disabled child social security (DAC)
Did you know your child could receive 50 - 75% of your social security benefit? It's true. Social Security's Disabled Adult Child (DAC) Benefit allows children to receive benefits based on their parent's work history.
The child must be disabled before the age of 22. I think the easiest way to establish this is by applying for SSI at age 18. When the child is approved they become eligible for DAC. Parents should not have to do anything else unless Social Security asks for redetermination.
When one of the parents becomes disabled, retires, or dies the program may automatically kick in. The child may start receiving SSDI. Every dollar received in SSDI will reduce SSI by an equal dollar. The benefit will be based on the parent with the higher amount if both parents are retired or dead.
This is important to consider when thinking about taking your social security. Taking it early could reduce the benefit for both you and your child.
After receiving SSDI for 24 months your child will get Medicare. They can keep Medicaid. They have to meet Medicaid's asset limit. This is CRITICAL if the child is receiving Waiver services.
You CAN work and receive the DAC. Unlike SSI, SSDI is all or nothing. If you qualify, you get the full amount. If you make more than $1,350/mth (2022) you could lose your SSDI. Talk to a Benefits Counselor to learn more.
