Wow I needed this video!! I almost gave up skating. I spent over 300$ on a pair of skates at this specialized skate store. I asked the girls about adjusting them and they just said “they’re fine”. But they were so factory tight I almost broke my tools to loosen them after I saw this video! But because they told me they didn’t need adjusting, I had spent weeks falling and twisting my knees because my skates were so tight everywhere they barely moved. I even went somewhere to pay for TWO skate lessons at this rink and the instructor never even offered to look at my skates!? He just kept joking with me that I was “chicken” and not trying to cross over and turn. I kept saying I couldn’t my skate was stuck feeling and I wanted to cross over but something felt wrong. But no advice at all! So thankful for this video!! It changed everything!!! Why are people on the skate world so secretive of such important and simple advice?!!

@merfishsandwich6912 жыл бұрын
My experience in these situations is not that people are being secretive, but that they don't actually have the knowledge or understanding to help you. What people do instead of saying "I don't know" is they say "it's fine!" because they don't want to look stupid. I recently went to a skate store and bought new skates and the people were super nice and helpful, however they didn't actually have a foot measuring device in the store... I'm glad I measured before I got there. The point is don't assume because it's a specialized shop that they're going to have it fully together. It's very important to make yourself an expert in your own hobbies, and not just in technique but equipment and tools as well. This way you can support your local businesses and protect yourself at the same time.

Some advice, believe it or not you should learn how to fall be fore leaning to skate. Why? Because even professionals fall. But if you do not practice how to fall what causes people to fall on they butt is fighting not to fall. You need to bend your knees and lean forward and push off like she said in the video. But if you stand straight up, that's when you lose your balance and you seem so high off the floor you feel you will hurt yourself so you fight the fall. Thats when your arms start flaring and you try to regain balance and it actually speeds up faster then you can get the next foot down and that is how you fall up and come down with all your weight on your butt.

I wish I could LOVE this video! When buying skates, it's NOT just about the skates. You need pads if skating outdoors, at the VERY least knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet. Elbow pads are optional, but useful...and beginner skaters may benefit greatly from Bumsavers or something similar. DON'T forget some basic tools when you buy skates! The Y3, that wrench, if needed, allen wrench, if needed, etc. I'd also like to add: Spare parts! Especially laces. They always seem to fray/snap at the worst possible moment! LOL It's also good to have an couple extra bearings (you can buy 20 packs instead of just 16), toe stops (and a toe stop bolt if you have a fixed stop), a couple extra lock nuts, etc. My Rink Box has all of that and more. My Skate Bag (local park skating) has most of it. My Skate Corner also has it all....and then some! I can change/play with my skates anywhere at any time to get the best ride possible. Hubby just rolls his eyes at me, but the LAST thing I want when skating is to have to stop because "something broke". :) He can laugh all he wants. If I blow a bearing or a lace snaps....I'm ready!

Broken Knee - Best Case: 8-12 weeks to heal. Worst Case: Surgery with 6 months of healing. No skating. Broken Elbow - repeat of knee. Again, most doctors would advise against skating. BRUISED (yeah, bruised, NOT broken) - up to 6 MONTHS to fully heal. You won't even WANT to skate. Broken Tailbone - Can take a year and a half to fully heal...and often leaves some permanent damage. No skating. Head? Best Case: Nothing but a little goose egg for a week, with the area being tender for up to another 2 weeks. Makes it a literal pain to brush your hair. Worst case: Brain dead! @@sarahrl7230 I believe there are 2 causes for loosening nuts... Stress (aka vibration) and fatigue (aka stripped threads). Thread locking compound would help the former issue I believe. I know thread locker is used on laptop screws to prevent them from coming out. Careful though, because it might make it hard to remove later on. I don't think there is an easy solution for stripped threads. Remember blue locktite (can be tightened and loosened after application) is your friend. Not red... Great advice to get started! Don't be afraid to loosen the trucks more as you get accustomed to them though. You won't be uncontrollable. Hm so when I buy these tools is there also some type of oil or grease I should get too? Gaskets?
@MystiqueRisingSun4 жыл бұрын
I prefer sewing machine oil for my bearings. It's cheaper than the oils made specifically for skating/skate bearings. Cleaner for the bearings as well. Citrus based, NOT water-based, works best, but they can be difficult to find, so a water-based citrus cleaner and canned air works just as well. You just want to make sure there's no liquid in the bearing after cleaning it, before you oil it and put it back on. As for gaskets...not sure what you're talking about. Like, knee gaskets? I'd go for the pads as gaskets only "surround" the knee. Pads are what helps protect them.

The powerdyne tool is sold out pretty much everywhere. You’d have better luck getting a socket wrench in 1/2” and 9/16”
@MystiqueRisingSun4 жыл бұрын
@@butanetorch5386 Or just go with a skateboard tool. They have the same sizes on their tucks. The only difference is you'll need a separate wrench if you've got an adjustable toe stop as - of course - skate boards don't have stops.
@rickyhorsburgh65814 жыл бұрын
Just get a skate board skate tool any spanner will work on most toe stops u will need the thin spanner for the lock nut if u have them. Use acetone to clean bearings take dust covers off first and bones speed cream to lubricate them thats about all u need

OMG I appreciate you so much Dirty Deborah Harry! This video was perfect. I was struggling to determine why my wheels wouldn't spin faster and your video made it so easy to fix. Thank you!

So helpful! I skated the little, plastic, rock-hard red wheels off my k mart skates in my basement and driveway when I was growing up, and I loved going to the skating rink. So glad to pick it back up again with so much friendly help! My kids are cautiously excited for me. LOL. :D

I wish I had watched this video before I ordered my skates! Ugh, now the tools are all on back order and my skates get here tomorrow. 😭😩

You can use other tools to adjust your skates no problem. Take your skates to a local hardware store if you are unsure.

I adjusted my wheels right when I took them out of the box, but I didn't realize I needed to adjust the trucks too!!! I was having so much trouble turning/spinning. I honestly just thought I was bad at it, then I loosened my trucks and now I'm able to spin! Thank you!!

I wish I could give this a couple of more likes 👍. I was wondering why I was struggling to skate outside and couldn't propel myself backwards indoors. It was all because I needed to watch this video again, when I finally got some skates, and make the adjustments. Thank you so very much!

I knew it! Thank goidness gor your instructional videos! I have a new pair of Chaya Melrose Premiums. I was fixing my lacing (wide feet!) and realized i was still unsteady on the skates/things felt oddly stiff. Went through your videos and realized I should unlock my trucks. Woohoo!

As a beginner I was unsure about trucks and adjusting them. Watched a few vids to try and figure it out but this was the most informative video and has some personality. Love it! My skates from the shop were so stiff and I couldn't believe how people could skate like that haha but a little dirty deb and they feel soooo much better !

I'm returning to my teenage passion at 56. I put my 40 year old skates on for the first time in 11 years & discovered my left foot kept tracking out. I adjusted the "action bolt" tighter to prevent it & it did not work. Upon returning home from my skate (with a nasty bruise on my knee from catching debris & going down), I disassembled my skates to investigate the rubbers. Low & behold, both front & rear pivot cups were split! I have a "donor" pair of skates I harvested cups from & NO MORE TRACKING OUT!!! Moral of the story: It may not just be a simple adjustment of the trucks. Sometimes, it's damage/wear & tear on the gear. Especially, when what you're skating on is 40+ years old!

thaaaank you thank you thank youuu! Seriously! I just got my 2nd pair of skates and they were waaaay more wobbly than the first, and you're the only person I've seen talk about adjusting the trucks out of the box! And now I know why my first pair were soooo hard to turn in! Thank you so much!! Love your videos. You make it so much fun!

So glad I finished the video. My skates needed the second variation of tightening/loosening and I only followed the first. I thought I had messed up my new skates for sure. Thanks a lot!!

Omgggg. Well this explains aLOT!!! I just got my first pair of skates in 20 years at the weekend and I was about to give up because I thought I was just too old (43 in 3 weeks) and had forgotten everything. NO!!! My trucks are as stiff as a board (I'm pretty strong and they don't BUDGE!) And my wheels MAYBE do 2 revolutions each free flowing before the stop. Luckily it's early in the morning here in 🏴 so I can order the things I need and get them today. Until then I have taken my boots BACK off so I don't get any more frustrated. I have watched SO many of your videos already, I am obsessed with your energy and your accent,teaching style and just everything about you.. I so so wish that roller rinks were a bigger 'thing'over here in 🇬🇧 , ESP as our streets are so cheaply laid, there are hardly any smooth surfaces at all 🥺. Thank you SO much for your videos. ❤❤❤ . Love all the way from London. XxX

THIS WORKED. Today I untightened my trucks and wheels and now I feel like I can skate! I also went for my first lesson and out of all the 8 and 9 year olds, I was the best. my 10 year age difference has nothing to do with that for sure… This made all the difference!!! Thank you so much!!!

Hey Dirty, just saw your video. Awesome. I am in my 50's and just recently I decided to go back to roller skating. In my teens I played roller hockey for many years and I was in excellent shape. Now, not to much. I just got some Riedell speed skates and wiped out horribly. Not the hockey boots I was used to. I looked up your video and thank you so much. I immediately took out my skates and tool and began adjusting. I will be looking at more of your videos. Dinosaur me asked the shop owner "Where do you keep your zinger wheels" They started laughing. "They don't make Zinger's anymore". Geeez, felt old. The Ruskin Rambler is making a come back. PS: Love the Roller Derby. You Look Great by the way.

Such a huge help. I kept telling the instructors that everything was too stiff (i just purchased my skates) and they said, “you just have to break them in.” 🤦🏾♀️. Over time I was falling more. My body was loose but my skates weren’t. Thanks so much!!❤

Such a helpful video! I found a pair of vintage roller skates and decided to spruce them up and adjust them to my liking. The only thing is the trucks on my vintage skates were very different from my usual skates I already own. Every video I search up is only to adjust a certain type of truck… until I came across this video! Thank you. I’m no longer wobbling all over the place in my vintage pair 😂
