Shure SM57 Mic REPAIR & How to Spot a FAKE

In this video we will look at how to replace a trashed diaphragm and voice coil on a Shure SM57 microphone. Shure makes a replacement part called the R57. They also offer a "repair" service where most people indicate means they send you an all new SM57 to replace a broken one. Also you can buy a couple different Chinese replacement parts for it, but we'll go with the cheap one which costs about $5 or $6. We'll also talk about how to spot a fake SM57 and not get ripped off.

There are two styles of Chinese replacement capsules you can buy. One is like the one I showed here, the other has a larger magnet like the original American part and costs around $25. Not sure if the head spins. If i come across another broken 57, I’ll install the better quality knockoff and compare all 3 in some various applications.

Those voice coil wires are insulated. To solder them without burning them up, there are some tricks to do it. First sandpaper the ends to remove the insulation. Second put a ball of flux on the connection point where you are going to solder the wires. Third put some paste flux on the the solder ball. Forth, heat solder ball and place coil wire in molten pool and lift heat. This step should take 1-2 seconds at most. It has to be quick. I have had really good luck doing this following these steps.

I've also used solder paste and a heat gun instead of a soldering iron. lay teflon tape down, a dab of solder paste, place the wires with flux removed, then lightly heat. The result is similar to soldering without as much heat.

I was a roadie/ guitar tech for a band that played there a lot. The sound guys there were the best. The saloon stage was on the first floor,the tiki bar was on the second floor and the big stage was on the third floor. Really hated when the band played the top stage because you had to drag all the gear up narrow stair cases. It was a really cool place and always had great crowds.

I have a handful of the PYLE 57 copies and while I don't think they will handle load in and load out every night they sound just fine for at home stuff. I compared two of them with two 609's and the way I see it is if you can hear a difference between the two then you should be working for NASA or some outfit like that.

Been a big fan of the 57 since the early 70's, I got a bag of them laying around here somewhere. I use them for everything, vocals, amp mic and even got one in my isocab. If I was a decade or so younger I would do microsurgery on that separated diaphram and bring it back to life. At my age however fine work like that is only a fading memory.

It would be a job on this one. No lead at all poking out on one side. Would require excavation of the bottom layer of diaphragm. Easier said than done. Then you’d have to clean and tack new wire on that existing wire, IF you can find the end.

There is a better Chinese capsule you can buy on ebay and Alibaba. Its similar to the original one. It’s around $20-$25.

The cheap capsules usually sound ok, its the transformerless knockoffs that sound super bad. You can tell quickly by the lack of weight, and the label. The screw holes are also different between fakes. I still think it's worth getting the Shure stuff.

I know this video is a week old now, but you can use Windex to lubricate the rubber sleeve when you are trying to push that in the collar. Windex does not chemically interact with the rubber, will not pit the metal, and evaporates quickly (I had to hook up rubber hose connectors a LOT at my last job) Yeah the repaired mic might sound a bit different, but sometimes you want a slightly different sound. It could be perfect for the right situation. That's why I own so many mics 😁😁

Some people take out the transformer and wire the capsule directly to pin2/3 on the xlr. It's supposed to give better bass response but a little less gain. I haven't tried it myself, but I may if I get my hands on a well worn mike.

I have that t-bone thingy from Thomann. Back in the day I had an original. It didn't help me to create nice rhythm tracks. I was too dumb to find the sweet spot. I use IRs mostly, for convenience. The T-bone is pretty good for the price. I am s(h)ure placing it at the sweet spot of your speaker, it will rip!!!

I just bought some of those live wire cables for pedal connections and they sound great. Very interesting how they can be wired wrong from the factory, but great once working correctly. Luckily, my cables are all fine. 3, 6 inch cables, for $22. 24 gauge wire, nickel ends. *I love how the new Shure voice coil sounds as good, but is different, too.

Use hairspray to temporarily lube then adhere the rubber part into the metal sleeve.

Is it possible to connect the coil wires back to the diaphragm somehow if the wires are visible?

The way I solder tiny wires together is first I lightly drag them over something like 400 or 600 grit sandpaper pressing down extremely lightly with my finger, then I put the two wires together like they are one and coil them up together by wrapping them around a piece of solder a couple times, then I momentarily touch them with a tinted soldering iron and check the resistance. I've never repaired a coil on a microphone but however I have successfully repaired many pickups and voice coils using this method.

That's because the China one is thin sounding and can't handle the SPL's a real one can. Put that China crap in front of a Marshall cab and see what happens! It'll crap out big time whereas that's the real one's bread and butter- gtr cabs and snare drums.

You might have been able to remove the voice coil from the Chinese copy and install it in the original capsule. I know the wires are very thin but I make guitar pickups and it's basically the same gauge wire, 42 or 43 Gage.

Great video Brad!! I love my SM57 for being just a workhorse all around mic. Good vocal quality and excellent rejection. In comparison my Rode NT1-A condenser mic really needs to be used in an actual studio. For my purpose in a "bedroom/studio" it picks up way to well, even with compression. Live and learn. I could have bought three SM57s for the price of the NT1-A. To be clear I am not knocking the Rode I just didn't understand the difference when I was first setting up my bedroom/studio.

Try lining a closet with blankets or foam and use the Rode condenser in there. Track in isolation as much as possible when doing vocals with a condenser.

I have a 1951 National/Valco amp with the 10” electro magnet speaker marked 550 on the back.. The voice coil started rubbing and I wanted to know if you know of a facility that could either replace just the voice coil, or re-cone the speaker? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Possibly a dumb question, but I know nothing of these things, but is it possible to use a thicker, more easily soldered, set of wires to connect the voice coil if you had no replacement Chinese guts to use as you had?

If there had been wire left on the coil on both sides... probably not. The wire has to fit under the edge of the diaphragm, so it needs to be thin wire that's lacquered so it doesn't short out on the magnet body. Not an easy task. The best bet would be to get a new diaphragm with long wire leads so you could adhere it on and run all new wire down to the terminals like they do in the factory and tape them.

A quick listen, even on laptop speakers is the the Chinese version is lacking low end. Btw. How I remember my XLR plugs, the female is the right way around from the back/soldering side. And I mean that 1,2,3 is clockwise if you look at it from the back. The male goes 1,2,3 but counter clockwise. So to sum up and have a laugh in the mean time: the female has it right if you look at her from the back :) And... pin 3 is always your cold so that is even more easy.

don't know if it's been said yet, there are a couple aftermarket transformers for the sm57. tab funken was making one, but the owner oliver died a couple years ago and i don't know if they're still available. i think one of the lundahl's can fit in that tiny body. but, ripping out the transformer altogether can sometimes be a major improvement for that mic, and it's mostly urban legend that phantom power would damage the mic without the transformer, but there are very few that really could. worth it in my opinion, the stock transformers sound like garbage. it's always the core metalurgy. lundahls are where it's at for new production!

Could the output difference be in the difference of the transformer between the two mics? Maybe the transformer in the old mic is “better” than in a new SM57. I know the difference in tone is the capsule, but maybe the transformer has something to do with output? I’m clueless when it comes to how a mic works. Honestly, the tone of the replacement capsule sounded much better than I thought it would.

Transformers are the same in both. I didn’t change the transformer with the new capsule swap.

They tore down a great live venue in my city. National acts came through, it was part of the House of Blues. I have see acts ranging from Anthrax, Malmsteen, Government Mule... my band even headlined there twice. Tore it down after 25+ years. The concerts that place held was just incredible. Too bad the replacement parts are so expensive. Shure should make them more practically priced.

@@TheGuitologist forgot to mention that venue was really generous with their bookings and community involvement. During the week you could see "high school" battle of the bands, 14-18 year old kids playing, selling tickets to get their friends to see them...they would host great just general weekend bashes, when big acts weren't booked, with a good DJ, and for Halloween costume competitions, Thanksgiving Eve, St. Patrick's Day. You could always see an A-List cover band, on the weekends. Even had small indy shows that showcased local, regional, or nearby talent. Seeing the pictures you posted in this video really hit home. They literally tore it down, brick by brick, and completely erased it from history. Just like the pictures you showed here. Now the kids, adults, and any aspiring musicians don't have a venue anymore. It's an 8 story apartment building now.

Worth it though if you can save the tank. Invest in a lupe or magnifying glass.

Use rubbing alcohol as a lubricant for assembling rubber parts. It works like magic & evaporates away. This works for rubber on rubber and other stuff. Basically rubbing alcohol works with anything squishy. Also, yeah you can totally solder and work with those wires. I've done it plenty of times. Yes with mics, speaker voice coils & guitar pickups. To repair that shure > U either just tack on a new wire or unwrap one wind from the coil. Being able to see is the most important part. Use a Loupe :) ESPECIALLY for removing the enamel. Removing the enamel is the difficult part and being able to see/verify that you have indeed succeeded is the name of the game. Magnification is not an option. yes you can see the enamel being removed with a loupe. Nowadays, having an assortment of magnifying equipment is essential ! jewelers loupes / usb microscopes / etc ...

We all know its not about Guitar Center saving 5 minutes. The shipping cost to get the cord fixed or replaced is twice as much as the chord is worth. And besides. Pro Line is going to toss it as soon as then get it anyway. Then send a brand new one. Warranty repair technicians are costly too.

You'd definitely notice the difference when miking a Marshall cab or snare drums, the 57's bread and butter in pro applications, as the china ones will crap out at high SPL's. That's the difference!

I suppose the voice coil and magnet part of the mic is almost 100% of the technology that makes shure. Makes sense they can't sell it cheap for replacement, you'd just put it in a cheap shell and get significantly cheaper but equal quality stuff. It's unfortunate for trying to be ecological with it. The tone is not night and day but even on a phone speaker it's clearly distinguishable. Louder but less "character" and doesn't feel as dynamic.

too bad about the tavern from the pics that place looked pretty hoppin.. they did that to a spot in seattle that was protected by the hysterical society but somehow they got it off of that listing and tore it down, so many good bands played there, Heart of course, all your seattle grunge bands, last band that I know was there was either bad company or quiet riot, forget, cuzin booked the bands I hung out and hobnobbed quite a bit, went on cocaine and heroin runs you name it, picked up vocalists at hotels late to their gig with LA Guns, oops.. Randy Hansen, so many... Jimi's Brother Leon.. my cuz jammed with him all the time, taught him guitar when he could, lined hairon wit em, oh boy.. I wasn't even in the state at the time but everyones pizzed about it, sure wish I was with warning to go salvage all that good wood.. it was engineered as an acoustic amplification dance room, "Parker's Ballroom".. acoustical ceiling so amazing, sound was PHENOMENAL.. pizzed I wasnt around, wanted some that hardwood, all went to the landfill.. sad really its sister ballroom was tore down to the south it sat on the same hiway 99, 30 miles south or so? the one where Hendrix caught his first break by a KJR disk jockey, "the Spanish Castle Ballroom" was a phenomenal venue as well, "Spanish Castle Magic" jimi's first blotter? PHC tavern reminds me of these two spots in a big way, size, scope, patrons.. sad that we cannot have any sense of history and past remain, restore and preserve.., money is all anyone cares about today and it's sickening, one day we are going to be frowned upon so being so gluttonous and greedy, destroying all the good we did along the way in spite of.. parkers was on the hysterical list.. IF anything they could have had the balls to mcoe everything, the bar, the dance floor, the stage, green rooms all of it.. especially the ceiling, it was a dome acoustical ceiling, either put everything in storage until it can be used accordingly or build something now more suitable.. sad, like the phoenix hill club, just closed the next day gone for good, torn down.. all the memories and good times.. so much good hardwood in that place.. the dance floor was figured hard rock maple, edge up... amazing, the bar? unreal..

What are they now? $80, $90 bucks? A repair that simple is worth the time and effort, but anything more intense and I would just throw it out and buy a new one. Some things are just not worth the time and effort.

So you were in possession of a working Sm57 with provenance from a famed venue. Its foam had inevitably disintegrated. These capsules are renowned for being difficult to dismantle, but you went for it anyhow, which left you no option other than replace with a Chinese made capsule!!! All the guessing, presuming, hoping, is fine, it's good entertainment. But let's get one thing straight, this was an original Sm57 in working order, other than the disintegrating foam that could have been remedied with a blast of compressed air and a new exterior foam shield. Instead, you destroyed all its originality and placed it with a Chinese capsule. I hope it is never resold as a original sm57 cos it's worse than a new Chinese sm57. Yes I am hugging you with one arm and smacking with the other, I don't know what else you could expect. Keep up the content, I love it. You Rock.

@@TheGuitologist I researched how to remove the capsule and saw so many people unable to reassemble it that I just held mine upside down and shook it over some paper and blew throgh it gently with a camera dust puffer. I did this for a few minutes a day over approx a week, until it stopped dropping bits of disintegrated foam. Then I bought the correct sm57 foam exterior shield from shure for $22. The mic is still all original U.S.A.
