description is that it is 2024, not 2006 when you were playing. The league doesn't want any head shots, by accident or on purpose. A stick that hits a head is a penalty when it is totally by accident, they say you have to be in control of your stick at all times. That's fair, but this guy hit a guy in the head and it's basically not called. I don't have a problem with these hits, but they told us when we were 8 years old to keep our head up. In the least, The Leafs should not have been killing a penalty after the Knies hit. Doesn't matter now

Well Done Rosie ❤ I’m a diehard leaf fan and a former Omha and OHA referee, and you have absolutely nailed this interpretation of the rule correctly. Unfortunately, Knies got rocked cleanly ,leading with his head down at full speed and got caught in what we use to call “The trolly tracks “ .

Moronic take by Rose Hill. Bottom line is he made contact to his head at first and it’s up to the player throwing hit did not hit him in the head. I can show you 1000 different hits exactly the same that got five and a game. Basically what you’re saying between this hit and Reeves is that timing is everything. I would argue that not connecting with the head first is everything
