Opening song sung by the late Miki Matsubara who was as beautiful as her voice. Passed away in 2004 of cervical cancer. A beautiful soul with a tragic ending.

I know typing this makes you sound like a grumpy old-head, but you can literally count with one hand the amount of openings we've gotten in the last couple of decades that had a sequence half as memorable as this one. Only one show comes to mind off the top of my head and that'd be Mob Psycho 100. I feel like they didn't just make a highlight reel of people posing to a generic song. Voices like Miki's are also rare these days, but that just might be because of the overall homogeneity of the content and the form. I haven't given up on the medium though, the possibility of a "comeback" is always there. The right generation has to align and nurture that drive.

I am seriously thinking that the knife sequence at 0:44 one of the best transitions of the whole animation history. I mean: 5 scenes in roughly 2 seconds. Jawdropping.

Every time I see this intro, I immediately say to myself, "Would be awesome if a James Bond movie opened with this kind of animation - specifically this kind of style, too." However, anime styles have changed so significantly over the past 3 decades I'd be surprised if most available professionals would be able to pull it off. Not through lack of skill mind you - anime has proven time and again it's been improving in more ways than most people think. I just think most current animators would have trouble emulating this kind of style without rigorous amount of attention to detail.

I think you're being incredibly nitpicky. This opening was for a movie, and was far from the norm since they had the budget to do so. Have you actually seen an anime opening from the 80s, because a lot of them are just as cliched as anime from today.

If you mean the overall "look" and "feel" of anime in the early 80s to mid 90s I couldn't agree with you more. Kinda feels like someone slapped you in the face with a rainbow of euphoria XD.More effort and love was put into it movies and television series back then. Drop that +100 experience pionts of almost EVERYTHING being drawn by hand,theres ALOT of easy to miss gems from then that are still sitting around waiting to be found again. Doubt you want anyone giving you reccomendations buy if you haven't already check the Patlabor tv series out along with the three movies. It's a classic you might like depending on your tastes, oh have to add "Ranma 1/2" in there aswell that's a keeper too.Glad to see more people glancing back at stuff like this.😁😆

80s were booming for japan, they had money to waste on experimental projects and risky decisions, so you got a lot of guys that wanted to try their hand at something crazy getting hired and picked up and allowed to create crazy things. Similar thing happened after evangelion but it was more of "Hey, evangelion was popular because it was weird, right?" and everyone trying to shove weird arthouse stuff and philosophy into everything. There seems to be another creativity boom on the horizon with the rise of web gen animators and greater opportunities for animators. (in the opposite reason as the 80s, the industry now needs more staff so it will take what it can get and scout out talent online) We can see some of this coming through with the surge in original risky anime early this year/new decade and more staff realising that bland adaptations of popular work or cute character designs wont cut it anymore.

@Gabriel871004 жыл бұрын
The movie itself barely connects to the anime or the OVAs, the dude main character seemed like a bizarre self insert of someone in the staff and the girls are very out of character. It's a pretty chaotic movie, like a mashup of multiple ideas they had but were discontinued along the way with nothing to attach the strings.

@@jashinslayer it's amazing how all the shonen you listed have beautifully animated moments in them. You'd be as big a fool to deny the artistry in scenes like Yutaka Nakamura's Deku vs Todoroki as you would the stunning designs by Koji Morimoto shown here. And if animation quality isn't the problem (which it shouldn't be), maybe stop focusing on boy's cartoons and check out stuff intended for adults?
