Dirty pour, Kalena flows again! Terracotta Pot Acrylic Pour with heat and silicone

With a mix of approximately 1:1 paint and pva, then thin to the consistency of honey using floetrol added gradually. A small spray of silicone mixed in prior to pouring the paint into the cup.
I use heavy body Mont Marte dimensions paint here.

A "strap wrench" is a great way to open all those jars I saw you struggling with. My arthritis makes it hard to open even easy to open jars so I have one in my kitchen and my studio/office. Hope this tip will help you as well. Very interesting techniques - love the pot!

Any home improvement store and but I found my first one in the tools section of my local grocery store. Was just wondering if you could use styrofoam sheets under a canvas so you could capture the paint coming off the pot. You’d have to play around with thickness of the foam I think. The flat sheets would distribute the weight of the pot and if they’re thick enough that would give you clearance from your work table. Hmmm....what to do with the empty spot on the canvas after you moved the pot aside? Maybe saving a bit of paint to pour in the center could work. And I’m also thinking you’d probably still have enough paint dripping off a canvas that you’d still have skin for jewelry making. I also saw someone make coasters with the drips from her canvas. She used resin to coat the pieces. Looked nifty. I got to thinking about doing a vase, coasters and a canvas or....

as you spin it around i can see rows of people. very impressive. i wonder if you could use the excess paint if you did this over another canvas and manipulated the paint after removing the pot to a drying position............if you have tried this, did it work???? curious much. thanks for sharing, I would like to try this myself if i can organise myself a spinny table-top thingee :)

Such a beautiful piece! I've been working with clay pots for various craft pieces. Painting them with either spray paint or acrylic using a brush. I have soooo wanted to pour paint because it's so beautiful. I don't have the confidence to advance to this but working on it. Then there is the cost of the silicone, floetrol, etc. Not easy when on a fixed income. I think if I view some more of your videos I just might work up the nerve to try. Keep these videos coming! You do such a wonderful job!

Thank you so much Lee ❤ I felt the same way about pouring before I tried. I felt that I had no artistic flair and that there was no way it was as simple as the people described it on KZbin, that they were editing somehow to make it look easy! Turns out it really is easy, just a touch more time consuming than you see in the video but that's only because of the mixing of the paint. It sounds like you're already well on your way with the art you already produce, I would give it a try! The paint is the most expensive start up cost but you have that, silicone is just a spray can of wd40 or similar, for me it cost about $4 from memory and I'm still using the same can I started with. Floetrol is costly but can be substituted for water, this does give you a slightly different result but on a budget, water is an excellent way to start. This way all you need is silicone. 🙂 I hope you give it a try. I'd love to hear back if you do. Kalena

I kept thinking how wonderful it would have been if there had been a Tera cotta saucer underneath to make a set. Carpal tunnel? My wrist and fingers were hurting just watching you stir. Maria Crespo hmmm... I guess it depends on if you want to do the shade or the base! The shade could be interesting done with a drizzle around the middle of the height, hold it on its side and spin it while you pour... nor sure if that makes sense?!

Thanks Christine, The fire helps to create cell shapes in the paint by burning off the oil in the silicone and also by bringing small air bubbles to the surface through layers of paints. A similar effect well be achieved without heat but the heat accelerates the effect allowing a lot more cells. Cheers, Kalena :)

I actually considered dribbling lighter colours over the top of it but liked it so much that I was afraid to ruin it. Although the video represents the colours fairly well, it doesn't pick up the lighter pinks in the finished pour quite so well, but yes, it does have quite a bit of dark in it.

Thank you :) yes, I treat the interior with a terracotta pot and ornament sealer, I apply two coats. It works a treat, I've got pots outside that I've been using for over three years with no problems.

In short, I really don't know exactly why, I know I like the crisp pattern I get when using it so perhaps it makes it more difficult for the different colours to mix when it's added. If your unsure about using it, perhaps do some test pours with and without it. Good luck, I hope this helps somewhat.

Hi, thank you :) I picked up the lazy susan from a $2 shop. They're sometimes difficult to find and are not all the same in terms of how they spin. I've found the glass ones to be the best as they seem to spin more smoothly and quieter than the wooden ones. Worth noting is that I use a piece of melamine under the pots to capture the drips as you can peel the dried paint off that but you can't peel it off glass.

I certainly do. I use a dulux indoor outdoor clear sealer, it comes in gloss or matt. I usually use gloss but that's just preference.

NG B thank you 🙂 The pots are sealed in and out and quite happily take plants. I have quite a few planted with succulents and they look beautiful. Internally they are sealed with a pot and ornament sealer and externally the combination of floetrol/pva in the paint and an indoor outdoor high gloss varnish, protects the finish.

The drippings yourself ready, we should put, the round wooden cup holders down on top of the bank informed straight up and you'd have the pattern on your cup holders. Or put the little small pots underneath to catch the drippings and let it drip off that and see if you can get enough on the little ones from all the droppings.

Pam Howard the coasters are a great idea! It's certainly worth a try. Using the smaller pots wouldn't get the pattern effect I'm after I don't think as the paint would be too mixed. I use the dried paint skin to make jewellery so I try not to waste any. Is like to try the coasters though. Thank you :)

I seal the internal only and use a terracotta sealer, it should be available from any nursery or hardware store. The external I don't seal as the paint slides right off it (made that mistake once!) With the raw terracotta the paint absorbs in and allows more of a pattern to be held.

Myrna McColley I move it off immediately to dry in a more convenient location. Whilst pouring I have it sitting on a piece of thin melamine and this allows me to slide it off the turntable to dry elsewhere.

I've been trying to work out how I can do that as the pots are quite heavy and would damage the canvas. Unless I use a canvas board I'm not sure how to do it. I do use the extra paint but you're right, it would definitely be interesting to see what happens with a canvas underneath.

You can certainly use silicone oil instead, just use only a drop or two of it. The spray was the easiest thing for me to get and is really easy to control how much goes in and I've found it super easy to mix through. They would produce the same outcome.

Hi Michelle, the price varies depending on the size and shape of the pot but, as a general guideline, I sell them for AU$25 and upward. The biggest pots I've done were for my own garden and stand at around 55cm tall. Basically it's the sort of thing that is somewhat flexible and either made to order or able to be selected from existing stock. Price would be dependent on those factors at times. Cheers, Kalena

I’ve been enjoying learning from you, but I just had to give this video a thumb’s down. Why? Because the first 6 minutes we just watched you mixing paint. It’s so much nicer when everything is ready to go, including the silicone. Then it’s just a few moments to share names and makers of the paints and your mixture ratios. I think you’re spot on saying a top shot would be nice; it’s also interesting to see the paint going into a clear cup. It’s always fascinating to see the actual pouring and the colors dancing around. Kalena....love the music, and of course your work. Seems like a bit of wasted of paint though. What if... after pouring your terra-cotta pot, give a minute then transfer to another location to dry. Slowly spin turntable, gradually increasing speed til extra paint spins into another piece of art work. I'm certainly no expert, but it seems like you might kill two birds with one stone. Good luck

That sounds like a great idea, my concern is that the colours would blend together too much as they spin out though. When doing canvases on the turntable this can happen if you spin too long. Also, I'm not sure how to get something in place to be able to spin onto it without spraying the entire room! (Not advisable in a rental home...) after numerous suggestions I am trying to work out how to get a canvas under to catch the run off paint, no success yet though so I'll have to settle for using the dry skins to make jewellery!
