Back in school we had a forging class and that class tend to bring a few girls cause of it's artistic side to it and one girl was going to drill a 10mm hole in a piece of flat bar iron. I saw from the other side of the workshop how she hanged with all her weight on the lever and the drill at this moment was glowing red. I was to far away to bother as there was no obvious danger but I watched how she pulled on that lever and tried to literally melt her way through, the drill and iron bar started to melt but she didn't stop until the drill started burning and sending of sparks. I think she then asked the teacher for help and he said "you must've pulled like crazy" where she responded "NO I didn't pull hard at all". The iron looked like you've pushed something down into butter.

Del states that the angle of the dangle must be concentric to the dingle of the hand vice. What is so difficult to understand - people should give the guy a break. We all know he is out of his depth but please give DelBoy some cred' He's invested in borrowing a pillar drill and hand vice at no small expense for our education. You might not know but over on the Isle of Wight they only recently discovered hot and cold running water so he is well ahead of the curve when it comes to drilling. Basic stuff to Del

If you put the metal in the freezer the night before it helps with cooling and also makes it super slippy like ice! There's a bonus as the metal shrinks slightly in the freezer so you won't need to buy larger drill bits as you can use smaller drill bits and when the metal gets back to room temperature the hole will also expand! 🙈🙉🙊

Quick tip I just learnt. My grinding wheel spins downward, obviously the wrong way for drill sharpening. Just rewire it to spin upward to get it to grind up the back face towards the tip away from the front edge at a tangent to the point at the other end from the round section.
@angusmacgillivray47415 жыл бұрын
Another quick tip I just learnt. Matt, if your extra tight virgin olive oil and water emulsion keeps separating out, don't panic, just use a dab of COPPER GREASE on your tip and you will be deep drilling holes in no time. Trefolex? Fook it. I wouldn't spread it on my toothbrush

I also have a tip, that I have just made up as I go along writing this comment. If you buy a second battery for your bike and serial connect it to your stock battery, it makes the headlight much brighter. It also makes the spark on the spark plug twice as big, which as a bonus makes the engine twice as hot. But that is not an issue if you have the Evans waterless coolant! 👍
@alastairdifford20286 жыл бұрын
That was amazing lol. I have to admit It takes some skill to get that smooth curve on his drill bit lol

Hey Matt! What lubrication do you use when you drill a left hand hole? Do you use any additives to compensate for the rotation forces of the earth interfering with the rotation of the drill bit?
@robertmurphy29605 жыл бұрын
I'm a tool maker carbide is not the same as high speed steal or tungsten. Carbide will not melt at the same lower heats as steal alloys. It consists of fine particles of carbide cemented into a composite by a binder metal. Cemented carbides commonly use tungsten carbide(WC), titanium carbide (TiC), or tantalum carbide(TaC) as the aggregate. Mentions of "carbide" or "tungsten carbide" in industrial contexts usually refer to these cemented composites.
