If you borrow money, you pay it back. It's a matter of honor. The defendant kept mentioning that he was a chaplain, trying to sway the judge that he was honest. The 'woman on the street' questioned by Harvey stated that when you lend money, you write it off as a loss. That's the very person that you would never lend money to.
