Honestly the importance of "practicing falling" before ever putting your skates on is so important, and people really need to give their reflexes more credit than they already do. Before I ever put my skates on I practiced falling in my living room with my gear on, but in the back of my mind I was still afraid my body wouldn't naturally do what I was practicing. Until, I fell. On ice. Walking to my car. I was actually quite surprised at how my body's natural reaction was to tuck my chin, and pick a butt cheek to fall on. I hadn't even realized I was falling until I was on the ground. I'm still a new skater, but now knowing my body does naturally have that reflex makes me feel so much more confident.

Today, is May 2, 2024. I just watched this video. When you started to stress the importance of not giving up on your dream to skate despite your weight and what others think of you. I got emotional with you. Yes, it's true that people think roller skating is for kids. I've had it said to me since I broke my wrist March 23, 2024, followed by a surgery to add a plate to my radius. I still want to skate again. I don't want my injury to win. I want to be a good skater that can get around the rink, and hopefully not fall. Thank you for all of the videos. I've saved about ten or more from your KZbin videos.

Your happy feed tip is pretty good. I've been doing that on inline skates on every kind of terrain for 20 years and it's a good start. The next step is lifting the landing gear the moment it gets hooked on something, before the plane goes down, where you are the plane. That's for massive obstacles and it takes practices to feel the skates binding and automatically lift knees while throwing your weight backwards to compensate for the tendency to stumble forward. These are great videos.

I took a hard fall on the tail when I was going over a bridge. My fault. I did some kind of little panic move when I got to the expansion joint of a bridge. It actually didn't hurt me but it scared the crap out of this older couple that saw me fall. The man came running to help me as I popped up. The worst injury so far has been to my left shoulder. I guess I bruised or injured a tendon. It's been about a month and I'll get almost 100% then jerk my arm or some guy at the rink runs into me and it sets back the healing. I wear pads and helmet outside but not at the rink. I'm going to start wearing wrist guards at the rink, too. I'm 64 and have only been skating for 8 months after nearly 50 years. Every time I've fallen it's because I was not moving, going to slowly or simply hesitated when I should have sped up. I learn something every time I roll.

I just wanted to comment and say that I was one of those annoying "why not wear a helmet?!!" people. I've watched so many videos since, and more importantly I've ACTUALLY BEEN SKATING!!!! Thank you for teaching to use protective gear BUT NOT DEPEND ON IT!!!! As a beginner, the windmill will happen and it is better to know how to fall than depend on the integrity of gear to save you. You are SUCH a good teacher!!!

I’m glad I watched videos on how to prevent injuries before I began learning to skate! I fell on my first day, but I only bruised my leg because I didn’t panic and knew what to do! and now I’m not afraid of falling! skating is too much fun to be held back by fear!!

I’ve been skating for a little over a month and it’s amazing how much I’ve improved thanks to your tutorials!

Great descriptive video! Better to be forewarned than find out what you should have done AFTER you have hit the ground!

Thank you! Thank you! I fell on my butt and my tailbone injury has had me giving my skates the stink eye, this encouraged me to get back to it after a week of rest!

omg, the tailbone. i once slipped coming down stairs (outside) and i landed right on the corner of the step on my tailbone. you're right, i was walking around very gingerly for 3+ weeks, making small moaning sounds every 5 seconds. it was the most painful experience ever and for that reason, my body instinctively seems to avoid landing near there when i fall when i'm skating. thanks for discussing this!

I'm 40 years old and broke my wrist just 4 months after I start learning. Back then felt so stupid using protection and now I feel stupid for not wear it. From now on knee and wrist protection is a must for me.

Girl I busted my ass 2 days ago and it's the worst! At 49 skating again and love it. Hopefully tailbone heals soon!!! Love ya! ❤️

Yees those padded "diaper" shorts saved me! I fell straight on my tailbone on my first time skating and felt nothing! I tie a shirt on my waist to cover it. Ι only struggled a little with my neck as that fall was like a shock and i had a whiplash effect. I will have in mind to keep the chin down then also.

this video is perfect timing! i’ve been practicing outdoors trying to get the hang of skating, however i don’t currently have protection as i can’t afford it for now. hoping to buy some in the next couple of weeks, so this is really helpful! i’ve loved learning from you 😊

D., Thanks for all your great teaching, and especially for your honesty! Some skaters just tell you to 'learn to fall' or get low and roll. All that kind of advice makes me feel worse; like, great, I can't even fall right? Jeez.

Thank you, great tips! My first time out thank Gawd I invested in the pads; first fall was face forward tripped on crack in concrete with a stone jammed in there and landed and skidded on the metal wrist guard barely saving my top lip and teeth *no mouthguard in* from the concrete😑 It happed SO FAST. Later a friend completely unpadded with no helmet landed on the back of her head and it happened even faster. Now I have a full on hockey helmet with the face guard because, my face! ...fear and safety. I just learned about knee gaskets under the knee pads so that's on the list too.

As a new skater, practicing at the park in all the pads, I tried to walk a quick shortcut down a small grassy hill in my skates. What's the worst that could happen, right? I'm in all the pads. The EMTs called it a Classic Tib-Fib. Fentanyl would not dull the pain. Over the next week in the PACU (hospital was full) the Orthopedic team did an intermedullary nailing (rod down the tib, screwed in place), and gave me a cool scar from ankle to knee bc of compartment syndrome. It being Trauma Season, I was actually one of the luckiest people in there--wardmates were shot up and torn up much worse. The new residents were shiny handsome and vivacious, and it was a pleasure to be in the care of the Hive (of nurses and nurses aides). That break flushed 3 seasons-worth of outdoor activities down the jon, but I finally caught up on a whole bunch of touchstone over-long TV shows that one needs some working knowledge of in order to talk to the average american. Moral of the story is, don't wear the skates anywhere but a skating surface. Even the parking lot is too much, imo. People say "oh, did you do that skating?" I say "No--I did it trying to hike in roller skates".

Also, having watched a ton of Dirty Debbie's tutorials while in recovery, I was super excited to get back onto the skates about a year later, and made very rapid progress!

I used to think I was too cool for helmet when snowboarding but after a few bad falls, I decided I should wear a helmet and I'm glad I did. I've had a few falls with the helmet that hurt so I can only imagine how bad it would have been without a helmet

1st time roller skating was 2 days ago (I used to use roller blades 20yrs ago and remember not being afraid of falling). Now I’m so afraid of falling that I didn’t even try to make the actual fall less hard and fell TWICE on my butt. I had no idea about those padded shorts! And here my boyfriend and mother making fun of me of how I should wear a pillow around my butt lol Thank you so much for this video! Now I don’t feel as dumb as I did yesterday when I tried to skate again and I felt anxiety crawling over my mind and chest. Now that I’ve read many of the comments as well, it’s good to know it’s more common than I thought.

Do you have a video on how to wear skates/put them on? What the difference it may make if you lace them high or low, or tight or loose? I've searched your videos and couldn't find one. I've been binging on your videos by the way and love how you break things down step by step.

I went skating with my kid’s and it was awesome! The only thing is I haven’t been skating in over 20 yrs and I was having so much fun before I knew it 2 hour’s had passed by and I lost my balance and my feet slipped out from under me and I fell backwards ,but after that I wasn’t scared of falling 😂 ! Guess I should of took a break!

I wish you were around with these videos when I started. I've skated for 23 years. Have fractured my left wrist twice and right wrist once protecting my head and butt. I've worn my wrist guards 100% of the time for the last 10 years. Thanks for the reminders!

I had a "MILD" concussion in a bad car wreck, and completely lost control of my emotions because of it for MONTHS (common effect of any TBI). I almost lost my job and relationship because of it. Now I wear a helmet while skating even though I didn't before. Also have knee scars from not wearing knee pads. So yeah, I wear that stuff now

I broke my wrist and ankle in 2018, it was such a traumatizing experience, I wish I had this info then because I honestly didn't know why I fell until I watched your videos I finally got my revelation on body posture, I have permanent hardware in both and it turned my life upside down but I'm determined not be defeated and I will get back on those skates.

I fell 2 days ago after tripping over a gutter dip I thought I could go through. I had gear on and fell on my wrist guards and my left shoulder hurt a bit after that. Then the next morning both my arms and my shoulder blades were so sore it hurt to move. I’m still in pain but I don’t regret going skating I’m still learning and can’t wait to go again!
