Disassembled Counterfeit/Fake SM57 vs a REAL Shure SM57

Great video. I just got a fake one. Most of the info on the web is a bit old and the fakers have obviously got better so the tell tale signs a few years ago are not valid any more. I might add a video responce with some of the 'features' on mine to help the cause. Thanks

I'm intrigued by this "wad of plastic" thing. So, they actually went to the trouble of molding something that resembles a transformer and then wrapping it in plastic wrap? Thanks!

try to report the guy for selling fake stuff on ebay. i've had them reopen cases before for stuff like this. also explain that if it wasn't a fake the wire would not have broken and you would not have to ship it back.

I may be wrong - you may have had a different version - the entire bottom assembly is higher quality in mine - it's the top part that's clearly fake.

I bought a SM57 on Ebay and got it tonight and I thought it was weird when I spun the top and felt a wire break. I contacted the ebay seller and waiting a response. Maybe I'll get my 58 bucks back.

Mine did not have the plastic on the bottom though, it was glued down to the point you could never get it out.

Purchased my first used sm57. Thought it was fake because I never had a mic like this before, and I was like wtf, why the capsule is spinning around like this easily. Turns out this is normal lol

I have a real SM57 and it doesn't have that plastic/rubber ring at the bottom.

weird... my legit sm57 on the bottom where the plug is looks like your fake one... no ring in there.. bought it brand new in box from Guitar Center so I doubt its fake. Perhaps they switched over to cheaper production since this video.

@@adamlongworthproductions everything else is on par with yours... I guess next time I am in there I will have a look at the display model a little closer. Certainly seems to sound okay.. my first dyamic mic though so hard to say.

I bet Shure makes these counterfeits too, then distributes them out into the marketplace so that people despair of buying used SM57's and all want to go buy brand new ones that are marked up way too high. Unless some shady business out there has the skill and resources necessary to make such perfect-looking and somewhat functional replicas, yet doesn't bother to spend the extra 5 cents per unit to produce the parts that would make it fully functional... I doubt that.

eBay wanted me to pay to return it and since a wire broke I could not return it in working condition and lost. A buddy of mine Jason Burns of Gear Addicts told me about Orange Clounty Speakers GLS ES57 microphones. They are like 3 for 79 on amazon USA made and a slightly improved 57 microphone. They sound great and cheap. I won't buy a shure now.

People often mod SM57 to loose a transformer so this part might not be that bad

Does the transformer help a lot with signal:noise ratio? Is it usual to dynamic mics to have transformers?

Signal to noise ratio refers to analog circuits. A dynamic microphone is a passive device and does not have such a ratio.

hey, by any chance do you know how to fix one? i have that bundle where it came with 3 sm 57 and a beta 58, but one of my sm 57 top thingy fell apart and now is just the diaphram without the top that spins, can you please help?

1) look at one of your working SM57s 2)look at your broken SM57 3)make the broken one look like the working one

i think i bought the fake one on the internet...and i broke the wire because of the spinning of the capsule while i was trying to test if it was original. Does anyone know how to repair it? I have no idea how to connect the wires!

Paypal has told me the seller is offering a full refund once I return the item but said item should be in same condition as I got it in and it is broken because the wires broke when they top spun. I am sending it off and if the buyer refuses to refund me I will fill a dispute with my bank on paypal.

Good video (I didn't know mine was a fake until I watched your video), but I think you may have mixed up the mics when you were talking about the plastic bits on the bottom. The real ones shouldn't have the plastic inner-round bit at all.
