His own fault, multiple things happened that shouldn't. Removing a shield is an action. Using an oversized weapon imposes disadvantage so probably wouldn't have crit. At best he should have been able to taken an unarmed strike aoo to run away with the weapon and play keep away.

​@@michaelcordero7061 I think his problem is with the action economy. Technically he couldn't sheath his weapon(s), drop the shield, pick up the sword, AND attack with the action surge. Remedied by dropping the weapon(s) instead of sheathing.

Technically you don't roll with disadvantage with the weapon if you have some other way to maintain Advantage.

​@kobochy8108 Ah, but the size DOES matter. Small races, such as Gnomes and Halflings, have to roll with disadvantage when using weapons with the heavy property, like greatswords. This is irregardless of their proficiency in the weapon, which only matters when determining if you make your attack rolls with your proficiency bonus or not. A strong enough medium-size wizard can still swing around a greatsword if they wanted without rolling two dice, their to hit bonus would just be low compared to a proficient character.

You have to be a certain strength level to pick up a giant sword. You might be able to disarm them and get them to drop their sword but you picking it up is a different story altogether. If you crit, I would rule that you were able to with all of your strength get it to slide along the ground and chop into the Giants Achilles tendon that's amazing and that's all you can do even with a crit.

If the weapon is one size larger (house rule: than your carrying capacity), roll the attack at disadvantage. If it’s two or more, you can’t wield it. That’s why I play a Rune Knight Fairy.

Pluto is my favorite pc of any online campaign. And to the rules lawyers in here, you can not convince me that strength is not severely underpowered in d&d. Actual human feats that are better than fantasy characters are absurd.

You can never tell if they have thoer own rules from shorts like this, but if they don't and they run things rules as written, then taking of your shield is an action, so no attack with action surge.

This clip actually cuts out a brief discussion on Monty choosing to be lenient in this instance for the sake of how much fun it all was. He does address the rules and asks Joe to roll a d6 and on a 4-6 he will let him bend the rules in favour of being awesome. We like letting fate decide sometimes if the rule of cool prevails.

And everyone seems to forget that doffing a shield requires an Action in and of itself. If the character used their Interact with Object to pick up the Giant's sword, then they could not sheathe this weapons, though he could drop them. The Player then decided to attack and rolls before the DM can advise him whether or not he would be able to attack with Disadvantage because of the weapon size. I smell some definite House rules... because otherwise he could not have done this.

I feel like that is the internal debate going on in Monty for now. However the real problem is if that fighter decides to keep that oversized weapon and fight with it in every battle. That is when you need to figure out the rules for it. As for the heat of the moment, having that epic scene you can definitely make it work.

yea, thats a lame rule i let my players drop their shields for free if they're placing it into some kind of storage system, sure - but dropping a shield takes no effort at all especially if your shield isnt one of those ones with a ton of straps/clasps/buttons/buckles, etc

Unless he just dropped them wouldn’t it take an action just to get the sword and possibly another to put away the ones he already had? Even if that doesn’t eat up all of his actions to do what kind of weight can he handle? Would there be a risk of him becoming over encumbered? If not then I just have the original question, but if it does then what would that do to his action economy and chance to hit?
