@mercenarychef94653 жыл бұрын
I've never really cosplayed a kid-friendly character, so I don't have anything that completely fits the bill, but there was one incident during my first con, when I had been adopted by a Bleach crew at the convention. We, as a group of about 20 shinigami, decided to trek over to the Mall of America to do a little window shopping, and maybe take some candid photos, you know, the things broke teenagers and slightly less broke 20-year-olds do. One of our stops was to a Gamestop on the third floor. About five of us were sitting outside the shop, looking over the balcony, when we noticed a small child of about 5 or 6 on the second floor opposite us. We all waved, and this kid's expression was simply awestruck. Not even a minute later, his mom notices us and yanks him away from the balcony, nearly yelling that he needed to stay away from us and that we'd steal his soul. 15 years later, I still laugh about the absurdity of that interaction, and hope that kid's doing alright.

Huh, is that something you encounter often? People being weird about cosplay, I mean? Coming from the south I've definitely encountered it myself, but I've always figured the northern states would be less judgy about nerd stuff
@mercenarychef94653 жыл бұрын
@@wesleypatterson2989 keep in mind that this was back in '06, when the idea of groups of people walking around in costume was relatively unheard of. Also, a bunch of people in flowy black robes smiling at her child would scare any mildly religious person. Not saying she was religious, just that there's an option. Also, the idea that the north is "less judgy" is not entirely accurate. Most of the time it's just not as overt, more passive aggressive than anything else.

Now one wonders if the mom was saying that because she watches the show too or because of other reasons. Was a Grim Reaper standing behind the group of young adults cosplaying as anime Grim Reapers?

And then she goes "You're the badguy!" And I said "Oh no, you're thinking of Volpina! Don't worry! I work with Ladybug! I'm a good guy!" And this little girl kept DEMANDING I was Volpina and she was gonna tattle on me to Ladybug 😅. It went on everytime she saw me on the con floor and everytime I had to tell her I was a hero! It was honestly really funny everytime. Not sure if it would have been BETTER to be dressed as Volpina or not LOL

Wowww... Interacting with children (while you're cosplaying) is really tricky. I guess that's a good reason to learn some acting skills and maybe watch previously some episodes of the cartoon you're cosplaying from (in order to know some quotes, how to be in character and how to think again as a kid). The moral of the story : don't let your inner child die. Nice story, Anya. 👍

This reminds me of a time I was dressed as hero Rey at an event at my local fandom store for either May the 4th or Halloween. I was chatting with the store owner when a little boy came in & excitedly yelled "it's Rey!!". I am not a kid person, & was caught really off guard by the enthusiasm of this little guy, I don't think I even said anything to him, just smiled & laughed. Luckily the little boy was not phased since he was surrounded by Star Wars cosplayers & merch, but to this day I feel like I should have reacted in character or said something about SW or SOMETHING lol!

We had practiced and Granddaughter did her polite intro of herself and asked for a hug and picture. The Princess was "right on" and after all this she gave Granddaughter her Tiara and told her she was a Princess too!!!!!!! (Turns out Princess was on her way out.) Well, Granddaughter is our Princess, but then she really believed and told everyone (including the cousins she stayed with while I was at the RAVE) that she was a real Princess!!! Then I said to the one girl who was Sailor Moon "Oh! It's Sailor Moon! I love your cosplay!" and she lit up. I then saw her friend and said "Oh hey it's Hatsune Miku! She's my favorite Vocaloid" and then she lit up. Then there was the brother of Sailor Moon. Didn't dissapoint a kid moreso a professional character at Disneyland. It was Star Wars Nite at Disneyland where they empty out the park for this exclusive night event. I loved cosplaying and did it every chance i got, but i wasn't too knowledgeable about star wars. I jad barely seen all the movies for the first time and couldn't tell a stormtrooper apart from a clone trooper... i was dressed as Han Solo (cuz he seemed cool) and they had a Boba Fett taking pictures with guests. My partner insisted i go interact with him as it would be "perfect for everyone to see". As soon as i walk up to him (attempting my best to look cool and collected) and he says "I'm surprised to see you in one piece Solo, however i can make arrangements to fix that." I panicked and just gave a really awkward chuckle, posed and awkwardly walked away. To this day i replay the interaction with different things i could've said like "How's that Jet Pack workin ol pal?" ;-;

One time there was an outdoor movie night thing happening near-ish to where I live, and the movie was Labyrinth. The one with the goblins, not the fantasy-horror one with the Pale Man. I decided to go in my Jareth cosplay since I freaking _adore_ being in that costume. There was a couple with a maybe 2-year-old kid who was dressed as the baby Jareth kidnaps, and they wanted a picture so I did that. Either this kid has no self-preservation instinct or I am inherently not threatening, because he stuck to me for almost the entire movie. It was highly amusing. Tiring, but highly amusing!
